Its been a long year and a half, but everytime I go out to my canal, I see very few left. About this time last year you couldnt walk 10 feet down my canal and see one of these hanging out by the edge. Since I started hunting these crazy creatures, they seemed to get very aware of my intentions. Now it becomes a battle of hide and seek with them. Yesterday while fishing with my wifes grandfather, I spotted this one hanging out by a channel pipe. At first the way it was sitting in the water it looked like a bedding bass, but then I noticed the big round side fins, and it was ON! I was fishing a Zoom lizard, so I chucked it out and reeled it in across the top of the water. As it got closer to its head, I was praying that this thing would bite and not run. As her grandfater and I waited in anticipation, it engulfed the lizard. I set the hook, as to cross the fishes eyes, and the fight was on. Since switching to 20lb YoZuri Hybrid line on my regularly used canal fishing reel, I was curious to see how it was gonna hold up, since this was a pretty decent sized fish. The fight lasted about 3 minutes, all the while he took me into rocks, lilly pads, and branches that were under water. At one point the fish charged the shore soo hard, I thought it was gonna jump out of the water and onto the bank. After getting him out of the water, and giving him a little head pounding, it weighed in at 6 lbs. The fight was good, the line held up very well, and it seems that the bass are making a comeback in my canal since we caught 6 while there. I am going to hunt down the female another day (she was swimming frantically around while I was fighting her mate). I refuse to let them over take my canal. I was here first!
