  1. I don't think it's awesome or anything. It's more about finding a system that works for me. I was addicted to swimbaits (and 8 footers) long before I consistently fished jerkbaits. Of course I was fishing regular topwaters like poppers, chuggers, spooks (baits that require rod action) on my long (7'6"- 8') jig or cranking rods, and sometimes working big baits with the rod too (especially large topwaters). It was an easy transition.
  2. Hard jerkbaits. I just twitch to the side, or if I'm twitching vertically, I end the twitches before the rod itself is vertical. Boat or shore-fishing. P.S. I twitch Deps 250s/ walk the dog punkers/ slammers with a Dobyns 867 too, which of course is an 8'6" rod.
  3. VLOGs on that site that must not be named. Might pick up a new trick or two from one of the OGs. Kinda talks about chatterbaits and A-rigs a little, but definitely a few good points here and there. Also, check out the 2 Clear Lake episodes on Stoked on Fishing with Newman and Paul Bailey.
  4. LOL, I had a Citica for a while on my first NRX, and then a Curado G for the rest of the time. I'm not into high-end reels really. Expensive rods, yes; enthusiast big baits, definitely; just not reels.
  5. Nope, them weeds don't stop me from fishing. They do stop me from fishing certain lures; but that's fine. Techniques matter more than the particular lure being used, and there are always workarounds.
  6. Yup. Perfectly summed up IMO. I prefer a long fast action rod though. Jig rods make great jerkbait rods for my preferences. There was a Loomis 893 on the flea market that I'd have gotten if I were looking for a dedicated jerkbait rod. I don't lose very many fish either (one reason being I don't fish jerkbaits a whole lot). As for your height OP, it matters little. I'm 5'8", all my rods are 7'6" or longer. Well, all except one, now that I have an NRX 893 on the way. But you get the point.
  7. Done. Now I need to find a cheap reel; a Curado G maybe. I love those. Missed a Chronarch E on Ebay yesterday, went for ~$110 shipped.
  8. What's the water temp? What other baits are you catching fish on?
  9. PF original. Thank you Bassindon.
  10. Sometimes. Can't say I've caught a lot, or anything big, fishing a jig like that. Might have something to do with the waters I fish. I first heard of it from an Iaconelli video. More recently, Matt Allen was talking about it in a seminar (maybe in the Fred Hall show, not sure).
  11. If I know one thing about SoCal bass, it's that they're highly pressured. Your best bet might be to tag along with someone who's catching fish (doesn't matter if it's from a boat or the banks) and won't mind showing you a thing or two. And oh yeah, most folks tend to fish too fast and too shallow. If the fishing is slow, slow down.
  12. Directional changes. Bill Siemantel seems to talk a lot about this. Think of a crankbait deflecting off a laydown or a boulder. Now here's the deal, your bait doesn't have to physically hit something to make that directional change. You can impart that action yourself, when the bait nears a piece of cover (or structure). You have to intimately know the water if the structure/ cover isn't visible. Change the speed or the depth. Remember that depth and speed are the two primary controls you have. (Paul talked about triggers above.) I like to end my retrieves with a figure 8 (or two) unless the water in front of me is really shallow, and I'm 100% sure there isn't a follower (bass are curious creatures).
  13. The tiny ones worked well for crappies.
  14. Costas on clearance. Apparently the price depends on how stylish the frame is (not sure). I have a pair with grey lenses, and one with amber ones.
  15. I had a pair of nail clippers that cut braid like nothing. Not sure where I bought it from, but I dropped it in the drink one day. The next pair of nail clippers don't seem to work half as well, unfortunately. I got a Rapala line clipper from Walmart last month for 2 bucks. This one works great on braid.
  16. The 893 is absolutely the best jig/ plastics rod I've ever had the pleasure to fish. Had one for almost a year, and then sold it when I gave up bass fishing for a year. http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/topic/117120-nrx-is-awesome/ I've been very very happy with my Helium3 (for bottom contact baits) that I bought for a steal when I got back into fishing, and I see no reason to replace it. But, but, you know, I'm getting the itch to get my hands on an NRX again. What to do, what to do? Besides, I'll have to get another reel, and figure out what to use the Helium3 for. This is just the sort of problem I like to have.
  17. Every rose has its thorn- Poison. Before that it was Rollercoaster- Luke Bryan. The one before that was Jessica- Allman Brothers.
  18. Pretty awesome!
  19. Topo maps, old aerial photos, low water photos, surrounding (ground) terrain, knowledge from dragging the bottom, watching color breaks (during a runoff), and more. Anything I can use.
  20. How confident are you in your fluoro knots?
  21. Oversimplification- I start with the third of the reservoir that's more likely to hold bigger bass in a given season. For cold water period, it's the lower third. Doesn't mean I'm not going to check other parts occasionally. I find the deepest water in the area (usually a creek channel), and then work shallower along/ around/ on structures. Points/ ridges/ humps/ edges of flats/ manmade structures (roadbeds etc). Sometimes, I'll not cast all the way into the creek channel, and make shorter casts/ stay shallower (depends on the depth I'm getting bites at). For the details, find and study the structure threads. Or read Bill Murphy's/ Buck Perry's books.
  22. Hog and a half! Congrats on the catch.
  23. 1. Does the Sammy (100 size) come stock with a split ring on the line-tie? 2. Does the Popmax come stock with a split ring on the line-tie? 3. What's the size and brand of the stock trebles on the Popmax? Thanks guys.
  24. 19 inches, on a Flashminnow 110SP. The pink treble got her (or maybe it's a him). 7'6" Kistler Helium3 light MH/ fast, Curado G6, 12# Tatsu.
