IMHO, this is how I have seen the serious crappie fisherman do it. They will always have several rods set up in rod holders on their boat with them set at various depths. The one thing that gets me though is how they manage not to get tangled. Me, I am more of a hands on kind of guy when it comes to fishing.
I think they call that spider rigging????
If you are fishing out of a boat I would use a heavy jig like 3/4 ounce or more to punch through the weeds to get down to the bottom. If your fishing off of the bank, I would use a lighter weight like a 1/4 ounce or a 1/8 ounce and swim it back across the tops of the weeds.
Abu's service is great. A couple of years ago I broke a split ring on a blackmax 3600 baitcaster. When I called the service dept. they asked me if that was all I needed. When I told them yes, they said they would put it in the mail that afternoon at no charge.
Don't waste your time on a product that may or may not work. You don't want to get out on the water and find out your new BPS reel is a dud. Buy the Shimano.
I fish 75% of the time from the bank. I like to use soft t-rigged plastics that I can pull through the brush without hanging up. Since I can't go to the fish, I like heavy tackle that I can will bring that bass to me. I also will use 1/4 to 1/8 ouce jigs, topwaters, and shallow running crankbaits.
