  1. my brother has taken an interest in fishing so i bought a decent set up. i cant decide what line to use for him. its between powerpro and trilene xl. trilene is much cheaper so if he hates fishing i wont lose to much money, but if he does like his spirit might be killed by a lost fish or a huge birdnest. on the otherhand braid handles better, makes up for bad hooksets, doesn't birdnest and sure wont break on anything he catches, but if he hates it ill lose a lot of money. im thinking ill go with braid but i want an outside oppinion. also how chould i start him off. theres tons of big rock bass around my dock but a bass will be more fun to catch so which fish should i start him on
  2. during my thinking time (fishing) i often come up with fishing ideas. i don't remember most of them but one i came up with seemed to good to forget. my idea is a tube with ribs like the yum vibra king but the great part is in the tentacles. each tentacle is shaped like a mini senko giving the bait a tail action no fish can resist. i was wondering what anyone thought of my idea.
  3. i remember seeing some thing on a cabelas fly fishing catalog exactly for that purpose but i don't remember the name.
  4. my dad only uses live or cut bait to fish so i self taught myslef here on BR for over 2 years. anything i knew about artificials came from getting lucky or guessing before that.
  5. i was wondering what everyones favorite night time lure is. mine are colorado bladed spinnerbaits and lipless cranks.
  6. all i really wanted to know was have the fish been accostumed to stickbaits or is it something else. i don't use stickbaits much anymore but man anglers around the lake do. my primary baits are flukes, cranks, lipless cranks, brush hogs, trick worms, strike king spinnerbaits and tubes. most of the stickbaits i have are from last year
  7. you use worm hooks on a crankbait (referring to gammie)
  8. the first bass i ever caught on an artificial when i was 5 was a red with white striped 3/4 oz daredevle.
  9. x2 for trilene 100% professional grade fluoro
  10. wow i guess i was a bit closed minded before about walleye. i thought they were only caught on brightly colored grubs, deep divers, vertical jigs and spinner rigs. there is many walleye in my lake going up to over 12 lbs, so i guess when the next cold front hits and the bass aren't biting ill try targeting walleye
  11. wow. WTG! that fish is about the same size as my PB and all i fish for is northern strain here in NY, other than the one time i get to fish in florida every year on vacation.i was wondering, was that a spawning female? also heres a little secret i found. as you found out bass are very jealous fish and don't like seeing another fish eat. the secret is if you have an old rapala, take the hooks off but not the split rings and tie you line to the rapala. then attach a 12"-18" leader to the back split ring and tie on you swimbait to that leader. the bass will think that its chasing down the rapala and will attack it. although the logic may seem strange it does work very well.
  12. x2 on the stock rapala's hooks being good, but i thing that the mustads or owners or even gammies are stronger. the only bait i don't ever change the trebles on is my rattle trap. these are some of the best hooks you will find stock on a crank. also try the sureset hooks that rapala puts on some of their lures because the one part that sticks out is thicker and stronger than the rest of the hook.
  13. well they havent been my primary bait they've been my primary sight fishing bait but i switched over to a different sight fishing bait last year
  14. i really feel embarassed saying this, but stickbaits just don't work for me anymore. im not blaming my confidence because i always had confidence in them. i remember about 8 years ago when my uncle Darrell brought some senkos down to my lake for the first time. i know all the fisherman around the lake (its pretty small) and i knew that none of them had used a senko before. the next few weeks it shot off at the lake. ever since then people (including me) have been pounding it with em. this year though everyones confused. no one could catch large fish with them in prespawn or when sight fishing. this has been happening for weeks and people are blaming the fish for not biting. i realize that stickbaits are supposed to be go to baits when nothing works, but its not working. I think fishing pressure has finally taken hold of the lake because while everyone refuses to switch to other lures im catching them like crazy on spinnerbaits, lipless cranks, brush hogs, trick worms, flukes and banjo minnows. I was always told that since a senko had no real recognizable characteristics fish couldn't become used to it. i tried them for two weeks texas rigged and wacky rigged but only have caught a few dinks. has this ever happened to your lake and is this just a common phase that goes away after a few weeks? i have hundreds of yum dingers, 5 bags of senkos and some bps stikos and im afraid i wont be able to catch anything on them anymore
  15. nice story clayton.us new york anglers are lucky to have so many big game fish around. Also, the strange thing about my lake is that walleye can't spawn in my lake. they are stocked every year because their isn't ideal spawning habit for them(according to the DEC). the strange thing was that this walleye was stuffed, AND I MEAN STUFFED. it didn't feel like fat or muscle but i always practice C.P.R. (catch, photograph, release) so i wasn't gonna blindly cut this fish open to prove the DEC wrong. but the eyes on them take up nearly half of their head so how i caught it on colored 20 lb. monofilament is still a mystery.
  16. i would probably go with a strike king spinnerbait or a rat-l-trap because they can be fished in a variety of conditions. plus i can use braided line with them so ill be less likely to break off
  17. there is a real trilene knot. you insert the line through the eyelet then push it back through leaving a 1 inch long oval on the other side of the hook. then twist the tag end around the main line 5 times, insert the tag end through the loop you made earlier and then put the tag end through the new circle you just made in the line. tighten by pulling the hook and tag end. when using fluoro make sure that the knot is tied right because it can slip eaily if tied wrong.
  18. at bps they have tip repair kits. one of them you just twist the tip on and your set to go, but its more of a temporary fix. the other one you just place on top the heat with a lighter and it supposedly last longer than the twist on. i wouldn't reccomend trying to fix it yourself, because ive tried that before with rods and it didn't turn out well.
  19. what type and size hook was it?
  20. the strangest thing happened at my lake. i had my favorite crankin rod with a silver and blue rattle trap on 20 lb. test mono. i was fishing shallow in light weeds when i hooked into what i thought was a small pike. when i brought it in i was surprised to find a 6lb. walleye. ive fished rattle traps for years and have never caught a walleye on one before. since walleye are very line wary i didn't know how i could get it on 20lb test. plus the location was completely wrong for a walleye. in my lake at this time of year they're usually down deep in rocky areas. something didn't seem right about catching it like this. i know i didn't snag it. has this ever happened and do you know why it was so shallow?
  21. try using your dremel to cut open one good red eye and one broken one. compare the insides for anything strange. just another idea
