Big fan of ryes? I am not, unless they get to a certain point where the aging lets the spice/rye notes on the back end mellow out a bit. That being said, the standard 10yr Whistle Pig is a great pour and one that I do like. It is 10 yr ,100% rye and bottled at 100 proof. If you are a big fan of fruitiness, or look for specific fruit notes, this one might not be for you. It does emit on the nose and palate strong vanilla, which I like, and has a nice long rye finish.
It is a must try if you have never had it, and one of it's big sisters- Old World 12 yr- is in my top 3 ryes. It has a mixture of 3 different types of wine barrel finishes(Port, Madeira, and Sauterne) mixed in with 2/3ish of the standard Whistle Pig. In this release, the fruit notes seem to really pop, and the pour turns to velvet. Really smooth and very drinkable, just the price point jumps a bit to around $120.
