  1. They really don't look as huge as I thought they would. I still can't think of a use for them in our lakes but I'm sure they'll catch fish well at certain places.
  2. What do you feel the odds really are that a bait and shakyhead fall perfectly straight down and land just right on the bottom to stand up and down like they do in a perfect environment they're usually tested in? I can't imagine even a head designed to stand up on the bottom ever comes to rest perfectly like they do in aquariums where they're often demonstrated. I pour my own shakyheads that have a round head so I'm sure they never stand up but it's never been something I've worried about with them. Shakyheads with a trick worm or T mac worm are one my favorite baits to use and are one of my top producers each year even though they don't stand up. I'd say if you get a bait to stand at a 30-45 degree angle then you're doing pretty good. I'd feel like a football shakyhead would be the most consistent at keeping a bait sitting up at an angle without falling over.
  3. Like with any crime, the tools used to break the law are evidence if he decides to go to court to fight it. I don't know if he can get his stuff back or not but I enjoyed watching it go down. It's kind of like when someone blows by you on the highway then you see them pulled over a little ways down the road, real world justice at it's finest.
  4. I can't watch it, I get annoyed for all the people having to deal with their antics. Maybe I'm just a stick in the mud but I just can't get into that show.
  5. I actually watch a guy get busted for netting crappie today. They're trapped in what's left of the outlet at the bottom of a dam at a local lake and some of them are starting to die from lack of oxygen I suppose. He was walking around netting the ones struggling by the bank and putting them in a bucket while several people, including myself, watched him doing it. He carried the bucket back to his car and then came back down the bank to fish. Apparently someone called on him and there's a warden outpost 1/2 mile down the road and 2 trucks pulled up shortly after he started fishing. He'd left his net and bucket leaning against his car so once they found out who the car belonged to he was done. He lost his net, fish, bucket, tackle box, and rod along with getting a ticket. He was arguing that the fish were dying anyways so what does it matter? FYI, arguing with a LEO will never EVER help your case He stomped off after he figured out his argument wasn't changing the warden's mind and nobody was going to stick up for him. I caught a bunch of crappie but that was probably still my favorite part of the day
  6. The BPS version is a very thick bait, I fish them on a 5/0 EWG superline hook. Not sure how thick the big Senkos are, I can't afford to fish them just for fun.
  7. Jerkbaits catch the vast majority of my spring time bass as long as the water stays fairly clear.
  8. Pegboard is great for baits and rods also. I use bike hangers for my rods and hang them from the ceiling of the garage so they're out of the way from getting stepped on or knocked over and further away from any dust that gets stirred up so they stay cleaner. BPS sells some really handy racks that mount on the wall for plano boxes too.
  9. After walking Hillsdale a little yesterday and seeing some folks catching crappie under the Gardner Bridge my plan had been to get some minnows today and see if I could catch a few. Stopped at the baitshop/gas station in Hillsdale and the guy behind the counter said a couple guys had caught over 200 crappie at the outlet yesterday. Said they were thick in there and hungry. He must have been right because I was even able to catch a few They started liking the minnows but by the end they were preferring a jig. I don't know how deep the outlet is but I started fishing the bottom couple feet with very little luck. Once I noticed the guy on the other side catching fish fast only had his bobber set only about 2 feet down I moved my bobber up and started catching them right away. Fished for about 2 hours and caught probably between 40-50 crappie, 8-12 channel cats, and a BASS! Most crappie were 8-10 inches with a few up to 12" I guess they have been doing work on the outlet on the lake side and it's killed a bunch of fish in the outlet, mainly drum. They stunk pretty bad but but there was still plenty of fish to be caught. You can see all the dead fish laying along the bank. One of my biggest crappie was a pretty fish.
  10. I've got the Symetre in the little 750 size and I like it really well. I've got it paired with a 6' UL Avid and it is a sweet little combo. It's fun to take it and go toss little 2" grubs for whatever wants to bite sometimes to take a break from tossing heavier bass gear.
  11. Sounds like a nice day of fishing. The put and take trout lakes around here seem to bring out the poachers in mass. One of the lake it's a $100 fine per fish over you limit. A couple years ago they busted 2 guys 36 fish over their limits for trout and a dozen or so over their limit for catfish. Could have bought a lot of fish at the store for that kind of fine. I see lots of guys that catch their limits, go home and clean them, then they're back on the water a couple hours later keeping trout again. I don't eat the nasty things and they die once the water gets warm anyways so I don't really care about people keeping them but it's funny to see them get busted for it.
  12. Depends what you like and what your price range is. I use a 7' 6" MH/F LTB for flipping and it's my favorite flipping rod I've owned.
  13. I like the 7" BPS version for texas rigging with a 1/4oz weight for pitching into cover for big fish. It cuts down on a lot of bites but the ones I get are good ones. Never had much luck with them weightless like a smaller bait though.
  14. In Kansas it's so you can use 3 rods at a time. I spend quite a bit time fishing for big catfish on the river during the summer so the more rods I can have out the better my odds.
  15. I've never seen them do anything but give warnings to people and confiscate gear from people. Most people at the outlet it doesn't do much good to ticket because they don't exist in the system.
  16. I hate all the permits I buy each year. Lots of lakes and counties require extra permits on top of the state permit. Hunt/fish combo-38.50 3 pole permit-6.50 trout-12 state park vehicle permit 20.50 3 year boat sticker for both my boats-32.50 each and then the lake permits start adding on Wyandotte Co non-resident fish/boat/trout-77 Johnson Co resident boat/fish-27 Plus I buy my year Non-resident for Missouri-40 with trout-7.50 Arkansas 7 day nonresident permit with trout for the White River-29 Oklahoma 6 day nonresident permit-38.50
  17. After the 2 cold days in a row we're suppose to have I wouldn't have very high hopes if I was headed down there. All the zebra mussels pretty much take away most of the real cold water techniques I'd be using. I know the crappie fishermen are catching a few on minnows and crappie tubes though. Welcome to the forum! La Cygne has been really tough lately and it's usually worse on the weekend, especially if it's nice outside. 5 different members that I know of went last week and I think between all of us on 3 different days managed to boat 5 or 6 fish.
  18. One of my wife's shelties loves the water, the other one hasn't really gotten a chance to be around the water.
  19. She did really well, wasn't real excited about getting in the boat at first but after putting her in the boat she took to it pretty fast. She wasn't sure what to think of the big motor at first either but got over that pretty quickly. I bought a smaller dog bed for her that she laid on while I was moving with the big motor and then stood next to me watching the water while I was fishing. She's about 4 months old now and has started to show an interest in the water. She hasn't swam yet but she'll walk into the water without too much coaxing. I'm sure before long I'll be working to keep her out of the water.
  20. Took the dog out in the boat for the first time at Olathe today and fished for about an hour and a half. Water was 42.7-40.6. Fished a shakyhead, jerkbait, and jigging spoon, nada. Guy floating minnows under a bobber caught a decent crappie but that was the only one he'd caught in a couple hours.
  21. Looks like a very nice old boat for 2K but looks only get you so far. Will he let you take it somewhere to run it or have a mechanic look at it? I got a nice looking older Ranger for 4K several years ago, but it never ran well and I basically had a 4K dollar dock with a trolling motor.
  22. Very nice fish on a little bait! What rod/reel/line were you using?
  23. Isn't Curling an Olympic sport? I'm sure it takes a lot of hand/eye control and practice but how does that stay and wrestling go?? I'm not a big wrestling fan but it has to be one of the most physically demanding sports out there. I get to wrestle with enough people at work to know that minutes seem like hours when you're rolling around trying to get control over someone while they're trying to do the same to you.
  24. It's funny how rarely I snag a carp on a regular crank versus how often I get them on lipless baits. Maybe it's because I fish them quickly over shallow flats and grass where the carp hang out I suppose. It's always impressive when one of those big grass carp gets airborne. I caught a 35lb grassie on an ultralight several years ago that jumped and tailwalked like a marlin .
  25. I actually looked at that lake as an option but it seems like getting the permit may be a bit of a hassle?? I'm not afraid to get skunked fishing for big fish and I've seen a couple pictures of some monsters from that little lake.
