  1. Line watching when bladebait fishing is very important. Not sure how many fish I have caught on it setting the hook after seeing the line jump and never feeling a thing.
  2. I have the HB 798 SI unit with a 5" screen. Even though it is a smaller screen, you can still see a lot of stuff. I certainly would not give it up for a larger screen without SI.
  3. Many years ago prefishing for a Federation tournament on Lake George. 30 miles from the launch. Landed a small 13" whipper snapper smallie on a Rattlin' Rogue. While unhooking it slipped out of my hand and trebles landed in my inner thigh. Luckily the fish came off just as the hook lodged in my leg. Hook was straight in and up to the bend. Had to grab it with needlenose and turn it back outwards and poke it back through the skin. That was no where near the easy task I thought it was going to be. Skin is VERY tough. Realizing how far I was from the launch I knew I had to pop out out no matter what. Finally did, clipped the barb and it came right out.
  4. And I have always heard and read that, but haven't really experienced it. I liked braid so much on the crank I switched my Pop-R and spook fishing to straight braid a couple years ago as well. I'm probably using a soft enough rod to still allow for shock absorption. And all this is coming from a guy that doesn't use/like braid all that much. All my bottom bouncing stuff is strictly heavy flouro.
  5. Since I put straight braid on my cranking rod a few years ago, I'd probably never go back to any other type of line for deep cranking. I can thank the resident farmer here for that one. I use a 7' MHM with 30 lb. Spiderwire Invsi Braid. I know I can go a little lighter in the line, but so far the 30 has been working good for me. Do I feel like I'm going to have a problem using braid with a treble hooked lure? Not one bit. Sounds like you have the rod narrowed down, use a line that will transmit the data you want back to you.
  6. 17 3/4" 19 3/4 + 19 1/4" + 19" + 17 3/4" = 75 3/4"
  7. After reading that I thought you might live closer to Buffalo. lol
  8. Improved clinch for all baits and all lines, 6 wraps. Never had a problem with braid slipping.
  9. One of the first things I do when the boat gets cleaned out is get stuff as dry as possible as quick as possible. Gear and tackle takes a beating during the late season getting wet/damp and when it is steady in the 20's through the 40's, not much drying is happening.
  10. I participate in that every month. I shave every three weeks whether I need to or not.
  11. d**n you! So did I. lol
  12. I'll try jumping in. 19 3/4" Smallie 19" Largie
  13. Time for the blade bait, a little deeper than you last left them.
  14. Kinda glad I don't have one of those on my route. lol I do deliver to a cow mailbox, with its rear end facing the road. You pull on its tail to open the door. Someday I'll take a picture of it.
  15. I've tried a few over the years and keep going back to plain old brown jersey gloves. $10 for a dozen pairs. I usually start a day with 3 or 4 pairs in my various pockets, and if it's wet out I change as needed although they still maintain some sort of warmth even when fairly wet. I can thumb a baitcaster, cast a spinning reel and even tie knots without taking them off.
  16. So it really doesn't affect the levels downstream of the power plants? How long does it take to fill the reservoir?
  17. So where does that water go?
  18. How do they suck the lower river down? Do they start filling the holding reservoir? That isn't huge so it can't take that long with the volume of water heading down the river. I just don't understand where the water goes, either it goes over the falls or through the power plants, but it's got to go somewhere and it all ends up in the lower river.
  19. A few ways.......... • They make a sleeve that fits over the weed guard that protects from the heat • There is a nylon insert/pin that fits into the weed guard hole then removed after painting. Guard epoxied in after that. • Paint head without guard then carefully drill out hole and epoxy in the guard
  20. It muddies up the water on the eastern shore of Lake Erie, which in turn flows down the river.
  21. I have caught open water fish with surface temps down to 35º or so. One day on Conesus Lake several years ago, the air temp was 19º and the water was very calm and around 35º. We were fishing in 30+ feet of water, and before we knew it ice was forming around the boat. It grew quickly to between a 1/8" and a 1/4" before a breeze picked up and broke it up. We caught a bunch of fish that day. Below is a picture of my tube jig sitting on the ice in 30 feet of water. Another day, on the same lake, four of us headed out for a day of fishing a few days before Christmas. We got a bit of snow overnight. lol If I remember correctly each of us caught a limit of smallmouth that day. When we came back in at the end of the day, there was only one set of tracks at the launch, and they were ours from we launched in the morning. It's never too late in the year to catch fish.
  22. I use cheapo OmniFlex in 15 pound from Walmart. 500 yards for like $1.99. It just occupies space like Marty says, so I use a larger diameter to fill it up quicker. How much depends on the technique the rod is for. Flipping and pitching gets more backing and only 30-40 yards of flouro. Something I make long casts with gets less backing and more flouro.
  23. Can also check this website to see the clarity coming out of the river, as long as there is clear skies. http://coastwatch.glerl.noaa.gov/modis/modis.php?region=o&page=1 Looked pretty dirty today too.
