  1. Where to fish this weekend, where to fish... so many options. Anyone wanna decide for me? Right now it's between mound city, pleasanton, critzer, perry, leavenworth state lake, or maybe even La Cygne. who knows. hahaha
  2. Those are some awesome smallies.
  3. Caught about 20 bass yesterday. Had three or four come unbuttoned and missed a couple of bites. Most of my fish came on a black/blue jig, but had some takers on squarebills, deep diving cranks, and a pit boss. I thought the biggest fish of the day was this guy. As you can see, I was fooled. That rock sure did fight like a seven pounder Anyhow, here is the actual biggest fish of the day. Once again, didn't feel like taking out the scale, which must mean the fish was under four because I rarely weigh fish smaller than four pounds it seems. Mostly dinks yesterday, but that could've been because of the cold front. Or, it could've been because it was my first time at pleasanton. Whatever the case, it was still fun.
  4. So I decided to go with pleasanton east instead of mound city. A little bit closer and it doesn't look like I'll have to deal with a ton of gravel. I know clayton has fished there with success. If anyone else has fished this with success and would like to chime in on some pointers, that'd be great. I have a feeling they'll all still be pretty shallow. It'll be interesting trying to throw together a pattern, but I imagine I'll be pretty shallow most of the time.
  5. Thinking about going to mound city lake this weekend. I need a break from big water for a weekend I think. Anyone have any kind of experience here? I've fished it once and didn't do great, but would like to give it another shot. If not there, I may hit the big pleasonton lake.
  6. I've only been here for a short while, but I think I can say it with some level of authority. Hasn't anyone learned that threads such as these are rarely productive?
  7. Congrats young man! You accomplished something I always dreamed of doing at your age. I'm in my twenties and started fishing again a few years back and I only just caught fish like that one! You're well on your way
  8. Using your terminology, THAT is a walrus. Do you ever have weeks where you're not catching pigs? Sheesh man.
  9. I must say, I do think walmart girl, bassquatch, and walrus will make it into my rotation. Now I just need to go catch some hawgs, or walmart girls rather
  10. Man, you're just slayin em. Making the rest of us look bad. Well, making me look bad anyway!
  11. Buck Perry somehow always manages to be the subject of conversation on this forum. I suppose I need to take the plunge and read some of his stuff.
  12. Thanks for the pointers. I have a topo map but it's not a very good one. I'm looking to buy a navionics chip soon so that should help me a bit in that department. Looks like it's time to visit a new lake then too. I guess I need to hit la cygne before it's boiling. Gosh... so much to learn.
  13. Well folks, I'm a transitioning bank fisherman to boat fisherman, and for the life of me, I can not figure out big water. I've been fishing a lake in kansas city (perry) for the past month now, and each outing I average two bass. I'm putting 5-6 hours in every trip, and I'm happy that I'm at least catching a couple, but 2 fish just ain't cuttin' it. I'd venture to say I'm having a stroke of bad luck, but when I take the boat on smaller water (less than 200 acres), I wack the snot out of em. Perry is roughly 11,500 acres. I'll give you an idea of what today looked like. Fished some pockets, and chunk rock bank without bites. Pulled into a marina and caught a slot fish of a ladder. I thought to myself, good- I'm starting to develop a pattern. Continued to flip the heck out of the docks with no more bites. After this the wind really picked up so I just tried to find wind protected pockets. I fished cranks, jigs, shakyheads, scroungers but once again with no bites. After fishing the wind protected areas, I stumbled across a strip of rip rap jutting out into the main lake. It was there to protect another marina from wind. Tried some cranks with no bites, but got my second fish on a jig. Once again I think- good, I've stumbled across another pattern. I did get a couple more bites on the jig, but swung and missed. I did make an observation in this area. I was reeling my jig back in to make my next cast and I got a bite I wasn't expecting. That made me think I could maybe refine my pattern to a faster bait. So, I fished a wart that was craw colored and didn't have any bites. I probably fished 10-15 different spots and only had results at two, and couldn't really come up with a definite pattern. Both fish came on a jig- that's the only piece of the puzzle I had figured out. So I suppose my question is, how long should it take one to figure out a lake? Perhaps I'm just in the thick of the learning curve right now. I understand that transitioning to bigger bodies of water that are heavily pressured in a boat is an entirely different ball game. I'm just having trouble figuring it all out. Any words of advice for this newbie?
  14. Trying to figure out what to do with the approaching storms today folks. Some of em look pretty nasty. Gonna wait it out and see if I can't launch somewhere this afternoon I guess. Hopefully the storms roll through sooner than later
  15. So, I always get a big kick out of hearing what other people call big bass. Certainly, all of us are familiar with the terms pig, hawg, giant, etc. Here are some that I hear used, just not nearly as often. Some of them bring a big smile to my face, or even make me laugh. Swamp Donkey. Mule. Toad (or Toadzilla). Dog. One member here used the word heavysauras. For some reason that one really tickled me. So, what are some of the more obscure names you've heard used for big bass?
  16. Looks like you guys really "fooled" the bass! (I had to)
  17. I had a question, and I'm not sure if any of you would know off hand. Both hummingbirds and bass pro shops (where I purchased the unit from) website say that this unit has 4000 watts ptp power, but the manual included with the unit says it only has 2400 watts. Needless to say, I'm a little bit confused. Did hummingbird crank out a volume of 385ci di units that only had 2400 watts of power and I got the shaft? Or, is it simply a misprint in their manual. Any light shed on this would put me at ease. If I somehow managed to purchase a 385ci di with 2400 watts of power (if they even exist), I'll be a little steamed. -Blake
  18. Little slough creek is pretty much that small arm that juts to the right around old town. According to my map, there's some nice channel banks, points, rock, and pockets all in that area.
  19. Going to perry again tomorrow. I'm thinking of getting off the beaten path and going up north, into the little slough creek arm. Has anyone ever heard of anyone doing very well up this far? There are some interesting features on my map that have me intrigued. Anyhow, unless someone can convince me otherwise (that the fishing is terrible up there), I'll be launching from there.
  20. Sounds like I need to get down to melvern and catch some smallmouth. Believe it or not, I've never caught one
  21. Unsure on the weight of the largemouth. I can only speculate. Heavy three, or low four maybe? I would've weighed her, but the wind was blowing me right in the point so I just threw her back. Here's a picture at a different angle that doesnt make her look so huge, but man she was fat. But yeah, my heart sure was pounding with those drum. I thought that I had a some huge largies on, but only weird purple and white fish that knocked at me and smelled bad. Oh well.
  22. Went to perry yesterday. Water was pretty muddy, at least by my standards. Maybe that's just perry, but I'm sure the rain didn't help. Caught 2 whites, 2 largies, and 3 drum. Talk about a weird day. All of my bass came out of Rock creek, on the thin rock point by the marina. Went to slough creek and fished some rocky points, and caught three drum, two of them on a jig. Once I started catching drum, that's all I could catch. Guess I got cursed at the end of the day. Not a great day by any standards, but I guess I did alright for tackling big water for the first time.
  23. Thanks for all the pointers. I bought a lake map last night, and I'll probably call the marina today to see what water temps are. Last question on perry is this, was there a recent bass kill in the lake? I got reading various lake reports and one guy said last year was awful for perry because the bass population disappeared (then mentioned something about a virus, etc). Did this guy just have trouble finding them or was there a legitimate bass kill in the lake?
  24. I wonder if the spawn will be going on, if it hasn't already. Guess we'll see. I'd love to run into some big girls
  25. Thinking about hitting perry for the first time this weekend. Any pointers?
