I can't remember how the equation works so hopefully someone here will know.
Heres the situation in my pond(my girlfriends family pond).
I've been fishing the place for going on 2 years now, and have not once caught a largemouth out of it that exceeded 2 pounds or 17 inches in length. That would make me think it was overpopulated with bass but the catches are also very few and far between. A good day(more than 3 hours) will MAYBE net you 5 bass...which 3 probably won't even be a legal size. This pond has been fished with everything from worms to minnows to all the typical artificial lures and still, not much results. Girlfriends father will occasionally catch one or two bass while fishing as well.
On the flipside..bluegill fishing will result in very few bluegill catches but the ones that are caught are about hand sized and very healthy looking. Normally, when bluegill fishing in a pond, you can get quite a few hits on your worm, but I received..I think it was 5 or 6 "hits" in a two hour span yesterday fishing all different parts of the pond. You also don't see any swimming near the bank parts you can get to. So, nice sized bluegill that ARE caught, but very few are caught.
there are no large predator fish in the water, but there are crappie...my girlfriends dad supposedly caught 17 crappie about a week ago and probably fished for about an hour or two I would guess.
so the players
Small bass, few bass
Good sized bluegill, few bluegill caught.
Crappie caught in numbers, I would guess they were 7-9 inches if they are any like I've always caught there.
whats your take on the health of the fish? Too few bass to eat the bluegill who in turn grow too big for the bass to eat? Too many bass(which I just can't believe with how few are caught) and not enough food? Crappie eating both fishes fry and theres not much population left?
