  1. My big loss was when I was in Kona a couple of years ago Marlin fishing with the old man. We had two full days booked and the first day we caught 5 marlin which is an outstanding day for even Kona standards. They were all males and around 150lbs. We had a blast and were hoping for a big one on the second day to top off the trip. That was are whole goal of the trip. We had caught the small ones the previous year and decided to come back to go after a big one. An ameatur photograher heard about our excellent numbers day and decided to tag along the next day. We were pumped up to start the second day and we were happy we didn't have to rely on our point and shoot cameras. The second day started off with my Dad getting a 225lb right off the bat. The bite slowed after that fish and that feeling that one would hit any second had diminished. Around 2 that afternoon I was laying down on the sofa taking a nap. I was awoken by a screaming reel and three guys yelling FISH ON!!! I went from sound asleep to wide awake in about 2 seconds. I got strapped in the chair and was ready to battle it out. The fish kept taking line and about 75-100 yards out she decided to come up and show herself. When she made that first jump it looked like she made a whole in the ocean. It was a site to see. Everyone was pumped after seeing what we had hooked into. She made a 2nd and a 3rd jump and wowed us all again. Then she came up to the top and danced across the water with her tail for what seemed to be about 5-6 seconds before laying herself back down into the water. A few seconds later I don't feel anything so I start cranking as fast as I can hoping she is just running back towards us. I crank and crank and crank until finally the deck hand says she got off. The fish we came for was only bill rapped and once she turned herself in the right direction she was free. I was sick to my stomach for the rest of the trip and think about it all the time to this day. The captain estimated her to be around 500lbs. A 500lb fish in Kona is common but it would of been a very special catch to me. Here is a picture of her dancing on top of the water seconds before getting away.
  2. I ordered mine during lunch on the 1st. I received my reel today and the shipping label said it shipped on the 7th.
  3. I'm glad I just picked up a Curado. I'm not liking the white look on these new reels. They just look really cheap to me. I will be all over the new Power Pro though.
  4. I bet thats true. I had problems placing an order online with them because the site kept freezing in the checkout. I called them and the guy said there was about a 20 minute wait to place an order over the phone. He said the phone was blowing up at a very high level and every call was for the Curado.
  5. Your Welcome and Im glad I could help. Ive asked a lot of questions here and thought it would be a good way to give something back.
  6. Happy 4th of July. I just thought I would share this with everyone. There was no way I could pass this deal up! http://www.americanlegacyfishing.com/shimano-curado-cu50e-casting-fishing-reel.html
  7. Do Bass Tackle Depot and Tackle Warehouse normally do sales on the 4th like they did on Memorial Day? I'm looking to buy the old man a nice rod and any extra savings would help. Thanks.
  8. What methods are working best for you guys on the 4"? I only had a chance for a few minutes in the daylight to play around with it. Other than that I have just done a slow and steady retrieve with an occasional pause at night. Its one loud lure thats for sure. I think the hooks need to be replaced on these when you get one in. One of my hooks bent on a fish no bigger then 2.5.
  9. From what I have read from other websites people are saying to stick with the 4". I just got my first 4" in Jet Black last week. I fished it slow this weekend and its action is like a wake bait with a buzzbait sound to it. I usually fish a black buzzbait or jitterbug at night. What I like the most about this bait over those 2 is you can chunk this thing a mile and cover more area. What I dislike about this bait is worrying about nailing a neighbors dock at 1am and waking them up.
  10. I had the same problem with the sinking U2. Mine ripped off after my first fish.
  11. Tex Rig, Gamo EWG 5/0, 50lb Power Pro, Watermelon Seed I put a hurting on those bass with this setup this spring thanks to the advice from others from here.
  12. The customer service is excellent. I snapped a rod and got a new one in quick for 50 bucks. The M is closer to every one elses MH. They are under rated rods.
  13. Both of them. The first one is just in an earlier stage.
  14. I was throwing a buzzbait on my 2 month old Pflueger Patriarch baitcaster yesterday and heard an alarming noise. I like to engage my reel right as the buzzbait hits the water to keep in on the surface from the time it hits the water. As I engaged the reel I heard a loud grinding noise. I went ahead and threw it a couple of more times and got the same noise on the last cast. I put the reel up and grabbed my Citica to continue fishing the buzzbait. I haven't oiled the Pflueger or done anything to it out of the box yet because it was basically brand new. My worry is a gear might be stripped out or something. Any ideas of what exactly to look for if I open it up? Also what brand/type of lubricant if any should I apply to the gears?
  15. This was the first year I have fished this bait. I haven't had any luck during the day but I have been pleasantly surprised at the night time fishing success I have had with it. Now when I go out at night the first thing I think is "use the buzzbait, jitterbug, or egg". Its been that good for me.
  16. Those are called HIV Bass. Be sure you don't have any open wounds on you before sticking anything in its mouth. After handling one if you experience headaches, facial flushing, upset stomach, or loss of vision, consult your local doctor right away!
  17. I wouldn't recommend it on the 8 ft. My 55lb trolling motor seems to push it when I go straight to the highest gear.
  18. The back half of plastic ripped off mine after the first 3lb bass. I wasn't too happy.
  19. So what would you say is the closest in the Dobyns to a St Croix M? St Croix rods are underrated. There M is like a MH to most other brands.
  20. I have the 7' MF Avid not the MH. I was looking for comparable power, so the 703 should do.
  21. I went ahead and ordered the Champion. I cant wait to test it out.
  22. Copied and pasted from BTD Sale Price: $191.99 You Save: $48.00 (20 %) Is someone else selling them for 129?
  23. I just got the Avid but am thinking about possibly upgrading with these memorial day sales and selling my Avid. This rod would be paired with a Pflueger Patriarch on Power Pro 50lb braid . I want to use this exclusively for 1/8oz Texas rigged plastics, mainly Brush Hogs. Ive never used a Dobyns or a split grip but have heard great things about them from different forums. My main concern is sensitivity. Is the Dobyns 703c a more sensitive rod than the Avid? BTD has the Dobyns for $192 shipped.
