Why I have always preferred all straight cork handles & slide reel rings. Not sexy. But fully adjustable to any reel.

Island bass makes a critical point about catching fish in cold water. They are there of course. But the space between playing a fish to shore & then finding enough food is critical. We have no way to tell if we have raised the Lactic Level too high. The fish may die and lay on the shallow bottom for weeks because the gas producing bacteria are inactive. We really have no Idea what the death rate is in N J & N Y. I have asked F & G people. They refused to guess on anything about iced over water & fish. So I stopped my catch & release on 4# lines.

The only rods I need balanced. Are ANY flyrods. I change reel sizes to get a NEUTRAL balance FEEL. Done Required because of rapid pickups & casts each 10 seconds.

Few of us really control our lives as desired. I was born with a bad heart. So I was always sluggish in anything physical or MENTAL. 5 years ago The defects were removed & stints put in with a Pacemaker & Defibrillator. I am finishing up a HUGE honey do list for several people. It is better to healthy & enough money. Than rich & sickly for a life time. I was 0 for 2. for 80 years. I agree about soft rods not being good for lightweight lures. I have 1 flyrod that is stiff. I have a Mitchell 300 with 4# Ande mono on it, Excellent for small 2" rubber fish in green color. I only cast with the wind .

Health is a # 1 problem for me, wife & my age group. Everything else is good / almost O K. My problem is severe random pains everywhere with any weather changes. Bad year in N J I yelp sometimes. But other age problems are tolerable. So grateful I can do anything physical. Life is great.

I feel confident in saying that almost every reel today is outstanding in the price range you want. IF built as designed. I buy some reels and give them away to kids where I stay each summer. This summer is some of my personal rods & reels being given away with a Zip Lok freezer bag of terminal & lures to help them. None of anything has ever changed from like new operation. Some of us need to get a good deal. Others need to buy the highest priced. & complain about the operation not being perfect or needing to be sent in for repairs.

So a $ 75 combo of rod, reel & line will not catch many nice fish ? Wish someone would have told me that decades ago. Now I know why I am catching less fish each year.

They should be always trying to make it cheaper & smaller. Diameter is not that important to anyone.

Casting into the wind. Stiff line. VERY POOR design of a short cheap spool. NOT using the ANTI REVERSE lever correctly. I end the cast with the rid tip pointing straight out from my belly. When lure hits water. I FIRST LIFT THE ROD UP. Then crank the bail closed as I lower the tip back to being horizontal. Ready to set the hook. It takes me about 1/4 second after lure plops on water to have line coming in snuggly. I have used automatic bail arm closing for over 50 years on many reels. Never a problem. You are screwed if a big fast fish hits the lure at high speed & rips line off . Closing the bail with your fingers ? Great way to get your knuckles smashed with 40 to 80 # line & drag set to + 40 pound if possible. As soon as the bail catches the line it whips the bail arm backwards. WACK WACK WACK . The auto bail SETS the hook instantly and protects fingers.

Why I fish only weeds edges. Here fishy. I can usually turn them. Branches are 50 50 in the branch and the FISHES FAVOR. Pass

Where ever you spend the most time stopped. OR if you troll ? I have the bigger one at the wheel to see a fish coming close to boat / lure being trolled. What ever feels best for YOU is correct. Enjoy seeing what does not bite.

First time I fished S R with a fish Finder. Bummer trip. Warden meets me at ramp. I tell him about huge mass of floating seaweeds I was seeing. He starts laughing. Looks at me again. Laughs harder bent over.

LOCKED & gasketed rod locker. If too short for 1 piece . The boards with slots to hold 2 rod pieces side by side. With the reel on the rod. Alternate the reels . end to end. Better use of space. CLOSED CELL GASKET ONLY. Almost forgot the rod slots NEED to have CLOSED CELL gasket in them. Due to salt water bouncing rides !!!!
