  1. I get line twist even using my casting gear with flukes. Its just gonna come with using them. You cant get the hook perfectly centered every single time. At least not if your over 40 and nature has taken its course on your eyes. Most of the twist comes from retrieving fast to the boat to launch a quick cast. A fluke by its shape is going to twist your line when getting retrieved fast straight in. The very shape that's hydro-dynamically engineered to be erratic does it. A keal weighted hook might help.
  2. Halco makes very good lures. Most Ive seen were offshore and bigger Barra lures. I imagine that model was made for Barra's and Murray Cod.
  3. December wont find you much on the beach. Flounder maybe, the macs wont be here yet. Snook will be up river or near to them in back bays. Trout will probably be your best bet. If you have one a spinning outfit will be more versatile here, keep your lure choices at and below 1/4oz.. Wade or rent a yak in the backwaters of Matlacha and Pine Island. Wherever you go the water will be clear, low and you'll need to cast long with light subtle baits.
  4. Daiwa Lexa was a good idea, stick with it. I've been happier with it than the others. Solid gears and Daiwa's twistbuster anti twist works better than the ideas of the other brands.
  5. A Hardy Perfect if its Made In England and in very good condition is most certainly worth more than $10. Check out thebasspond or faol and you can get lots of info on its value.
  6. Stop by Economy Tackle on 41 and get some advise. There's another shop in Saba Plaza near the 41 and 301 intersection. They can be a lot of help. Look up Steve Gibsons blog on google he has lots of good info on Sarasota Bay. Also google Bent Rods blog. Snook are just starting to show up on the beach and big flounder have been here for a couple months just feet from the shore of the beach in the trough. Trout are still in the bays and intercoastal. Don't forget to visit the Venice Jetty's. A med. light spinning rod, 2000 size reel, white bucktails, white, clear and Arkansas Shiner CAL tails or MirroLure Little Johns on a 1/8th and 1/4oz jig heads are a great start.
  7. You can make an elevated rack that hangs your reels in safety out of pvc. The tip end elevates the rods over the closed tailgate. Ive used one I made for years until a client at work vandalized it. You can find examples posted on catfishing boards.
  8. I have a buddy who recently got the MLF 3 piece Tidemaster. Its a sweet rod but it is definitely nowhere near a medium and likes line and lure weight in the lighter end of its designed parameters. Not an all purpose rod at all but a great crankbait or 1/4oz topwater rod.
  9. You got it backwards. Light oil on the worm gear or levelwind. Grease on the main gears.
  10. A 6000 not a 6000C right? The axle is integral to the spool kind of 6000? If Abu doesn't have them try hookless *.
  11. All because its shimano or Daiwa might not mean it has a bb roller guide, even if its a newer model. Im told my new Lexa has a bushing. Daiwa and shimano recommend taking line of the bottom of the spool because of their anti line twist technologies, so say their techs. That way you are actually putting one twist into the line per handle rotation but the twist is removed upon the cast and hopefully correct retrieve. So say the manufacturers.
  12. Used a Boca for about a year for Tarpon. Heavy. Finish started coming off on first trip just from my wedding band. After a year i found the ceramic disks had cracked. Lots of Okuma fans, lots of haters too. For your kind of fishing i think only Penn Daiwa and Shimano could cope. What about Daiwas Dogfight or Saltiga?
  13. The new Penn Spinfisher V. If you can wait, by the end of summer the new reissue of the Classic 704/706 will be on shelves and still made in USA.
  14. $89 Abu 4600C3's clutch, simple, stamped, cheap, never recalled by manufacturer. $99- $249 Revo, any model take your pick, clutch slightly more complicated, formed out of white metal, soft, a more expensive part, silently recalled by manufacturer after hoardes of broken reels. Whats that term college folk use about the law of diminishing return for your money?
  15. You bet they share many parts! Thats business, they wouldnt make as much money if they didnt. Talk to mechanics that work at a dealer and you discover high end often lays on the surface and in the buyers mind. The Korean factory that makes the parts for the Cobalt and Spark makes much of the parts that fill up a Caddy. And they dont have a 1st class parts line and a 3rd class parts line, just one BIG parts line.
  16. Ned Kehde is an excellent author and fisherman like only a true multispecies angler can be. Interesting choices he makes for rod/reel/line. Thanks for sharing that SissySticks. I for one am perfectly happy with using my old Ambassadeurs and find everything made right now to be over rated. And theres alot of savvy in using old lures that no one has been throwing for a coons age.
  17. How so are the drag materials different between styles of reels? Besides shimano using felt, I think all other big names have evolved to carbon. Each style uses stainless steel. Snook have you scale tested your spinners drags. Could they be contaminated with oil?
  18. "Gone Fishin'-instead of just wishin' " by Tom T. Hall
  19. You see it in the Pacu , Taimen, Sturgeon and Snakehead episodes. Its a Chronarch. The rod is a European travel rod I think. It has a black eva trim piece at the front of the foregrip.
  20. Thats why I feel the reel is more important than most. A fly rod of any weight except the broomhandle 12-16wts will not horse a bass out of cover. Fly line itself is as strong as 60-80lbs pulling strength. Heavy duty leader can cope with the cover, so can a reel with a strong drag. I cant horse a tarpon out of the mangroves with my 9wt rod but patience, strong leader and a reel with a real drag I can get it to my feet. The same applies to a bass that tarpon could eat.
  21. Im sure no BPS rod could compare to a Sage. But yes, fly equipment is illegal in all FLW and B.A.S.S. tournaments. Fly in specific, nothing to do with the seperate rod maximum length rules. Sage, Redington, Ross and anyone else who quoted and pitched the tournament schtick did so strictly to gain yet another niche of the market, a market they were seeing as dwindling as the last of "The River Runs Through It" crowd ventured away from the fly.
  22. I dont use anything but a 6wt anymore, I find 8wt.s too heavy to have fun with but its better for bass size poppers and sliders. I find the Sage Bass rod to be nonsense. Their whole premise of it being for tournaments is a all out lie considering that a fly rod is against the rules of the very organizations conducting the tournaments. I dont even use a 10wt. for the snook, reds and tarpon here. Maybe because I prefer a lighter outfit is why I find the reel more important than an expensive rod. I want a excellent drag as I prefer to fight the fish on the reel and not with line at my feet. The great thing about fly fishing for bass is its so open to your own preferences. Light, heavy wt.s, using flies you make yourself, its all up to you. And a blast because it makes for so much more of a fight. The best thing is with the poor economy really good rods and reels have become more competitively priced.
  23. There's drag grease and there's gear grease, which are we talking about? Gear grease should never be used on a drag. Yamaha marine lube is good for gears. The shimano rep posted here years ago that hot sauce will void your warranty.
  24. Im glad to see someone bring up the noise that the hydrodynamics of superlines make underwater. It was mentioned and displayed on a Hunt for Big Fish show years back but never exponded on. Interesting, superlines degrade quicker now. Planned or engineered life expectancy?...Gotta wonder. Treating your line just like fly fishermen do, cleaning and stretching. I wonder if it would catch on. Its one of the things that turns me off of fly fishing. Dont I recall reading that stretching floro weakens and clouds it causing its invisability to go away?
  25. Motor Oil limited edition color at Dicks. Weightless texposed around cover or bare bank. Throw it on the shore and drag it in slowly.
