5 Dollar Fishing Game

Next stop is 10lbs. However, I caught my first "big one" (for me at least as I started bass fishing Jan. 1st of this year) at 5.3lbs. :-)

That's what I figured. The wind has been light to nothing the past few days and then today it was a bit breezy similar to what tomorrow is going to be. I was watching the top of the pond and saw the "ripples" in it. It made me wonder if the ripples were going to the north, then would the fish be swimming north too, etc. That was my main concern. As far as casting, it was pretty simple. I just waited for the wind to "rest" and then casted, reeled in the slack, and set the hook!!!!

Not sure if have this posted in the right thread or not. :-/ Anyway, how does wind effect shoreline fishing? We are not taking the boat out tomorrow, instead we are doing some pond fishing. The weather here in NC has been in the 80's and sunny. The wind for tomrrow is 5-15. When the wind gets going about 10-15, does it effect the fish? Or do they not really care being they are deep in the water?

Hey all! I was using regular 10lbs. mono line on my rod. Recently, I have been breaking lines and losing fish because the waters I have found have BIG fish. GREAT! However, I got new line today. It is the 20lbs. Trilene XL mono. The line feels MUCH thicker and it shows the clinch knot very well. Should I expect to throw some lures any differently because the line is heavier? Or should I just fine tune the adjustments on my Abu Garcia reel such as drag, brake, line speed? Thanks! - Joe

I have seen people guess final numbers at the Bassmaster Classis on Facebook and seen them on other places too. Question is, how do you read them and how are they calculated. For example if someone says they think the three day total is 75-10 or something, what is it exactly? Just have never knew all that stuff. :-). Thanks! Joe

I like to get on the water 3-4 times a week and sometimes it gets to be a pain having to keep re-tieing the lures for each trip. My only concern was the line getting "dried out" between days. The last thing I want is a hook set and then I reel in a loose and empty line with a bass making off with my KVD frog. LOL

Yeah, that's what I figured. It would be a whole lot easier for me to leave them on my rods than to continuously mess with the lures tie on and off each time.

When you get done fishing, do you all leave your lure attached to the line and hook it safely to a spot on the pole? Or do you remove the lure and tie the loose end of the line to an eye on the pole. Wasn't sure if leaving a lure attached for days at a time between fishing dats would weaken the knot or something like that.

I found some articles on this site about Jig Lures. However, are these lures "casted" out and slowly reeled in like any other action lure? Or do you just drop it straight down from the side of the boat and bob it up and down? Thanks! - Joe

Here in central NC one of my favorite lakes has a spot just like that. I have had good luck with a slow reel with a purple or red worm with the two hooks and a spinner in the end with 2 or 3 orange plastic balls about the size of BB's. I am not exactly sure but I believe the style is called weedless. Again, this is just what works for me. The muddier spots tend to get more hits in the worms an sometimes on the brown lizard with neon green speckles. Joe.

So let's say you catch a huge 10 pound or whatever weight bass. You want to have it mounted. To put it bluntly how does the taxidermist kill the bass or do you have to kill it? In regards to the replica alternative how is this done? Bring a picture or something? I saw these two topics mentioned in another thread but there were no specifics on it. Thanks!!! Joe

I have wondered this exact same thing myself. I personally do not have a problem with mounting the actual bass caught.

Thanks for the tips guys. Makes sense to take a little more time in the spots and also to "sense" when the lure needs I be changed. A soft plastic worm is a good lure to try in between making life decisions. I'm learning this game and enjoying doing it with my family too. Met some friends from church who fish too. Nobody on this site warned me of the addictiveness of the sport. :-/

Thanks Capt! I will plan on giving an area about 1-2 hours to give it some time. As for the lure, how often should I be "trying something different" within those couple hours if no hits? Obviously if something hits on a certain crank or spinner I will stay with it or very close to it's design. What do you suggest? - Joe

I have a question about my location on the water in my boat. Let's say I am out in the morning for 5 hours. If I am not catching anything within "?" hours, when should I "move" to another location, or should I try to alternatively change my lure? For example, if I catch nothing from 8am-9am, should I try a different lure or find another spot. This may be one of those million dollar questions, but I just would like some opinions of what you all do to help me out. If I am in a spot where I am catching fish I will stay there, it just gets frustrating and aggravating when I don't. Not really the fact I am getting no hits, but not sure what to do to improve it.
