  1. Try a Premier, Elite or an MGX. I also like the new shimano( SVS Infinity) and Lew's( ACB) version. All 3 work dandy. Allow external adjustment like the mag braking. My Favorite is the Elite 8 with the shallow spool. Handles lighter baits very nice. If you want magnetic, Stick with Daiwa. Best at the mag's IMHO. The new Sv103's are very nice. So is the Zillian SV TW. Very versatile with that SV spool and takes many of the aftermarket Steez spool options. I wished I'd have the Revo thumbar issue so I could see what the deal is. Has to be a cure of sorts.
  2. Agreed, And Likely can get a whole combo in his price range. Not many "NEW" BC reels in the $150 range do that well with micro stuff.
  3. Love the look of the SX, But hate the mag brake system. Least favorite of the mag brakes IMHO. So I tweaked my SX to the IVCB braking like the Premier/MGX. Really inexpensive too, Just a hassle to get the parts from Pure fishing. Modding the spool was a bit of a pain, But came out good. Fish's great and much less hassle...........
  4. I love my Revo Elite8 for light stuff and my rocket for froggin heavy jigs. The Daiwa SV103XS is silky smooth and nips the Elite 8 for finesse stuff. Daiwa's Zillian SV TW a bud has is also nice, But lacks the HS gear. I've ordered and gonna swap them for some 9.0:1 from the Zillian TWS. I heard they are closing out the Zillian TWS at a few of the tackle shops. Another friend grabbed one over the holiday for just over $150.......
  5. I picked up my first a few weeks ago and flipped over it. I do miss the cast control knob/cap clinker. Or should I say missed? Stole some red accents off my 100SHA to finish off and give it some sass.
  6. Really pleased with the Denali Kovert I bought for my son. My St Croix Mojo is also a good rod for the $$.
  7. If your savy you can regear a lefty for power. Lews speed spool lefties with 6.4 or 7.1 can be regeared with abu winch, orra or BP gear sets. The new Abu gen 3's can be regeared with the toro gear sets. I geared an SX to 5.4:1 with the toro gears. I tried the 4.6:1 winch gears first, But a bit too low for my taste. I also upgraded the braking to IVCB-4
  8. Mine was on the door step this afternoon. Really nice rod! I'll drag a few lizards around tomorrow.
  9. 7'2 finesse jig is already sold out. Other still available. I ordered the 7'2" c-rig rod instead.
  10. I'm in for one of them too! Should pair up nicely with my new BB1 pro Edit: SOLD OUT!
  11. Thanks, That works. Just wanted a better clue on how it was made and where they connected the pieces together. How tight is the fit?
  12. Anybody have any info on the removable handle? Like pic's and such. Handle could be a sell to those with short rod lockers. But not finding much info out there on them.
  13. I think what he's doing is spinning the handle fast and then stopping it cold. Once stopped the inertia of the spool slips the drive pin past the pinion contact grooves. Not sure what the OP is trying to simulate and Agree with Francho. About the only thing it will accomplish is wearing out the pinion gear and drive pin.
  14. Yes, I have fished Cahill. When fishing Pike, salmon and stripers or Anytime the fish has the power to bust my tippet, I rely on the drag.
  15. Its not going to be all that much better IMHO. Look a little higher in the price range once you seem to be happy with your skills. A reel that has adjustable drag would be where I would go next.
  16. Cahills are made by South Bend.
  17. Size and color are the key. If its brown use a brown fly of similar size. It only needs to be close to get attention unless the fish are skiddish. If it lands on the water, Someone has tied a fly to match it. Just might take a bit of searching to find one.
  18. Tie on a 1/2 ounce SB to a moderate action. Then tie the same SB to a fast action. Let the SB hang and bounce the rod. That's what I mean by feel. ExFast should be stiffer or not bounce as much. No?
  19. There are 4 flies per say. Dry fly that floats to mimic bugs floating on the water. Wet fly or nymph to mimic the sub water bugs or larva. Streamers to mimic minnows or fish. and poppers to mimic frogs. Have you heard of match the hatch? Look at what's on the water and what the fish are breaking for. Try to match the fly to that bug. You can tye your own flies, But that is another takes a bit of practice to learn. Also requires some special tools. Orvis has the best selection of tools and many many flies too. If you have a local tackle shop. Often they have fly tying lessons.
  20. I started with a similar kit, But wally world wasn't around back then. Martin has been at the fly stuff a good while. 8' 5/6 weight is a good all species starter. You can bass fish with it. Just use a larger tippet/leader. Probably has a 4x, I would go up to a 6X for smaller bass. Large bass with poppers use an 8X tippet/leader. Keep us posted on how it goes.
  21. $40 isn't a big loss. Good starter kit to see if you like it. But you may find quality to suffer some. But as you improve you'll want better gear anyway. Definitely check the vids and practice before you hit the water. Tip: don't start with a real fly. use a piece of yarn to simulate a fly. Heck of a lot cheaper if you snap(whip effect from trying to over cast) one off. Fly fishing is a woot, But takes some practice. Just remember to relax. Everything needs to be smooth/fluid and no rushing the cast.
  22. I picked up a Daiwa Ballistic(7' 3") worm/jig rod at close out price from TW. Heck of a rod for under $70!! Paired it with a Lexa 100 and I'm a happy fisher!

  24. I have one in the rig as a loner. Some of my buds are brutes and are rough on tackle. Still in one piece.
