  1. I've been looking to buy some of these jigs but I have one hesitation. They are more expensive than most jigs and because I lose a few each outing i bet the cost would add up. Do you guys think the added cost is worth it?
  2. I've been using this color a lot this year as I wanted to learn how to jig. It's been my go to color this year in any water condition.
  3. Haha thats funny, I guess we all do stupid things from time to time. In my case I'd much rather feel like an idiot than have to buy a new reel. Now it works and it's all oiled up. I never oiled a reel before, at least I learned a few things.
  4. I just purchased the tec spec MH xfast casting rod for jigging and I think it's a pretty decent rod for the money. It's a tad heavy but it feels good in my hands.
  5. Thanks for the videos and advice, sounds like standing on a kayak isn't an issue as long as your not an idiot and have a decently stable boat. I'm going to assume buying a kayak in the winter is a good idea, is there usually sales going on?
  6. Thanks for all the suggestions guys, I ended up going with F & S tec spec. 6'10'' MH xfast. It is definitely a heavier rod as compared to the veritas and carrot stick, but it feels good in my hand and pretty well balanced with my 8.8 oz casting reel. Thanks for all the advice guys. I caught my first fish on a frog with it today, never even used a frog before. Maybe during the winter I'll look for a high end rod on sale if I decide this is the style of rod I like.
  7. Well it was something stupid like I expected....I dont remember doing this but I had my drag loosened all the way so it was basically on free spool so nothing happened. But it's all fixed and oiled now. Man I feel like an idiot.
  8. I took the spool out of my daiwa exceler because I was switching lines and now the spool wont spin when I put the reel back together. I've probably taken this thing apart about 3 times. The reel is just a bit over a year old. When I turn the handle I can see some part inside the reel which connects to the spool spinning when I have the spool out. The spool will also turn when the thumbar is engaged and I manually try to spin the spool. Could lack of oil on my reel cause this issue or is this something bigger? Could I have lost a piece? I was going to buy a new rod today at dicks and now this happens...I was hoping to fish with a new rod today. Thanks guys
  9. I was able to go to a local outdoor store today which only had a couple of rods, the veritas and vengance. They only had medium action but the Veritas felt like a MH, that thing had some backbone to it. However I think I hated the color even more seeing it in person. I did feel the weight difference in the veritas and vengence. I'm current casting reel is a daiwa exceller which weighs 8.8 oz. Would that be really butt heavy on a lighter rod? It sucks that I wont be able to hold the vendetta as no stores around me carry that. I'm still planning on going to dick in a few days. However more suggestions on rods would be great. How good is the vengence for a $50 price rod?
  10. this topic isn't about high end rods, i'm talking about weight differences in the price range I suggested. Where is a link to weights of rods? It seems you know what some rods weight. The only rod in my price range I can even find the weight on is the Bass Mojo,
  11. I believe they would. I'm not saying no one can feel those few ounces, i'm just suggesting it's mostly the real experienced anglers who can feel those ounces. Just like anything in life, usually the people who know a lot about a particular subject can pick up on small details than many other people could not.
  12. I just find it very hard to believe that many people can tell the difference between a few ounces of weight which equates to something like a 2-5% difference in overall weight. Sometimes that difference in feeling may very well be the difference in tip heavy vs butt heavy not the overall weight. I'm assuming lighter isn't always better because I'm sure the weight of the reel plays a huge factor, a lighter rod on a heavy reel may balance very poorly. That was kind of a rant, but any thoughts on that? I will take a look at the shimano rods, when does the new line comeout?
  13. Does anyone know of a link or website that I can find the weight of the veritas and vendetta. I keep hearing the veritas is lighter, which would be a huge advantage but I have no idea how much lighter it really is.
  14. I'm a bank fisherman looking for a new casting rod. My last rod was a cheap ($30) 6'6 m action field and stream rod. At this point anything is an upgrade. I dont want to spend a lot of money because I want to get a rod with some features I've never tried so when/if I do decide to buy a really nice rod in the future I'll know more about which features I want in a rod. I'm looking at a 7'0 MH, preferably split grips and a foam handle (haven't had a rod with either of those) but those last two features aren't deal breakers. I dont have a BPS or Cabellas nearby, just dicks sporting goods. I would prefer to hold the rod before I buy it, but at the same time I'm new to the details of rods and it's hard for me to tell the difference when I do hold multiple rods. I'm looking at getting the Vendetta. I know for 20 bucks more I can get the veritas but I hate the looks of that rod. As much as we dont want to admit looks do play some role in rod selection dont they? lol What rods under $100 are good value rods? I've heard the dicks tec spec rods are good for $60, the BPS carbonlite (with shipping thats about 120 which is more than I want to spend)
  15. Sounds like it shouldn't be too much of a problem to pitch and flip from a kayak, thanks for the answers.
  16. I must start off saying I have never been in kayak before, so I'm sorry if this question sounds dumb. I'm looking to get some type of small fishing vessel next year for bass fishing and a yak is top on my list right now and this question jumped into my head. Is it possible to effectively pitch sitting down in kayak? It seems that one would be so close to the water and the kayak that they would both get in the way. I'm sure standing up would solve this problem, but I could see the constant standing up and sitting down getting cumbersome as you move from each piece of cover ever 5-10 minutes.
  17. Thanks everyone, i'll take your guys advice. I just wanted to learn to use a jig and the last 3 times i've been out, for a total of 9 hours or so I have only landed two bass with the jig. I have a couple of booyah and strike king jigs, actually those are the only ones i own. I purchased about 7 jigs last weekend along with strike king baby craws as my trailer.
  18. I'm trying to learn to fish jigs with a craw trailer, and I'm looking for some advice. I have read all the jig articles on this site. I fish from the bank and the places I can reach have a depth of about 1-4 feet, thick "weeds" (not sure what kind of vegetation they are I live in Vermont if that helps at all) on almost every inch on the bottom of this pond. I feel like the 3/8oz jig doesn't punch through the weeds as well as a 1/2 oz jig but since the water is so shallow the 1/2 oz jig i feel falls to fast for the bass. Any advice on how to effectively work this pond with a jig.
  19. The Exceler is all aluminum, I'm thinking about purchasing that reel soon, is your dad's reel noisy? I've heard of that being a problem on the Excelers its very quiet. i like the reel very much. Awesome, thank you very much
  20. The Exceler is all aluminum, I'm thinking about purchasing that reel soon, is your dad's reel noisy? I've heard of that being a problem on the Excelers
  21. Thanks for all the answers so far, gives me some things to think about. Just have to decide on medium or medium heavy rod.
  22. If you use backing can you still put tape on the backing as well as tie the braid to the backing. The reason why I ask is because i'll be getting my first baitcaster soon and I want the tape there because I know I'll be getting tons of backlashes when I start. Can you use any type of tape?
  23. I would not put that low of braid on a baitcaster, it will cause digging in the spool and you will have lots of break off ect... I always use 50-65# and have been really happy with that. The lowest I would go is 30# braid and when you spool it up on the reel make sure you have some resistance so you have a less chance of it digging in the spool... I think you misunderstood me or i was unclear. I said 10-12 lb equivalent braid (equivalent to mono), meaning around 50lb test for braid. So what I'm asking is can i use 4lb mono or 6lb flourocarbon as backing for 50lb braid
  24. Thanks bwell, yeah the BPS PQ baitcaster gets a lot of good reviews here, i just wish I had a store close to me. Maybe i'll wait till I go to florida in a month to try out the BPS PQ baitcaster
