Have you tried a spybait? I found them to be excellent smallmouth medicine if you need to get deep.

I've fished there a few times. Can be a bit moody, but can be tremendous if you get it right. Could do worse than have a morning with Billy Kohles, who's an excellent guide on there, to gain some pointers about what's going on at the time.

I'm lucky enough to be invited over to fish with a friend at his cottage on the Rideau chain most summers. Always the highlight of my year. We often take a day on the St Lawrence with a guide (Dean Meakes), but thought this year about trying a day on Simcoe. Anyone got any good recommendations for a smallmouth guide for early August on there, or other suggestions?

Just a guess, but is it asking you to tell it what the max RPM for the motor is, so it can warn you if you exceed them?

Oh dear, there aren't enough letters on my keyboard to list them all. I have the added joy of having to import the crackpot ideas, then try to apply them to fish that aren't bass. You'd think I'd learn, but I'm the one who is born every minute, apparently.

Last generation vanfords and stradics, earlier models too. It's part of their bail design, but if you use them as others have described they work fine, just me being awkward with the way I use the reel. I have a very efficient way of putting my finger on the spool as I open the bail to make the cast, rather than looping the line under my index finger, which is more common. I open the bail at whatever part of the rotation it is in, and at one point in the rotation shimanos will click open, but snap shut when cast, Daiwas just won't let you fully open the bail at the same point, so it's not an issue.

Great minds! I did pretty much the same thing, though using masking tape to thicken up the blank, when I was modifying the handles of some St Croix rods years ago. They're still holding up fine.

Haha, yet your boat steering wheel is on the correct side. That Henry Ford was clearly an idiot. Yep. No need to look at the reel, just open the bail, touch the spool with my finger and cast. Can do it in one fluid movement as I swing the rod back to make a cast. It happens with all the Shimano I've ever owned. Currently a couple of Vanfords and three Stradics Can say the modification is a complete success. Thank you for the suggestion. Really easy on the vanford, just take the rotor off and pry the ramp out. I will be doing it to all my current Shimanos and will now look at them as a possibility in the future.

I think you may well have the correct solution. Just removed the ramp and it appears to have cured the issue completely. There is a hard stop if you try to close the bail with the handle, but as I never do that I don't see it being a problem. Thank you. I will give it a test drive tomorrow, but it looks very promising.

Just looked at a schematic and it looks like there's a bail trip lever, which might be removable. Going to investigate, but I don't have a torx head small enough, so waiting on Amazon. If it is possible that would be a super outcome and I'm glad this thread has made me think about this problem more than just being infuriated by it.

Unless I'm casting really heavy weights I always touch my finger to the spool to trap the line to cast, so that I can control the line through the cast properly by feathering it with my finger, so as a result I don't need the bail to be in a particular position to hook the line under my finger, that's probably why I have the issue with shimano reels as I open the bail wherever it is when I'm ready to make a cast. I wonder if there's an easy way to remove the auto closing mechanism to make the reels fully manual closing, as I never use the auto trip. 🤷‍♂️

No need to close it by hand when it closes itself mid cast. 😄

It's just a design difference between Daiwa and Shimano, one which I seem to be the only one who has a problem with. I'm special.

Every one of my Shimano reels has the same problem. At the point where the auto trip trips the bail, if you were to close the handle, if you open the bail at that part of the rotation the bail locks open but snaps shut mid cast. The daiwas won't lock open at that part of the rotation, so it never happens.

Every few years I buy a Shimano spinning reel, and every few years it reminds me why I prefer Daiwa. What is it with the bail mechanism on Shimano. If you open the bail at the "wrong" part of the rotation it will snap back mid cast. Daiwas don't do that, They just feel a bit wrong if you're at the critical spot and won't stay open, so you adjust, Shimanos just lock open but snap closed mid cast. I'm clearly the only one who finds this infuriating, but just wanted to vent. 😄

I have a weakness for jerkbaits and lipless baits. I barely throw crankbaits so can walk past isles of them without flinching, but the shiny rattly isles get me every time. 110jr +1 is probably what I have most faith in, but all the megabass are good, from the x70 to the Bigger 110s, they're all beautifully made and painted, but then so are my other fav brand OSP. Rudra is a naughty bait and Veruna a slightly smaller version. Duo make some great baits too. LC pointers seem to catch when others don't, so they're mandatory too. KVD 300 work, but you have to whack them like a demented woodpecker to get them to move like the more expensive baits. Stunna, meh, Rapala, Meh. Both get thrown when the cover looks particularly knarly, or pikey, but never first choices. Spinning rod for the win, BTW 😉

I don't know whether you're that far away with what you have. The Lowe website says the 178 is rated to 115hp and it looks like a very wide boat, so you might be struggling for much more speed. Probably worth getting vessel view as I wonder if your tach is a bit off. Motor height might be something to play with too, but I think you need to be sure of your RPMs before doing anything much to it as the motor should go up to 6000rpm I believe and if your tach is reading correctly you would want to go down in pitch, not up, to get the max RPM to nearer 6000.

What sort of boat is it? Do you have vessel view, or similar to confirm that the rev counter is accurate?

Not sure what closing the boat launch is supposed to achieve? Is there something particularly vulnerable in Camanche?

Ott Defoe has a good video on tying braid loops instead of using split rings. Very easy to do and ideal on baits that are difficult to get small enough split rings onto the lure to stop the hooks tangling as you can control the loop size very accurately.
