  1. I suspect you'll be very happy with that Powell you bought. It's a very sensitive rod at even it's full retail price point, and withstands a lot of abuse and still keeps going.
  2. Hooligan, thanks for the reviews.

    Alabama Rig?

The few times I caught doubles on a crankbait, the two bass would come in spiraling together with no fight at all. They seem to get in each other's way, or whatever.. not saying this video was or was not staged, I have no way to know that. Paul Elias says he caught doubles on that rig more than a few times, too. What interests me about the rig is that you can simulate a school of baitfish, that in itself I find really cool. If you can put 5 hudds on that rig, and have a sturdy enough rod to cast and fish that - it'd weigh more than 20 ozs - you have 5 stupid stocked trouts swimming along slowly!
  4. Who here has tried it out? Sounds like a cool idea.
  5. That's the prettiest lizard I've ever seen.. No wonder it caught fish.
  6. WRB, thank you for your input. I really appreciate it. I am sending you a PM. It'd be great if you can find time to go through it.
  7. Let's add a little more fuel? http://www.huddlestondeluxe.com/bigbaittheory.html How, if at all, does this theory apply to an NLMB? @WRB, exactly the sort of experience I'm looking to learn; although, fishing for NLMBs with big baits as I do, it's quite disheartening.
  8. Several times I've heard than northern strain bass are used to smaller meals, and I started to think why it should be so.. The forage base obviously exists. Big bluegills and crappies, perch, baby catfish and carp, and if nothing else, there's always smaller bass.. Then why would a big northern bass eat a smaller forage than a comparable sized florida strain? I don't think northern bass are dumber than their southern cousins and would spend any more energy per unit of food consumed? Is an 8" baby bass a normal meal for, say, a 5 lb northern largemouth? Does anyone have any experience related to this? Maybe an article/ forum post you read somewhere?
  9. X2. Northstar makes some great jigs; but on my lake, I consider myself lucky if I don't lose a jig before 10 fish on it. I like the Booyah Baby Boo jigs.. I buy them for $1.99 each from the local Walmart. Just put a tried and true trailer on it- I like Rage Craws, but there are other quality craws- and go fishing. Hop it along the bottom in good-looking locations, and you'll catch fish (casting jigs). Once you know how it's done, you can expand upon the technique. Jigs are very versatile, as least as versatile as spinnerbaits, cast better than a lot of other type of lures, and are reputed to catch bigger fish. Good luck!
  10. DVT is right.. the foot of the guide is hollow, and the tip end of the graphite (rod) slides inside that, and is glued by hot glue or whatever. Heat the tip with a cigarette lighter, that would melt the glue, and pull the damaged guide out. Go on to the St Croix website, and order a new tip-top guide for your rod. It should come with the St Croix crystallized glue. I believe it would cost you $5 including shipping.
  11. TT did a review way back.. http://www.tackletour.com/reviewsufixdna.html
  12. That's a heck of a lot of bass... I wish I could say that I caught 250 this season. My fishing season was basically shot due to several obligations; I got out only twice during the last 6 weeeks. Stay on them!
  13. This man speaks the truth! Other than the experience below, I have had no success. I once pulled out a big tree branch from the bottom of the lake. God knows what it weighed, but it was 25-30 lbs at least. 20 lb yo-zuri hybrid is some strong line. Of course, I have swum out more than a few times for my prized lures...
  14. Rod: Love the Powell max line, just like you do! I like longer rods for deep-cranking though Reel: Curado B's are great reels, I have a Curado 201B. Line: Sufix Siege is my favorite mono My Combo: Rod:Shimano Compre 7' MH/F (the old compre) Reel:Shimano Citica 201E Line: Alternates between 10 and 12 lb sufix siege (depends on what I can find locally) My all-purpose set-up.. caught me a 7.69 pounder this spring, and several other good bass. Also, my first baitcasting set-up.
  15. Rod: I was very unhappy with the one Savvy I ever purchased; returned that one. Reel: Never fished one, but supposedly an awesome reel Line: send some my way, I'll use it for backing lol My Combo: Powell Max 733 M/XF spinning Shimano Sonora (cheap, but gets the job done) 6/30 Daiwa Samurai with leader Combo for light jigs and plastics. The setup that I use the most.
  16. Fishing from the bank isn't as bad as it often seems. Did you know that most big bass are caught in less than 10 feet of water? Did you know that a lot of good big bass hunters beach their boat and fish? Fishing from the shore means you're always fishing uphill, which is a pretty good thing, if you ask me.. A few suggestions; get a good pair of polarized sunglasses, if you don't already have one. Also, walk around the shore and take photos and notes when the water is at its lowest level (I have a couple hundred photos of my favorite lake's entire shoreline). Over the winter, analyze those photos. Google maps is often a help to see the big picture and find useful structures (not cover).
  17. Idk anything about the rod or the reel, but I'd give Invizx a 5 out of 10. Too stretchy, and average abrasion resistance. There are many better fluoros in the same price range, although I guess it depends on what qualities you're looking for. Spiderwire Ultracast fluoro is a much better alternative and the one I like, when I use fluoro (very rarely). My combo: Mattlures MH swimbait rod (10/20 lb line, 1-4 oz lures) Shimano Curado 301E 15 lb (20 lb true test) Yo-Zuri hybrid. A very decent and economic set-up for 5"-7" hard swimbaits.
  18. Will do. I bought one of your floating U2's yesterday. I'm thinking of deadsticking this in locations where I'd detect followers.
  19. check your PM.
  20. Got it Matt. Thanks once again. Btw, do you embed one hook point in the belly of your floating U2 when deadsticking or let it dangle (hope you don't mind me asking)? Does that affect hookup ratio?
  21. In most bass fishing tournaments, the smallest (shortest) bass you can bring to the weigh in has to be 12"... so a bass 12" or longer is a "keeper". I didn't know they had bass tournaments in those days. I'm not sure I can make much sense of the phrase *his occupation was a 12" keeper* though. EDIT: Usually there are length limits on the size of bass you can keep to eat as well.
  22. Really? You learn something new everyday! Thanks J.
  23. I fish braid with leaders when I don't want the stretch that mono and copoly lines have. Mostly bottom bouncing techniques.
  24. I like the old Rebel Pop-R's. Also the Rapala skitter pops. Color doesn't matter as long as the belly is white! A cool thing with poppers is that you can walk the dog with most brands...
  25. I have seen a fellow BR member kill them on a fluke when schooling bass are busting shad on the top.. Myself, I've never had much luck on it.
