  1. Ok thanks Dyer that explains why I haven't been able to find anything yet. I feel like it was the early-middle part of Feb. last year for some reason. Coak
  2. Any word yet on when the rod/reel promotions will be @basspro this year? I've checked and haven't seen any info on the website yet. Coak
  3. I personally like the older Tour Editions. I have a KVD Tour but have yet to take it out. Even though the older TE's may be a little on the heavier side I feel that they balance rods nicely and are a real work horse of a reel. I'd like to try a smoke as well. The thing to remember with higher end Quantums is that the ACS braking system does have a learning curve and not to get frustrated with it but to practice until you have it dialed in nicely. I'm not a brand snob at all, but I do feel that in this forum particularly Quantum doesn't get enough 'love'. That may be because of their lower end stuff though. I would not recommend getting any of the low end stuff. You can find some of the older Energy Pt's for around $99 if you look hard and those used to retail for $189 if I'm not mistaken. I personally would not chance it with anything below the Energy model. Just my $.02 though
  4. I have both Oakley's in the Gas Can, Oil Rig, Fuel Cell and Fives all with polarized and have recently bought a pair of Costa Permits. The reason I switched from Oakley to Costa and was willing to shell out the extra money was because the 400 and 580G lenses are Real Glass Lenses and therefore are better suited to resisting and battling scratching. I fish hard and am shore bound, so over the course of time I've managed to scratch all of my Oakley's when cutting through brush to get to some of my fishing 'spots'. As for what I've highlighted in red above, I would suggest for this reason to look at Costa frames that have the vents in the frame somewhere near the lens. There are multiple models and lens colors to choose from. Oakley as well has frames/lenses that have vents as well as some other companies. I would make sure to look for the vents no matter what brand, because you do not want to have to wipe your lenses and interrupt your time on the water. Coak
  5. I would suggest to post a couple of WTB posts in the Flea Market and you may be able to save some cash, get some decent gear and establish relationships with other forum members here. Its worth a shot and could possibly save some time/hassle with trying to locate the best deals on the web or in-store. Just my $.02 though
  6. So are these primarily an 'open' water lure or working them on the edges of vegetation? Or is there any way of altering them to make them weedless to handle vegetation?
  7. So A-Jay are we talking a 5:1 reel or will a 6:1 reel suffice. A good low ratio crank reel is the only thing missing to round out my collection and I will be picking one up soon.
  8. Hey guys I was out the other day and picked up a pair of scrounger heads on clearance, so I figured why not as I've yet to try fishing these. My question is where, when and how you all fish them. I'm thinking I would fish them like a spinnerbait or swim jig and just cast/retrieve. However, I would be foolish to just assume and therefore I wanted to consult the forum and gain some knowledge and insight on how to properly fish these and what type of structure, water clarity and other conditions to look for. Additionally while I'm thinking about it, what do you guy tip them with? Do you use something like a shad profile, or just a worm or what? Thanks, Coak
  9. I use it for just about everything except froggin.
  10. There is definitely a learning curve using the ACS braking system in the Quantum line up. Once you get one dialed in for the proper weight and what not they flat out fly, especially if you've upgraded the spool bearings and had it 'super tuned'
  11. Quantum reels are the predominate ones in my arsenal. I have an Energy PT IV, 3 Tour Editions and a KVD Tour. I also have the likes of Daiwa and BPS reels. I like my Quantums and I too feel that they do not get enough 'love' as well as some others on this forum i.e. Okuma and Pflueger. Like stated earlier there have been qc issues with some reels, but then again there will always be issues with any manufacturer. I believe personally that my reels are workhorses, able to do anything I ask of them and am able to do myself (casting properly). With that said, I'm a bargain buyer and have never bought a reel that I couldn't get for @least 40-50% off. I love my Quantums and will no doubt buy more in the future. I personally think they are on par with the likes of Shimano, Abu Garcia and Daiwa. When it boils down to it, rod and reel ownership and the opinions that follow are completely subjective and hardly if ever objective. The first sign of trouble with anything, and us fisherman are ready to say "never again will such and such company get my hard earned money".
  12. I have found that I usually put my lure or terminal tackle hooks either in the handle assembly of the reel or right in front of the spool where the bar is that runs across the top of the line guide.
  13. Jay, I would suggest searching some of the content on the website along with pulling the trigger on the Wally World spinnerbaits. The articles and videos will give you the rudimentary knowledge on how, where and what colors to fish at what times and why. Spinnerbait fishing is one of the easiest ways to catch fish if you're on the bite and know what you're doing. It's very rewarding to take what you know/learned, put it into use and see it culminate in a catch. I would also browse the 'flea market' along with some late season yard sales or clearance items in stores. P.s.--Another type of spinner that will flat out perform, and is very underrated these days by bass fisherman are Inline spinners. Just saying that's my personal .02
  14. Quantum PT Tour Edition I paid $65 for and a *** black *** I paid $50 for
  15. I live in Ohio and have never seen anything like that. Any chance that's a baby snakehead?
  16. Thanks all for the input. I have rods in both med/mod and m/f. That is the reason for my question. I will try the m/mod and see how it handles. Thanks again for the help. Coak
  17. I'm looking to start throwing more squares since I primarily fish a shallow, quick moving river. My question is what power rating and action rating would be ideal for throwing 1/4-1/2 oz. square cranks. I know for other cranks you want either a M or MH/Mod or Mod-Fast. I just don't think that would be good, but I honestly have no idea. Therefore I'm looking to you all to set me straight. Thanks, Coak
  18. Red eyes=Rock Bass
  19. I only use braid on my froggin rod. Everything else either has mono, copoly (yz-hybrid), or flouro.
  20. Thanks for the suggestions guys, I really appreciate them all. I will look into the carbonlites for sure. Thanks again, Coak
  21. Hey guys, Went out on the water today and had one of my favorite rods snap the tip off before I even got into the water!!!! I know it was my fault and no warranty. The rod itself is a Shimano Convergence 6'6" ML/F Casting rod. I am wanting some suggestions for a replacement rod. I will require three (3) things though in advance.......(1) The rod has to be a 'true' ML. By this I mean to say not like an Abu rod that usually fishes one power rating higher than what it is. (2) The rod must be under or at 6'6" with no pistol grip. My wife also uses this rod and she's 5'0"; therefore I want something she can handle relatively easily. (3) Please do not recommend to me a rod that costs more than $175-200. Two hundo is my limit. I've been looking at a 6'4" KVD something or other at basspro. There's also a company called B&R Outlaw rods that offer a 6'3" for $149. I have no knowledge of either of the rods I've looked at or any others since I've fished this rod for the last 5 seasons. I look forward to seeing suggestions and doing my homework to arrive at a favorable solution. I've checked the Flea Market and not too many ML rods come up for sale that often. As the title implies; I am also very open to buying a used rod as well. Thanks in advance, Coak
  22. All previous mentions would be good. I would also look @the Cabelas house brand mag-touch rods. I'm pretty sure they have multiple lengths and powers and are regularly on sale for around $60-70.
  23. Maybe other large freshwater game species for guys south of the border and down on the Amazon perhaps???? I know it would be overkill in my neck of the woods for sure
  24. *** ***. Great rod for the money hands down. Light, balance is crisp, and IMPO the 'power' ratings are pretty dead on. No need to worry about figuring out a method like with the Bucoo or Abu rods. I have a 6'7" M/F I use to throw topwaters and spinnerbaits and feel that this rod should def be @ the least a $125-150 rod. Hope this helps. P.S.-I'm not on the bandwagon, it's the only *** I own. I do feel the company/line does live up to the hype on this rod though. -Coak
