  1. There are a lot of very opinionated responses in this thread, many of them are very uneducated and are just a repeat of what someone was told or heard. I urge everyone in this thread to read this book, it will shed a lot of light on what fish see.
  2. It's digging into itself, this happens for a couple of reasons, you may have not spooled the line with enough tension, or the line is too thin.
  3. I think you better check again, I can say with absolute certainty that there is not a Revo made USDM or JDM with only three bearings. The Alt is advertised as having 6 +1 HPCR bearings, but there is not a USDM equivalent of this reel.
  4. You are using my favorite.
  5. In my opinion it just refers to a very fast retrieve, very fast is subjective.
  6. I have a few custom painted clear baby torpedo that I will sell you
  7. Several reasons for custom baits, damaged baits that need repainted, if you want to use a certain bait that does not come in a pattern that you like, some colors are not available in all depths. Some baits are no longer available in certain patterns. I can buy nice custom painted baits for 11 dollars, that is about 3 dollars more than the stock baits, if I have a blank that can be repainted it is cheaper than buying one to replace it. Fisherman are a funny group, we will pay 70,000 for a boat, 50,000 for a truck to pull it, 600 dollars for a rod and reel, 45 dollars for FC line, but a 20 dollar custom painted crankbait is out of the question......?
  8. Your owners manual should have covered braking adjustments to both the centrifugal and magnetic, as well as spool tension. You are correct with pin in = off.
  9. I find the spool tension adjustment to be of more importance than the brakes. I generally keep the spool tension very loose, I typically leave my centrifugal brakes set at two, and may increase or decrease the magnetic braking depending on wind.
  10. You may want to research this a little better, the JDM versions of the Revo do not have less bearings than the USDM version. What you may be seeing is the number of HPCR bearings that are installed in the reel. Hard to say without knowing exactly what you are looking at.
  11. I tend to go to an area that I know holds fish consistently. I will try covering that area quickly and if I fail to catch fish, my first thought is generally that the fish have moved. But, I have proven myself wrong on many occasion when I pull out the spinning reel and throw something smaller and work it much slower. I can't tell you the number of fish I have caught when a typical 3/8oz jig and trailer would not produce, but throw a Ned rig on a 1/8oz mushroom head and catch fish consistently. On tough days I remind myself to do three things, go to a place I know consistently holds fish, eliminate unproductive water by knowing where the thermocline is, slow down, slow down, and then slow down some more.
  12. He needs an effective pack leader - I seen it on TV.
  13. Jig, so versatile.
  14. Revo Elite IB - This reel has no weakness Revo MGX - Great caster, very smooth Daiwa Zillion - It's a Zillion, put a 100M spool in these and they are casting machines. Others that I like a lot, Core 100, Daiwa Sol, Daiwa Tatula
  15. What you are referring to are not magnetic brakes, they are centrifugal brake tabs. The differences between magnetic and centrifugal brakes are very important to understand as they both operate very differently and effect different parts of the cast. To answer your question, it is fine to have only one centrifugal brake set in the on position.
  16. I will be the one that goes with KVD, I think he is most dominant fisherman that the sport has ever seen, and I don't think he is done yet.
  17. Some JDM version of the Shimano reels (Scorpion) do no have this part installed. If it is noisy or clicking take it out and get rid of it.
  18. There are levels of fishing equipment that are appropriate for the newest beginner to the most hardcore enthusiast. Get in where you fit in.
  19. Reels with linear magnetic braking can be a little frustrating sometimes, as already mentioned and you know a smooth casting motion is what obtains the best results. I still have a few magnetic only reels, first generation Revo Premiers, and I have relegated them to pretty much flipping and pitching type baits because of the relatively low spool speeds. Anything I am casting for distance I prefer some variation of centrifugal or dual brakes.
  20. That is a solid Daiwa lineup, couple of 100M's, Ito's, Alphas and Pixy, got the whole gang. Nice stuff.
  21. I would stay away from the Victory, when I worked in the retail fishing market the Victory and low end Quantum reels were our highest returns.
  22. I have the older MH/F extreme, same blank I believe, 5/16 and a trailer would work well.
  23. I know there are people who still use them, but you don't hear much about the jitterbug, crazy crawler, or the bayou boogie. I also use to have good luck with the thin fin.
  24. Keep in mind your measuring the waters surface temperature and while 10 degrees or so is a significant change, it probably was far less in water with much depth. When you told your story of the fish picking your bait up after it had fluttered to the bottom the first thing that come to my mind was a Red Eye Shad fished with a Yo-Yo type retrieve. If your not familiar with this type of retrieve, it is casting the bait, letting it flutter to the bottom and then quickly ripping it up from the bottom to let it fall again. The Red Eye Shad has a pretty unique action and works well when fished in this manner.
