  1. Spinning rods are lighter than their trigger counterparts, a MH spinning is pretty much like a M trigger, so if you want backbone look for a higher power rated rod ( H ) You say you want plenty of backbone, good quality but under $100. Compre and Clarus rods have what you are looking for, now the catch is what you prefer, Extra Fast/Fast action or Fast action only ? Compres are either ExF or F ( around $80 ) Clarus are Fast ( around $60-70 ) I 've fished with both and from the two for that purpose you want it for ( weightless soft plastics ) I 'd take the Compre. BPS and Cabelas should have what you are looking for.
  2. It 's a great bait where you know fish are at a certain depth where other baits either don 't reach or don 't stay long enough at the depth you want. Cast, count by seconds to the desired bed and jerk - pause - let it sink - jerk- pause reeling in the slack line to maintain the bait at that depth ( it 's like worm fishing but without touching the bottom ). Like Chris mentioned, the bait flutters like a dying minnow when it sinks. It 's not a bait I fish with a lot but a couple of them in your T-box is not a big investment and sometimes saves your day having them.
  3. Bass have bigger mouths than brains and will attack lures that you could consider unlikely to be attacked, a swimbait will be attacked regardless of it sized, getting the fish hooked is another story. Matt 's bluegill is not THAT big, a 2 pounder has a big enough mouth to swallow the bait specially if has enough time to mouth it, like Matt mentioned, dropping the bait on the bed. Swimming the bait will result in less hook-ups beacuse the fish has less time to mouth the bait properly. To increase the hook up ratio on the gill for swimming it you can add a stinger ( trap ) hook on the top, if the fish attacks the bait you 've got another hook further to the back of the bait. Most small fish I 've caught with the gill hooked themselves on the stinger hook. But obviously, when fishing swimbaits you are not actually targeting 2 pounders, you 're after the biguns, if you happen to hook a smaller fish consider it a bonus.
  4. The deal with the Scorpion was that it had better features and better performance than it 's counterpart, the old CU100/101B. It has further drilled, lighter titanium coated spool which makes it cast a whole lot better than the old Curado 100B. It comes with external adjustable braking centrifugal system, similar to what you find ina reel with magnetic braking, no need to open and remove the sideplate like in the old CU100D. It comes with cold forged handle, handle only found in the domestic high dollar shimano reels like the Chronarch SF, Chronarch 100MG and Calais. It comes with Septon contoured handle knobs, better grip than the regular knobs found in the old Curados. It comes with aluminum spool tension knob cap while the old Curado had a cheap plastic cap. It was a little bit lighter. All those features makes the Scorpion 1000/1001 a better performer than the old Curados. The Scorpion Mg had until the Chronarch 50 mg appeared no comparable model. How much ? if you shop around you can find it as low as $120 Where ? there are many japanese reel dealers in the US and in Japan: JapanTackle, SpecialtyTackle, Brooklyn Bill 's Tackle Shop, GinRinPeche.
  5. You asked ! HERE But don 't blame me later. :
  6. Spare parts availability and warranty issues. If you happen to break any part on the 4x4 SVS system on a Scorpion or Scorpion Mg you are screwed, the only place you can find parts for that system is through Shimano Japan, the rest of the reel is the same. Daiwa Alphas and Daiwa Sol are 100% compatible.
  7. Again: Because you are an old fart that learned to fish with righty baitcasters when baitcasters were only manufactured in righty version.
  8. Yup, albinism happens naturally but the chances of an albino surviving in the wild are slim, in hatchery raised fish albinism is also a desirable trait reason why it 's perpetuated, in some species of fish it 's more common than in others, in trout is common in bass it 's not.
  9. Man, when will I learn not to click on those linky links when I 'm drinking a Coke ? : Now I have to clean the danged keyboard ! :-/
  10. Sniff, sniff...........hey, I can smell bananas. ;D
  11. It 's not about power it 's about action. Back then in the age of the dinosaurs when I started to fish there were no graphite crankbait rods, the way to compensate the stiffness of the tip was to reduce the power, but now since there are crankbait specific rods with moderate actions there 's no point in getting a "general prupose " medium rod for crankbaiting, you select the power depending upon your needs the action will be the same. Very little cover you can go with a medium, lots of cover you can go with a medium heavy.

  13. Alphas: 6.4 oz Alphas Type F: 6.2 oz Alphas Itö : 6.0 oz Comparable to the domestic Sol in characteristics. And if you shop around, cheaper than the Sol ( $185 vs $230 )
  14. The most: even contest between crankbait, spinnerbaits & soft plastics The biggest: jig & trailer
  15. My true BaitMonkey gave to me: 3 Megabass BaitX 2 Megabass Cyclone 1 Megabass Margay Stepcat 1 Megabass Deep X 200 and 1 Megabass Anthrax 100 HO, HO, HO !
  16. It used to be fiberglass for cranks but the new crankbait rods made from graphite/glass blend are a much better than older glass rods, are more sensitive than glass and lighter.
  17. GinRinPeche Heddonbasser Papaiyamango 's Sayaka Those are the one that got the items ( rare or hard to find ) with good prices and an impecable feedback.
  18. Fishingrulz nailed it, you can have an albino in almost everything ( the only known animal where albisnism has never been reported are cockroaches ). The only "albino" bass I 've ever seen ( a pic ) was reported about two years ago but is was not a true albino ( fair skin, red eyes, not the iris, the eye ).
  19. The Rattling Fat Rap was good but the Shallow Running Fat Rap.........golllly molllly ! lethal is the best way to describe it. Heddon 's Sonics and Super Sonics are still my favorite lipless cranks.
  20. That 's what happens when a monster company absorbs the little company and put their hands in the management of the little company. Shakespeare took over All-Star a couple of years ago. Fortunately Shimano was a lot smarter when it took over GLoomis, they left GLoomis as it was.
  21. Apparently the monkey isn't the only one who been working overtime lately. I think Raul has spent more on Japanese tackle in the last month than I will make this year. Ratz ! .......I think me needs a bigger boat :.
  22. And a rabid monkey which counts more than three french hens, two turtle doves and the partridge on the pear tree. And still there 's more to come !
  23. I think that the only way to know Gman which one is more lively is performing a cold water test placing one of each in a container with cold water, the one that after let 's say 30 min in bath is more lively would be my choice. I can 't say anything about which one is more lively under such circumstances, water here doesn 't get cold enough to make much of a difference between both, but one thing is for shure, leave that pork trailer without some kind of protective moist pouch and 30 min later it will turn into a crispy crisp mass specially during the spring.
  24. Mailman just dropped in my lap another package from Japan: Another Alphas Type F Gan Craft Jointed Claw Monster Jack Jr Lucky Craft Amago Megabass Type X. I wish me a merry Christmas I wish me a merry Christmas And a very happy next year. Same to Ya 'll !
  25. Common sense .- the least "common" of all senses. :-?
