1. How do you know you casted further if you don't have another rod to compare to?
The moderate action gives a better load on the rod when throwing baits, it doesn't hurt it.
2. Cranking on the bottom sends off a lot of feedback even if you're using lifeless rod.
3. Snap casting, whipping the bait with the rod in the beginning of the cast can create overrun, it's a sign you aren't using the right combination. You can get around it if you 'fan cast' but when you do that you are being gentile so you can get something out of wrong match up. A good example is when I throw 1/8oz jig/grub on a heavy rod, it is not easy but is manageable.
