  11. if ur making ur own I would use a EWG hook. you can T rig a fluke on the back and never get snagged even when coming thru the nastiest timber
  12. stop watching the marketing/flashy sponsored item mentioned every 30 seconds youtube videos and start watching the DIY/make ur own tackle videos. no loud music w/ adreneline shots of drag screaming bass but you'll learn a ton about how guys all over the country make their own tackle while on a budget
  13. if you have to ask the answer is no. asking means you are on a budget and there a PLENTY of quality rods on the market. i just bought a Shakespear Micro rod at Wally word for $15. the action is as nice as my $200 orvis fly rod and my $150 Fenwick RiverRunner. It doesn't have a warranty and the components might not last as long but for $15 I'll just buy another. there are plenty of guys here that are fishing 20+yr old $30 rods and they catch the exact quantity/quality size bass as everyone the guys with the latest and greatest gear.
  14. fishing from a boat can be overwhelming b/c of too many options. plus you can lose a major advantage you might not have recognized from shore: from shore you are always reeling uphill. bass pin baitfish against the shore when attacking so reeling from deep to shallow on the bank preys on the natural instincts of a bass. when i moved from the shore to a boat i couldn't figure out why i started to suck to bad. too many choices plus i wasn't reeling uphill. then i started positioning my boat literally against the shore (i'll often hold onto the shore/rock/bank with my foot to anchor) and my catch rate went thru the roof again. plus i started catching quality and quantity b/c i had access to so many more locations from boat than from shore. i very rarely reel down hill ie shallow to deep, unless i'm working a jig down a ledge.
  15. Marie, a nice, calm and respectable Cajun lady went into the pharmacy, walked up to the pharmacist whose name is Boudreaux, looked straight into his eyes, and said, "I would like ta buy some cyanide." Then Boudreaux asked, "Mees, Why in de world do ya need cyanide?" Marie replied, "Ah need it to poison my husband." Boudreaux eyes got big and he explained, "Lord have mercy! A..h can't give you cyanide to kill you husband, dat's against de law! I'll lose my license! They'll throw boat of us in jail! All kinds of bad tings will happen. You CANNOT have any cyanide!" Marie reached into her purse and pulled out a picture of her husband Thibodeaux in bed with the pharmacist's wife. Boudreaux looked at the picture and replied, "You didn't told me you had a prescription."
  16. is that the same as listening to ur skydiving instructor?
  17. yes sir. I consider myself to live in floridelphia'. everyone in the south think philly is the north but it's paradise compared to the pounding my NY, MI and Canadian brothers take. I couldn't agree more! Horse race journalism has been around for ages but it's out of control with all the types of media we have now. an election can be a landslide but that doesn't sell advertising space. only a neck and neck, barn burner race till the end keeps'm tuned in! i read a Harvard study that said the OJ Simpson trial was the turning point where newsrooms went from being an automatic loss to being extremely profitable (prior to that only prime time and sports broadcasting made money). study said the crime rate actually has been steadily dropping since 2000 but the reporting of crime has increased by over 1000%. stay tuned....!
  18. imo that answers the most important question and dictates your entire plan of attack. a 3/4 jig and/or C-rig will be ur eye's and let you know when ur on/around rocks and weeds. make sure you have several marker buoys in the boat. kick a buoy overboard as soon as you catch a fish. you'll be amazed how fast you drift/get blown off a spot. buoys are cheap so i even let them in the water and come back to fish the spot an hour or two later. i've yet to have someone steal one. plus i don't mind if other boats fish them b/c they don't know the correct angle and either part their boat on top of the buoy or drop their lure right on top of it. i drop a buoy to mark deep weed beds and most guys scratch their heads wondering why a buoy is floating in the middle of 'nowhere'. structure fishing is a whole new world so when the fish are beating me up I head for weeds. shallow weeds that break the surface are easiest but have smaller fish. after you get bored with the shallow weeds head to deeper weeds, eventually finding the deepest weeds in the lake. this is a good place to start looking for adult bass. ur heavy jig will bring back weeds from the depths. drag the jig from sediment until you feel the first snag of weeds and just let it sit there. someone will poke their nose out for a snack. deep weeds produce some of my best fish and provide a nice cross over from deep cover to structure type fishing. true topo map/structure fishing can often kick ur @s$ so it's nice to have a plan and be able to pick off the low hanging fruit. use the same drag method to go from sediment to rock. I work extremely fast as long as I'm feeling muddy/sediment but slow WAY down once i feel rocky heaven.
  19. 'fox' and 'news' in the same sentence? wait i think i see one or two flakes sticking!

  21. x2. after reading snakehead whisperer's experience I bought a life jacket that feels/fits nice so I can live to fish another day
  22. An old man is sitting quietly at a bar drinking whisky. After an hour of steady drinking, he leans over and says to the young man next to him, "I bet you 20 bucks I can bite my eye." Obviously this is impossible, and seeing an opportunity to take an easy 20 off a drunk, the young man says, "Okay. You're on." The old man, whips his artificial eye out and bites it. The young man sighs at being so easily fooled and hands over $20. The old man finishes another drink and then leans over again and say, "I bet you 100 bucks I can bite the other eye." Now the young man knows the man can see him and doesn't have two artificial eyes. So again he says. "You're on." The old man then whips off his dentures and bites the other eye.
  23. SBMT handle is 3" shorter. at this point it's splitting hairs. if you found a good deal forget about the +/- 3". the action is the same on both rods and you'll love it.
  24. yes buy the 795 sbml! it's Mike Long's rod so it has an extra few inches on the handle. it casts 2 oz lures like a dream. I'd skip the 8" Hudds for now. I take my 6" 68 specials and 7" ms slammer night hunting along the shoreline of my local reservoir. I have to be very careful with my casting form or after 2 hrs it's very easy to put a hurting on my wrists, elbows or shoulders with 2 oz swimbaits. and like i said it can be come discouraging fast. lots of times I'll only take 2 rods: my 795 with a 6" swimbait and a senko rod. I'm hunting for Bubba with the swimbaits but if that doesn't work I'm humble and willing to take anybody that comes alone for a senko snack. there will be plenty of 25% off sales from now till spring so you can pick up any Champion rod for $195. but can do even better used in the forums. The Okuma is a decent rod but I'd spend the extra few dollars on the Dobyns. even if you don't stay with swimbaits you can use the rod for catfish, musky or live bait for bass
