  1. Tonawanda Creek and Ellicott Creek are close to school/work, and the Buffalo River is a short walk down the street from a friend's house downtown. Just looking to just do a little shore fishing before the weather gets kayak-ready for me to put the rack back on my car and start lugging that around to new places. Favorite color grubs? I have a couple different colors and kinds but obviously if they start working I won't have a choice but to go expand my selection. (the fisherman's dilemma)
  2. Hi everyone, I found a couple neat new little hidden away fishing spots on a local creek and since it's pretty early spring, the water is moving a little quicker than it will be in the summer. What sorts of lures work well with casting up stream from shore and letting it drift back downstream in colder water this time of year? NY law says you can't be fishing for walleye from March 15 until May, and trout opens in April so I have about a week or so left before I have to stop fishing the area just to try and avoid any hassle with anyone thinking I'm shooting for spawning walleye. Any hints at all in terms of lures and techniques would be much appreciated.
  3. Thanks for the warm welcome everyone.
  4. Hi everyone, My name is Dave and I am a PhD student in the engineering school at the University at Buffalo in Buffalo, NY. I joined the forums here a couple days ago and wanted to leave an introduction post on here. I grew up fishing on Oneida Lake and since moving out here for school have purchased a kayak in order to get out on some newer waters and do some fishing. This year I hope to try some new tactics and get some new fishing experiences under my belt. Hope all is well with everyone and I wish you all lucky casts!
  5. Thanks guys for the advice. Since I won't be getting another rod how about some advice for some soft baits and some jig heads for shaky head and baits for drop shots. I am up in NY and I can handle the color selection portion, I just need some advice in terms of baits. Thanks in advance for any help.
  6. I am originally from central new york, but now reside in the buffalo area for grad school. Thanks for the advice. I will focus on just learning the techniques and doing a little fishing with them with what I have. I will definitely stick with what I have for now. The school leans can wait until after I get done with school, for now it's time to worry about next summer's fishing adventures. haha.
  7. I am new to both of these techniques. I want to do a little of each this year and was wondering what I could do in terms of rods (the cheaper the better as I am in graduate school and need to save the money if possible). I currently have a couple spinning set ups and one is a 6'6 ML but is a 2 piece. So I don't really know where to go with a new rod purchase in terms of length and power in order to potentially get into these 2 techniques this year. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.
