I had the same thing happen to me last year. Throwing red/white and five of diamonds spoons for pike, and the bass were hammering them. I use them on a regular basis ever since. Daredevil spoons in those two colors have been my top bass lure this year so far, plus if the bass aren't hitting, the pike and pickerel usually do.
Never caught one on a rattle trap, but I have caught them on Rapala's in shallow weeds. Also, I don't think they notice the line so much in the weeds, I guess it gets broken up.
I signed up for this on the off chance I get one of these tagged fish, but I'm not holding my breath. Lake Arthur, Presque Isle, and Emsworth Pool in Pittsburgh were tagged as well, if anyone goes to those places.
It's up by Carroltown/Northern Cambria. From Portage, I go out 422 to Belsano, then take 271 North about 4 miles, it is on the right. There will be a sign that says Duman Lake County Park or something similar. Small lake, not much bigger than Lake Rowena, if you are familiar with that. Nice place to take the hip boots and work the weedbeds and stumps.
3 or 4 inch curly tail grubs with a 1/4 or 3/8 ounce jig head, depending on current, in either black, yellow, or clear with black flake works for me. Also, for me personally, I seem to do better with chartreuse jigheads for whatever reason.
This annoys me so much. Honestly, is it so hard to take that junk with you when you leave. You carried it in, being empty it is lighter now to carry out.
I never caught a thing on plastic worms, lizards, or any of that stuff. The only plastics that ever worked for me is 3 inch curly tail grubs on a jig head.
I have a question for you Maryland guys. I hear the Potomac is really good to catch smallmouth. Would any of these areas be near Cumberland or the town Route 522 goes through(sorry I don't remember the name of the town)? Also, what kind of border agreement with West Virginia is in place, if any? Can I fish either shore with either liscense or boat, or do I need both liscenses?
Where at on the Juniata? I personally fish the river either down by Newton Hamilton or from the point to the spillway right below Raystown. There is some good smallmouth fishing here. Using small curly tail jigs in black, red, and crayfish colors works for me, along with rubber hellgramites(live works too) Another bonus to fishing the spillway is the occasional striper, lake trout or muskie washes down from the lake.
Bassfisher- If you ever see a guy in a Sea Eagle inflatable boat at Canoe Creek, it is probably me.
Grumpy- I fish there every once in a while, but not too much. Never did real well there, but I know plenty of people who do, so maybe I will give it a few more tries this summer.
I use them all the time, unless using a spinner or buzzbait where I have to tie on. I haven't noticed any difference in lure performance with them. I also do most of my fishing at night, when tying knots can be somewhat of a hassle.
Oddly enough, I caught my PB large and smallmouth while fishing for other species.
Smallmouth-5lb, 5oz 21.5 inches on a leech while walleye fishing.
Largemouth- not weighed, measured 23.5 inches on a musky sized bucktail spinner while musky fishing.
Hi all. I.m from SW PA(Between Johnstown and Altoona). I have been fishing since I was a little kid and my dad took me. Looking forward to talking to you fine folks and learning some things about bass fishing.
