  1. Three tournaments down, two more left in the season. First one I came in 30th, second one I zeroed ( bad day ), this last one I came in 9th. Jumped me up to 44th in points, so two more good tournaments and I have a chance at make regional tournament.
  2. so you take an a-rig and on the 4 outside wires hand another a-rig on. so now on each one of the four a-rigs you hang a spinnerbait, a lipless crank, a jig, a swimbait, and deep diving crank.... now here it the secret, on the last wire of the first a-rig you put a crappie jig. there is where you catch the most fish. ok... the real answer is lately for me if I don't have a soft plastic on, I'm not getting a bit.
  3. Looking at the weight of the reel. That is the biggest change. I upgraded all of my old president to new ones to save weight and the amount of line they hold is also upgraded.
  4. Don't be afraid to fish your strength even if it's not "ideal" situation. if the guy is fishing fast you said you like to fish slow, then make every cast count and drag it as slowly as possible. No one says you have to trying to match cast for cast with your boater. if you like to fish shallow and he's on a deep bit then use your inner eye to imagine what the bottom might look like as far as targets to throw too.

  6. This is my first year tournament fishing as a co-angler in BFLs. I have had three tournament now. Two of them I did well and one I zeroed. The two I did well in I fished my strength the one I didn't do well I tried to chase what my boater was doing. My advice is find something you have confidence in for that day of fishing. plastics, cranking, lipless, spinnerbait... whatever it is, don't put it down... my example: first tournament I prefished and we caught a few on a jerk bait. Tournament day my boater was throwing the A-rig all day I threw my jerk bait I had success with the previous day. I caught 4, finished in 30th. Second tournament, I prefished and caught some on a chatterbait. Tournament day my boater was on a lipless pattern. I put down my chatterbait and threw the lipless all day caught small fish behind him and zeroed for the day while he got a check. Third tournament, I was on a plastic craw pattern boater was on a senko pattern. End of the day I was within one pound of his weight, I came in 9th co-angler and he came in 11th boater. so prefish if you can and find something you have confidence in and use it all day long
  7. I recieved my free Trokar hooks yesterday in the mail and they sent me 1/0 EWGs. While I was putting them in my tackle box I noticed they were very similar to my 2/0 EWG from Bass Pro. I stacked them and noted that the Trokar 1/0 hook is actually longer than then Bass Pro 2/0, both are EWG. The Bass Pro has a slightly bigger bend than Trokar but the Trokar is slight longer. Has anyone else noted a difference in hooks from manufactor to manufactor? is Bass Pro smaller than advertised or Trokar larger than advertised?
  8. I recieved mine yesterday. 1/0 EWG's and a sticker. Thanks again.
  9. I have an 1985, 17 and half foot with a 150 on the back too.. I've had mine for a year or so and once I got the motor running good it's been very reliable.
  10. looks like female bluegill to me
  11. I use braid with leaders... all spinning tackle has 8/30 all casting has 12/50... my leaders are 6-12 pound fluro or mono just depending on the application. To answer the "if you use 30lb braid and 10lb leader....with it being only as strong as the "weakest link"....aren't you actually using 10lb line? and if there is no stretch in the braid....when you hookset...aren't you putting more stress on the leader...thus reducing its actaul lb strength??? am i missing something??" I'm using the leader for two reason. First I like the idea the bass don't see mono/fluoro as well as braid. Second, if I get hung in a place you can't break the braid then you are stuck cutting the line. I'm using braid as a main line for one simple reason, line management. It's not necessary about the braid "strength" as it is the easy of which it comes off the reel, especially spinning tackle. Now the strength does come into play when I'm flipping, throwing a frog, or the A-rig all of those I tie direct to the bait.
  12. I just made a decision to go with Revo SX LH... the only ones I could find where 7.1:1 and to be honest I haven't found a disadvantage to the ratio... I can always slow down my turning speed should I want to go slower.
  13. I threw mine all weekend on a 7' Heavy and Revo. I would just go to your favorite fishing place and look around to see what you can find. the rod doesn't need to be anything special but it should be able to handle something that will end up being around 2 ounces.
  14. Just a quick update... I fished this last weekend in my first tournament. Finished 30 out of 189 with 4 fish at 10 pounds 7 ounces. Thanks for all the advice, I was lucky enough to draw an awesome boater and had NO issues at all.
  15. so it's been said a few times on this board that pflueger president is the best bang for the buck. I have 4 old style (wooden handle) president models that I love. I picked up one of the new one this week and it's is noticable lighter, haven't fished with it yet but I can't see having problems with it. In fact I plan to down size my old 40 size model to the new 35 size since it's line capacity are now just about equal and the 35 weight is about 3 ounces less. For 59.99 it should be worth considering.
  16. Thanks for all the advice... I think I'm going to run some 8 pound fluoro leader next time out and see what happens. Not sure I'm ready to drop down to 6 pound yet. by the way, when I was talking about breaking 10 pound line before, I haven't actually broken any on a hook set. It was breaking in my tackle room when I was playing around/testing it out. I was using last years Berkly 100% fluoro and snapped by hand, I also did snap it a few times last year while fishing lipless cranks getting hung up and breaking really easy. So maybe it's the line being old, faulty, or whatever versus the actually true strength of a 10 pound line.
  17. roadwarrior... that one article is what started me along the lines of wanting to 'master' the finesse jig and light line. I've bought into the idea that catching more fish increases the odds of caughting bigger fish, it's all about the odds right . So I have been reading up on finesse jig and Charlie Brewers fishing system both I feel are in the same school of thought, i.e. small baits catch more fish and don't rule out catching the bigger fish. I typically am fishing on Guntersville, so that is one reason I'm hestiate to go down to the 6 pound line. I'm just trying to figure out if anyone else has done these little test of how low you can go before it becomes an exercise in losing baits.
  18. I'm wanting to start focusing on finesse jig techniques and was hoping some of the experts on here could lend some helpful hints. I have read onlne a lot of information but a few things I'm struggling with are how light of line can you actually get away with in certain situations. Dragging a 1/4 ounce football head jig would 12 pound work or could I get away with 10? I know the standard answer of it depends on what I'm dragging it over or across. The main worry is setting the hook with 10 pound, I'm using a sweeping motion instead of the 'cross their eyes' but you can still sweep pretty hard and break 10 pound line. Another thing I'm playing with is a spinning rod (MH) vs casting rod.... any comments from someone who might have played around with this idea would be appreciated as well. I'm planning on using 1/4 ounces as my "heaviest" jig head for learning purposes. Thanks.
  19. So I signed up for the Choo Choo division ... now I'm looking for a boater if anyone else is in division I would greatly appreciate a ride.
  20. Thanks. that is good information... and it sounds like it's in the ball park of what I was planning to do. I guess the biggest gamble is the luck of getting paired with a good boater vs someone who is as green as I am to the tourneys.
  21. Thanks for that info... I was planning on bring 5 rods and my small soft tackle box (carries 5 planos). I didn't think would be too big of a foot print on the boat. Also, planned on about 40 dollars for gas and everything, that seemed like the right amount, thoughts?
  22. I'm thinking about trying to participate in the FLW's BFL series this year as a co-angler. I was curious if anyone has any experince with BFL in general and more specifically about being a co-angler. Any advice for someone who hasn't done anything like this would be appericated.
  23. It was definitely fun. I had made a long cast and let it sink down to the grass. She hit it on the first rip and fall so it was a long ways back to the boat. I didn't realize the real size until she got close and ran. Nervous few minutes letting her fight it out.

    Hello

Hello all, I've been reading the forum and website for a while now and learned a lot of good information. I'm not new to fishing but this is the first year I have taken it seriously. I bought a boat at the beginning of the year, 1985 hydrasport 18ft. I live in Northern Alabama and usually fish Guntersville and Wheeler.
  25. This last March (late March), lipless crank ripped through grass.
