  1. As suggested above, find a rod repair service in your area and get it done right. It will not be that much.
  2. I use Yellow Rocket Fuel in my metal bearings, Oust Met oil in ceramic bearings, Reel X on my worm gears and Super Lube on the gears. I used to pack my pinion bearings in Super Lube, but now dip them in TSI 301. Many anglers use Yamaha Blue Marine grease on their gears and pinion bearings. Not Yamaha general purpose grease, but the blue. Drag washers get Shimano drag grease, but Cal's is also excellent.
  3. All rods mentioned are excellent rods. I have been fishing with plain old BPS Carbonlite now for years in 6'6" and 7' in MH and med fast tips and have no complaints. I buy each year during the classic sale and some are less than $100. I have always been attracted to how incredibly light and sensitive they are. This year I am going to look at their new titanium rod,, which is normally $129.99 and believe will be marked down. Had one problem a few years ago on the black series with a line guide insert coming out and they replaced it with no problem. No problems since and they really get tested on the huge beds on the Tidal Potomac.
  4. I have just always used Cabelas rod sleeves. They are inexpensive and work very well on my 7'rods. They are not so tight that they are hard to get them on and off. Some of mine are over 10 years old and going strong. I also like that they can be adjusted for any length.
  5. I could not resist and received 3/0 and 4/0 hooks today. I Texas rigged a Senko on the 3/0 and it went on very easily, which I was concerned about with all the hook angles, but no problem. The bend at the line tie has a great angle which should serve to keep a bait from slipping. I also noticed that the hook point extends down much further on the top of the worm than the Gammie EWG hook point. The hook points are really, really sharp. Now, if it would just get a little warmer I could give it the wet test.
  6. I have been crunching down my barbs for years now and do not lose a fish because of it. It sure is easy to remove the hook from a deep hooked fish with no bleeding. I use a Baker hook removal tool. I leave treble hooks, spinner bait hooks and chatterbait hooks alone.
  7. Cabelas used to have a split ring size chart on their web site, but I do not know if it is still there.
  8. Anyone tried these introduced at ICAST? The Trapper Tackle company came up with the design and it is interesting to say the least. I watched their video on the design rationale and it seems logical to me, but what do I know.
  9. Bass Feast Smelly Jelly. No shelf life for storage. Now using it for 15 years (not the same jar LOL).
  10. You see carbon fiber automotive components on high end cars, but you will not see graphite components.
  11. I have three 70XG's and use them for all my plastics fishing. Really love these reels. It took me a bit to come up with the right settings with a base of two brakes on, but once I hit it all was more than well. I have all three spooled with InvizX 15lb flouro (.013" dia) on 7' MH Carbonlites.
  12. The best deal on InvizX is Amazon. I paid $85 for a 15lb 1000yd spool. You have to watch though as the price will fluctuate.
  13. I use InvizX 15lb, which is only .013 in diameter and Gander's flouro 12lb for instance is .013, so it is really thin flouro.
  14. The Shimano facility in Maylasia is staffed by only Shimano trained personnel with Shimano components and they have been producing quality Shimano reels for years. That is why the Curado 70 is only $200 and not $250, or more.
  15. Being as anal as I am, no matter how little use a reel gets during the season, in December and January they all get stripped and relubed.
  16. Bought one from Cabela's 10 years ago (their Tourney Trail) and it is still going strong.
  17. Hose the line on the spool with KVD Line and Lure Conditioner. I must admit I have never heard of warming the spool in years of fishing.
  18. But some have to fight Arthur, so small helps.
  19. Go for it. I sold mine last year for $90 and it was used, but in absolutely 100% perfect shape with ABEC 7 SS bearings and Carbontec drags. I also tend to do a little internal polishing. The guy in Texas who bought it was so happy he sent me a custom painted crankbailt. That reel was made in Malaysia for those who think Shimano Malaysia is inferior. Built like a tank.
  20. Don't over look Mizmo tubes. They are excellent and sturdy. Lots of sizes and colors. Been using them for 10 years now. Rig with a 3/0 EWG hook and 3/16 tungsten slip sinker. No, I don't sell them just enjoy fishing with them.
  21. I have what used to be a 6'6" MH BPS Extreme and 8years ago broke off 3" and figured what the heck, it is an inexpensive rod so I put on a new tip and kept on trucking with it for fishing plastics. I have landed a whole lot of bass with that thing over the last 8 years and it worked just fine. I only fun fish for myself.
  22. This is not gospel, but it may help: USE SWIVELS ON Carolina rigs Fluke rigs In line spinners (If line twist occurs) USE SNAP SWIVELS OR SWIVELS ON Standard Spoons Mepps Syclops TIE DIRECT TO Buzz baits Chuggers (or split ring/duolock) Jigs Frogs/rats Prop baits Spinner baits Stick baits (i.e.Zara Spook) Tail spinners Weedless spoons Weight forward spinners TIE TO SPLIT RING OR DUOLOCK SNAP Crank baits Lipless crank baits Jerk baits Blade baits Jigging spoons* * Swivel if desired
  23. Look into Yellow Rocket Fuel. An excellent bearing oil.
  24. I don't know what TW offers, my regulars are Yellow Rocket Fuel for spool bearings, ReelX on worm gear and drive shaft bearing and Super Lube, or Yamaha Blue Marine grease on gears. Drags get Cal's or Shimano drag grease. I had been packing my pinion bearings in grease for years, but I am now removing all trace of grease in them and dipping them in TSI301. Works great! When it comes to lubricants, you will find everyone has their favorites, regardless of reel manufacturer.
  25. A big surprise to me was how tight I could make the cast control cap and still get incredible distance. It took me a while to figure that one out. That was the final adjustment that set it on the money.
