In the past I've mostly been a walleye guy. A couple years ago we mad a short fall trip to Roy Lake, SD with my oldest son and had a blast on the big smallies. Haven't been able to get them off my mind since. I fish with a 9yo and a 6yo, so I've had to wait patiently for their casting to improve enough to survive the day in the boat, though, so most of the fishing we've done has been panfishing and crankbait trolling for walleyes. I think this year might be safe enough to do some bassin', though

I can't recall where I read the study, but I believe it has been proven that deep hooked fish with the hook left in have a high rate of death from infection. Good reason for even live bait fishermen to use circle hooks.
