  1. My arms are solid as a rock! Ha. Not true but I swear I never had to set the hook with other cranking rods..just put a bit of pressure with a short sweep and they're on......This rod won't allow it.
  2. That H3 Titanium American Rodsmiths was a great cranking rod, really nice. Now it's 214 retail...sweet! Ha. Not gonna happen for that price....I think that Powell will make it look silly
  3. I don't like to blame gear either. I like the rod and it's definitely nice for the money but as you said, probably not the best rod for deep diving cranks. As far as traps in grass, well that ain't happening around here very often. Any opinion on Powell 753 Glass or Powell Max Deep? I think I'm leaning toward the Deep Composite....
  4. In my opinion both Dicks and Gander are equally depressing.....I wish Sportsmans Warehouse would have stayed in VA.....We miss it !
  5. Me and my fishing partner and long time friend went out last night for a few hours of mainly cranking. I used to use an American Rodsmiths Titanium Cranking rod in 7'6 and had a good hook up ratio with stock DD22's, no hook upgrades..... Last night I lost two fish that normally would not come unbuttoned in my experience so I'm thinking that rod is to blame... It's the Bass Pro Crankin stick in 7'6MH, XF...... The difference is this rod has a lot less flex than I am used to so I'm thinking it pulled the bait away from the fish..... Am I far off here? I like the rod a lot but apparently I don't know how to fish cranks with it. What can I do to prevent lost fish with this XF, MH cranking rod? I'm getting ready to buy that Powell Max Deep cranking rod and be done with it...or the Powell Max Glass 753..... May sell BPS rod...
  6. Hey guys, I'm going with all Shimano reels this year and I've been slowly building my collection. I have Curados and Citicas and I like them quite a bit. I have to ask a question of you guys that are in the know and here it is below..... I'd like to pick up a Chronarch or Scorpion but come on..even used they are way up there in price...How in the world can there be so much difference in money on the Curado compared to the Scorpion, Chronarch, Core and the other ridiculously priced models they have.....I saw one for $600 the other day..REALLY? I mean really, what in the world can they be putting in these other reels that make them hundreds of dollars better than the Curado???! Are they really THAT much better and how? Anyway, this has always puzzled me. Can someone shed some light here please.
  7. A lot of people like to knock these rods for some reason but I had the Spinnerbait/Worm rod and I thought it was great. I love the amount of tip it had. I only sold it because I was out of work and outta cash. The best deal I've seen on these rods is on Amazon by far. Reds Gear is the seller and he seems to have prices far below anyone else. I'm not certain about the Micro guide models but I hear nothing but good things about these guides in general.
  8. I have the Mattlures MH rod as well and I throw Mattlures baby bass and Huddleston 6" trout with mine. No problems! You may also look at the Okuma Guide Series in 7'6 or 7'11 MH. I had the 7'11 and it was a great rod. Pretty too. You can get one of these for around $109. It's a great rod at a great price. You can also get that Quantum Swimbait rod pretty cheap if you can still find it.
  9. I use a Shimano Citica 200DSV , 6.2:1 gear ratio and it does a great job.
  10. Is there a specific paint that I should pick up to custom paint a crankbait? Any special process here?
  11. It is hard to argue with, that XPS is a great rod for spinnerbaits. I got it for free but the guy who had it before me didn't take excellent care of it to say the least.....I may just stick with it or buy another one. Is yours the Green rod or the black XPS? How is the Big Bear in comparison to the Bass Pro in terms of stiffness? About the same? They aren't cheap, I noticed that.....
  12. Okay guys, I want another spinnerbait rod. My question is in regard to stiffness. I've had some rods that were just too stiff for this technique but a couple that haven't.... The Skeet Reese Spinnerbait worm had the kind of bend that I liked, the GLoomis 6'3 Spinnerbait rod did, etc. Now I'm using a 7' MH XPS Extreme rod from Bass Pro. This rod has a lot of flex but is rated for 3/8-1 1/2 oz lures and it's been perfect for accuracy even with lighter spinnerbaits........I really like the rod but I want a nicer rod that is technique specific and at least 6' 10. I don't want to spend more than $120-$130 new or used..... Any suggestions on a rod that has that kind of flex that will allow me to cast lighter to heavy spinnerbaits and buzzbaits? I may spend more but I doubt it. I don't want what I had before and I don't want a stiff rod....
  13. Thanks for your input folks, I appreciate it.
  14. Thanks for your input, I appreciate it!
  15. Is it that big of a deal to have a 7.1:1 ratio when throwing the jig n' pig and t-rigged worm? I understand that it picks up line faster but I've never used a reel with 7.1 for this type of fishing..... I'm planning to use one of my Citica 200's which are 6.2:1..... Won't this do the trick?
  16. They are a blast to catch for sure....when I lived in NC the guys in my bass club called me "the blackfish king"...it was funny but true. I had a hard time with tidal bass but seemed to have a knack for catching numbers of bowfin....fun but no help in the club tourneys I'm afraid!
  17. I'm with you and everyone else, some things just don't work me either. I hate the drop shot...hate it ! It doesn't work for me. Neither do flukes....can't stand em'. I do love the spinnerbait though! I will say I've had more success on a War Eagle Spinnerbait than any other spinnerbait I've ever tried. I think it's the wire that's used with this bait that gives it more vibration. If you dare, give War Eagle a try ! if you haven't already. I'd say don't give up on the blade but I gave up on drop shots and flukes and all finesse fishing so who am I to talk! HA. Good luck !
  18. TW is pretty awesome. I like em' !
  19. Good to know. I have hear that Powell has an excellent warranty and top rate service. As a matter of fact, I don't think I've ever heard a bad word said about them. That goes a long way these days for sure. I appreciate the advice.
  20. Thanks, I checked it out. I really like those Powell Rods from what I've seen and heard. I forgot to mention one thing about my post.....Both of these are from individual sellers and the Kistler I can get for $118 and the Powell for $143 Both seem like good deals....I'm leaning toward the Kistler because it's a bit shorter....
  21. I'm considering a rod for Jigs and Texas Rigs....they're both rated for 1/4- 1 1/2 oz baits and both MH Powell Max 7'6 or Kistler Argon 7'1 I'm using a Citica 200DSV for now but may get a Curado 200DHSV to go with it. My question is one will be the better rod for medium light to heavy texas rigs ? I really need this rod to double as a worm/jig rod.....
  22. You won't have any problems with rods shipped to you or shipping rods to other people. Don't be afraid of cardboard tubes, they are plenty sturdy. Always send it insured to recover the value in the event that something actually goes wrong. PVC tubes are great but they're too costly unless you have someone that gives them to you for free. Lowes charges around 10....add the actual cost of shipping to this and you've lost money on the deal. Hang on to your tube in case you need to return a rod in the future or if you should sell one to someone. Believe me, there will come a time when you need it! I have six in the garage right now and I'm happy to have them. Just got a rod from Bass Pro and it's a darn nice crankbait rod for the money! I love it. I paired it with a Curado 200DPV and it's sweet. Be ready to pay premium shipping when ordering from BPS. Just no way around it.
  23. I'm planning to buy one of two cranking rods.... Should I go with the Powell 753 Glass Cranking rod in 7'5 or the Powell Deep Cranking Composite rod in 7'11 I was thinking the 753 Glass would be a better all around cranking rod and easier to handle yet long enough to cast deep cranks a mile........ I love the look of the 7'11 but I'm wondering how easy it will be to handle compared to the 753...... Any help will be appreciated!
  24. Awesome guys, thanks a lot! No wonder!! I will adjust it and see how it goes!
  25. I have a Citica 200 DSV I use for my swimbaits on a 7'7 MH Mattlures rod and it casts a mile with no problems. ( 17lb Spiderwire EZ Mono) I have another Citica 200DSV on my 7' MH XPS rod and the line flies off the spool before I can catch it...I'm throwing ligher baits with this granted ( less than an ounce, some 1/4 ....) but I'm not getting why the line just comes off in a big, loose, fast clump and then , of course, backlashes..... Now, the line I put on is 10lb Stren which I never use but I had to get it on and go in an hurry....... I pushed all of the brakes in? Is this correct. The spool tension is barely loose enough for the bait to drop freely..... Help!
