  1. This is probably one of my most preferred methods, but has taken me some time as well as frustration watching my boater catch fish after fish after fish.....http://rahfish.com/how-tos/tackle-tips/going-deep-with-small-swimbaits-what-you-need-to-know/. Use as light of a weight as possible, something you will hear time and time again from the pros and it makes a huge difference. I have been able to successfully fish deep water 30 + with an 1/8 jig head, the hard part is recognizing the bottom as well as a bite;most of the time its a light tick or pull, very hard to detect when you are just starting. Forget the heavy jigs, go light as possible, start with 1/2 oz and work your way down to 3/8 if you can; my favorite is the keitech model 2 footbal jig. I guarantee you will out fish most guys if you can really get dialed in getting use to lighter weights in deep water. I know tungsten is expensive but its definitely worth it come tournament time for detecting subtle bites as well as the bottom structure. My tackle is is a light to med light, extra fast tip is essential, with 6-8 lb test for spinning gear on this technique. For deep water jigs I prefer braid, usually with a 20 lb flouro leader on a medium heavy rod with a fast tip. This technique, around ledges, rip rap, anywhere you can drag a jig has honestly doubled my catch rate.
  2. When Im not out in fishing with friends and take mt canoe out, I have to fish much slower; which has actually worked to my benefit. It forced me to fish much slower and at the same time build confidence catching fish behind people. Anchored up, I have made multiple casts, sometimes around 20 to one area before even catching one fish, usually I can pick off a few more. If you are fishing a textbook area, as mentioned a sea wall, a stump near deep water etc etc have confidence fish are there; usually they are, try different lures and angles are extremely important. If you feel you have fished an area thoroughly, let it rest and come back later.
  3. Too bad I don't have a scale. 5.3 weighed on conesus, just to help scale the other fish in pictures. pushing 6 lbs easy, location "honey hole" Easy 5 "honey hole" Caught a bunch of other 5lbers, this year was good!! Couple more 5 lb + tanks from this year.
  4. The Hudd grass minnow is killer; it looks like it does absolutely nothing in the water but they work wonders around grass!!!
  5. I recently have had great success with white, particularly something with a silver or gold flake. The areas I am fishing have a lot of shad; a white senko has been killer, as well as small swim bait on an 1/8 jig head, fished very slowly on the bottom.
  6. Hopefully I have a fish to add to the list by Saturday! Definitely have confidence with a ChatterBait in 40 degree temp, I only seem to catch them when I'm ripping it fast with a slight pause; works for ponds at least.
  7. Don't quote me on this but I remember seeing and reading on more than one occasion; with the sharpie you beak up the line, you do not color the entire portion of the line, so sharpie, braid sharpie, braid or however you want to do it. I don't remember the length.
  8. Hmmm.. Not sure maybe not I don't think they updated the contact on fcs page.. Message me it please. Trying to do this on my phone right ot working well.
  9. Well show me then, how about Thursday; biggest fish gets a free dinner.
  10. Thanks, I was more worried about the line breaking; believe me if I had time to grab the line I would, as soon as pulled her up or tried to pull her up on shore to go and grab it a few shake and shimmy's and she was off. J. F if I could flip this fish over I would, Im not exaggerating I think this fish is over 6! If I were to continue to pull her up more, not worrying about the line I would have probably been able to land the fish.. The other issue is I am about 9-10 ft from shore bc Im casting into thin water so thats a lot of line to grab and hold onto. As for the hook, Northstar makes excellent jigs and the hooks are super sharp.
  11. Gear; Irod Gen II Freds Magic stick (love this rod), lews tourney pro, and 20lb sunline flourocarbon; fishing northshtar 1/2 pitch and swim, maybe the name is wrong but close enough. I found this hog, has to be 6 pounds;flipped into a corner and watched my line move away, I knew I had a fish on and felt I made a solid hook set, but I wouldn't say swinging for the fences. As soon as the fish was on shore I tried to keep tension on the line and walk down and the fish just flopped around and flew off, I was extremely surprised how active this huge fish was with the water temps probably still in the 40's; then realizing my drag was not really locked down enough to pull a fish like this up shore.. I go back to the same area an start flipping, make sure my drag is set tighter; Im pitching into reeds, after a warm rain the water is high and fish moved up into cover in about 1 ft- with a 3-4 ft drop off nearby. The bite is soft, you cant even feel it, missed a 3 thinking I was caught on a reed, made the hook set too late; about 20 casts later Im hooked into this monster again, I felt a small tap tap, again I think I make a good hook set, this fish was in about 2 ft of water or less, Im probably 6 feet back off shore and I try to pull the fish over the reeds and onto shore; this thing is so big and there was a small incline I just could not get him up, reason being lacking confidence in my line!!! Normally I would be fishing 65 sunline braid, but I switched line and order a faster reel for my frog rod. So the main question is can you flip a 5 plus fish in a boat or on shore with 20 lb flour with the drag locked or almost nearly locked; and how should I have my drag set?? Im using a Palomar knot. I know this fish will be in the same spot, Im going back today; this will be the third day in a row!!
  12. People must not fish quality baits these days, if you think these are not durable then you are crazy, or you are not rigging them properly! I think they have okay action, if you like a slow retrieve then I don't think this is the bait for you, don't even think of fishing in cold water; if you bend the fins or if they incur any deformities they run like crap, but that can easily be fixed with boiling water. I purchased a bunch on pre order, I will probably never fish them as soon as I threw a keitech on I just cannot go back to the sick fish. Will these catch fish, of course but I think there are a number of choices that will out perform these.
  13. Mojo Rig, experimented for the first time with it; did the job!
