To me it feels solid and smooth despite its weight. After fishing both generations of Aldebarans the new one is definitely an improvement. These things will balance best with rods under 6'10 and in the 3 oz range.
I love this reel! I took it out again today and it was super windy. I only had one backlash casting directly into it. Then I adjusted the dial to in between 2-3 and threw it into the wind again.. No backlash. Was easily getting 100+ ft on a 3/16 oz jerk bait. The only negative and its probably just mine, is my external dial is stiff and hard to turn.
This might be the cause of your backlashes. It happened to me right after I put a drop of oil. Then I used a qtip to spread the oil around and somewhat thin the oil out and the backlashes stopped. Too much oil on the drum reduces the friction which will cause backlashes.
The dial absolutely makes a difference. If you the dial on 1 and get a backlash, turning it up to 2 usually will eliminate it. If the wind kicks up, turn it up to 5 or 6 and you should be ok, no need to touch the inside brakes.
I had mine out last weekend and caught 7 bass and a couple of crappie. The biggest bass were about 3. I was using MS-X 6'8 L BFS reel and threw mostly Pointer 65s. This combo threw the pointers very well and very far. The reel is so compact you can actually use one hand to fish jerk baits. With a fish on the line the retrieve is VERY smooth. The X ship gives you that loose drag feeling where you think your drag is off because its so smooth. The fish couldn't pull any drag so I cant comment there. The weekend before it was throwing a true 1/8 oz rapala UL minnow a really good distance, shocking really considering I own 2 other true BFS reels. I had the brakes set to 2 on and 1 on the dial and only turned the dial to 2 a couple of times when the wind kicked up. Its my new favorite reel its so fun to fish.
The met might be slightly better all around but its the weight and size of the alde that makes it special. As well as its ability to handle light baits.
Looks like the Tackle Trap has them in stock. Hi's Tacklebox had one RH HG in stock but it might be gone already. These things sold like hotcakes even at $420. Im surprised.
I think you are confusing "quality" for "features". Shimano was simply doing their normal revamp of their line up starting in 2011 with the Calcutta D and 2012 with the new Antares and so on. Some of the new features just trickled down to their mid and lower offerings.
Yeah mine is the same. I think most of the weight loss was in the handle and knobs area, so that slight buttery friction is probably just the slight resistance of the gears. I love it
Think about it, while a full lighter spool may spin for 10 seconds, and the full heavier spool 20 seconds, the lure is only going to be in the air for 3-5 seconds tops, so all that extra inertia isn't going to help the heavier spool any. That's the way I see it.
In theory maybe a heavier spool will cast farther than a lighter spool with normal weights, but nobody told my Metanium that lol. I can tell it casts a little farther than my curado I. 12 gram spool vs 16 gram spool.
