The dual braking on this reel makes it a good choice for the experienced angler or newbie IMHO. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the reels mentioned. Too many guys try to learn on the cheapest reel they can find, and that makes learning a lot more challenging. Good luck.
I'd ask him to take me deep water jig fishing on Table Rock lake. 8-)If that wasn't an option I would ask for a primer on jig fishing. He is the master...
It will be fun to see her drive with the big boys. It sure won't hurt Nascars ratings, and will likely draw sponsor money from companies who haven't been a part of Nascar before. I like her...and she's a lot purtier than Jimmy Johnson. ;D
I don't fish tourneys, but I rarely get much sleep before a fishing trip. It doesn't matter how well prepared I am, I can't stop the voices in my head... ;D The exceptions are the local lakes that I know well and expectations are not that high.
Either one of those days would be a GREAT day. If forced to choose I would take day two. One monster equals many, many smaller fish IMHO.
The answer to numbers versus size for me is it depends. Most of the time if I'm fishing with someone I would pick numbers. When I'm alone I usually focus on size. Most of my bigger fish this past year came on days I was fishing alone. In my experience most folks don't want to spend a lot of time looking for the big bite.
Nice job. The first of many. 8-)
As far as weight...? It is hard to tell from a picture. I have seen fish smaller that were said to weigh 5+. Since you did not use a scale, you have a lot more...flexibility. ;D
I thought when we talked about the two that it was interesting that the 30 size was not the same across the board. I guess someone smarter than us make these decisions? :
I would take a look at the Lowrance HDS units. I have the 5 (no si or down scan) on my console and 5X on the bow, and have been happy with both. A 7 with si and down scan, and a 5 on the bow would be an awesome set-up IMHO. Good luck and enjoy the new boat. 8-)
The higher strength braid has a large enough diameter to keep it from digging into the spool and causing other problems. The leader is less visible in clear water, and is more abrasion resistant.
I only have experience with the PQ. That would be my choice for the reel. The 6.4:1 (26 IPT) is a fine all round choice. The High speed is 29 IPT and would work well also.
I agree with crankenstein and would add a MF or MXF rod for jerkbaits, light jigs/worms, poppers, etc.
