  1. Wow! What a great video! Looks pretty easy! Guess you have to practice the "feathering." sort of like the "educated thumb" on baitcasters. Wonder why he pitches with his LEFT hand and switches? Seems like if the reel handle is on the left, you could just pitch with the RIGHT and keep the rod in that hand instead of switching.
  2. I have lots of baitcasters and love them all! But I have not learned to pitch, and with all the cover I fish on the bayou, I need to start. While trying to learn to pitch on the baitcaster, I just didn't do well with the "flipping" of the wrist to get the bait out low. And it seemed with all of the great reels I have (Pixy, Alpha, Steez) it should go well. But it doesn't. I'm a little up in age and seems my wrist has a hard time doing that motion. Therefore, I was thinking that Pitching with a Spinning outfit should be way easier. But I really have NO idea. So I want to know for you guys who DO pitch with a spinning outfit, how goes it with you for that particular purpose? I'll be fishing mostly in a small bayou with lighter baits....nothing over 1/2 oz, and water from 2-12 feet most often. I already have a 15 year old white pearl Stradic 1000FE and an old Spirex 2000. But I want ONE really good spinning outfit and I've just about decided to splurge and get a Shimano Twinpower C3000. After looking at all the stats, that's the one I want. I'll probably set it up with a Dobyns Champion rod. I'll be using it for jerkbaits, worms, cranks, of course.....but I REALLY want to know if I can PITCH WELL with it. Thanks in advance for your comments. Sometimes old dogs CAN learn a few new tricks!! LOL!
  3. Good call! I bought a 1lb spool of 8# test (8000 yards) for about $22. All I can say is WOW!! Now I can respool often.
  4. I think when my bearings start to freeze up would be a great indicator that it's time for me to be off the water!! Lol!! I've only been on the water ONCE, when I was young, when the rod guides froze up and the line wouldn't shoot through. Packed up and went in!! Of course I don't have to deal with the conditions a lot of you guys face, thank goodness! We just have Hurricanes!! On a more serious note, I've had upgraded bearings in 4 reels. I don't ever wish for more casting distance down here on the bayous. But, I DO find that there is LESS EFFORT on my regular casts. But, as Franco says, a good cleaning may have done exactly the same thing. I HAVE noticed that the ceramic bearings on one reel are "Screaming MiMi's!" But, the older and deafer I get, the less it bothers me.
  5. I think you will be pleased with the Extreme ML. I have the 6'6" model and am always surprised at how great a rod it is. Have it paired with an old Stradic 1000FE. The rod is about 10 years old and still going strong. In fact, I also have 2 Extremes for baitcasting that are great sticks! At $79 they are definiteyl a best buy!
  6. I just got my spool and was trying to decide what reel to put it on and for what use. What I inferred from the video was that this "could" be a pretty good line for the frog fishing that I do in lily pads. Almost ALL of my frog fishing here is in the pads and I have used braid to help both stay on top and also to "cut" through the pads and stems should it become entangled. This line, if it is truly waterproof (and STAYS that way) will be much appreciated if it floats better than what I have. The 10# diameter concerns me a bit because I usually use a 6 or 8# diameter which tends to "cut" cleaner. I'll have to see if this does the same. Frog season down here in South Louisiana is right around the corner! I'll find out soon. In the meantime, I'm happy for my $5.00 line. Whether I'll buy some at the regular price will depend on satisfying my concerns on the frog fishing. For me, personally, I don't see it anywhere else in my line up. Seems like a nice "niche" line, in my case.
  7. Chartreuse and white spinnerbait with gold blades.
  8. I think the absolute lightest in spinning you may find is the discontinued Shimano CUMULUS series, known for its lightness and sensitivity. I just received the casting model this morning and am blown away at how light and sensitive it is. While looking I also saw a spinning rod on clearance....the Cumulus, that is. If you are interested, pm me and I'll tell you where to find it and how much it is. It's FAR better than the Cumara! I ordered mine 2 days ago and it came today. Perfect, seamless service.
  9. I find 8# is my "Goldilocks" line.....not too light (like 6#) and not too heavy, (like 10#) I have it spooled on my Curado 50E, Daiwa SOL, Pixies (but also go to 6#) and Steez. I use them all for Medium cranks, Pointers, jigs, and shakey heads. All around good size. I find it a good compromise of strength and casting ability.
  10. Micro Carolina rig: small tungsten wt., tiny red bead, Carolina plastic keeper, 4 inches of line and a small Float it beaver on a 2/0 hook. Beaver floats off bottom, as Jay Ell suggested.
  11. QuakeNShake, You are SO right about the Smoke....a real "sleeper" of a rod. I picked mine up for about $75 and it is flat out perfect.......very sensitive and super feather light.
  12. Front after front, water flooding and falling quickly, dirty, and constant winds......all this needs to STOP!! I live a few YARDS from a small "river" Can't even get the boat out now, water in boat slip Sooooooo low!
  13. This was the "winter of my content!" First Megabass rod....Rattle Viper on First ever Steez 103HA G Loomis CBR 781 .....2nd Steez 100SHA Dobyns 704CB Glass......Daiwa TDZ 103 Dobyns 764CB Randy McKabee.....TDZ 100 G Loomis 721......Daiwa Red Airy Pixy Quantum Smoke.....Daiwa Alpha Ito 103. I'm done!!
  14. I remedied most of the pain by getting a full hour massage every Tuesday. First, I went the day after fishing and being sore; I was surprised how well it made me feel. My masseuse said there was a tight spot in my back where the muscles were all bunched up. I, too, also attribute it to the trolling motor. An off balance procedure for sure. As much money as I've spent on fishing tackle, I figured the massage would be just an added cost. She lowered her rate to $40 for the full hour if I went once a week. Best $40 I EVER spent on "fishing tackle!"
  15. I agree with you both! While I really like Yozuri and have several large rolls of it, I fish it a lot. And I change lines on my reels a lot....just because I'm one of those guys that likes to try different lines. I find Yozuri great for pitching and spinnerbait fishing. But the Sunline Super Natural works much better on my Pointers and Visions. I have Skeletor's experience in that the Yozuri somehow impedes the action, while Super Natural enhances it. I know I can feel the fish better with the Super Natural. Both have their uses. I wouldn't tend to use either one for "finesse fishing" however. They are both good "medium value" lines......not premium.
  16. I have both the 704CB Glass and the 764CB Randy McAbee. I bought the 704Glass first and used it to cast Pointer 100's, 78's, Staysees, and 1.5 Squarebills. It handles ALL of those well, including the Megabass Vision 110. The rod loads very easily and "slingshots" the lures out with very little wrist only effort. I liked it so much I wanted another one, but decided to try the 764CBRM for fun. I find it is a stiffer tip, but casts the heavier Vision 110's a little better, along with the 2.5 RC Squarebills. It takes a larger lure to load it than the 704. I have identical reels on both of them: TDZ's, supertuned. I take both rods with me: the 704 has a Pointer 78 on it (Sexy Chartreuse) and the 764 has a 2.5 LC RC crankbait (bull perch.} Both of these are casting wonders!! I'm sure the 704CB Graphite and 705 Graphite are also wonderful rods. But I like the "give" for the trebles....very forgiving.
  17. Welcome to the "Dark Side," Josh!! I know someone who could might "loan" you a Stradic to try it out!! I think it's the finesse 1000 model.
  18. I did the same! Bought the Chronarch 50E off TW for $150! Already have a Curado 50E so I'll get to compare. I liked the 50E so much I wanted another one....and this was a perfect opportunity. Also got the Powell Max 702 Cast for $75 to put it on!! They are already sold out! Glad I made a quick decision this morning.
  19. Wow, Joshua! Looks like a 5 pound plus! Great fishing in a small place, as you say! Good luck on the fishing this morning! See you later! Mitch
  20. thanks for the heads up! I ordered the 6# along with some Lake Fork Magic Shads and creature baits. So far, I've been VERY pleased with the 8#, 10# and 12# Yozuri. Want to try some 6# on my Pixies!
  21. I have the Costas in 580P amber. Works well, and I like to run the boat with them, because they are shatter resistant and very light on the face. However, I WEAR the Costa 580 GLASS Green Mirror when fishing. I fish freshwater and mostly stained water. I am perfectly satisfied. Both glasses are excellent I also have some Maui Jim's and feel that they are on par with the Costas.....I use them for "fashion" glasses. Of course, my REAL FASHION glasses are the Ray Ban Vintage Clubmasters and Wayfarers. Nothing like them on the street!!
  22. I have a new Bass Tracker 16 foot and it had a little water in the bilge. I found out that the through the hull pipe had a crack in it because the expansion of the floatation material had put a lot of pressure on it and cracked it. Seems that they have had this issue before. Brought it back to Tracker dealer and they installed a new intake pipe. I also plug the live well and use it for storing my soft tackle bag.....a 16 footer doesn't have much "spare" room!
  23. Seems like years and years ago there was a "cork arbor" that fit over the spool arbor, to do just this....take up space so you wouldn't have to use so much line. Has anyone else seen one of these? You young guys wouldn't know what I'm talking about! LOL!
  24. I had this same issue when I was young. I always was at the front of the boat while he was in the back. After outcatching me several times with the same bait, he told me that we both fished differently. For instance, in those days a white spinnerbait was what we threw most and caught the most fish on. He commented that I cast AROUND cover, but not close enough to hang up, while he cast INTO cover and pulled the fish out of it. I observed what he was talking about and had to agree he was right. Now with a worm, it was a "technique." He would pull it over grass and "POP" it loose from the grass and that's when they would hit. I didn't pop it and caught far fewer fish. In the end we had a great fishing partnership: I could FIND the fish while he could LOAD the boat!! Also another difference is that he was more FOCUSED than I was. I had to learn to be consistently focused, and I did.
