  1. Wow, that's incredible. I think you've had more issues personally than I've ever read about combined on the forums! FWIW, I have 4 Gen2 Premier's and I fish quite a bit. I've never, ever had a single issue with any of them. Nor has anyone I know that owns one.
  2. Agreed. Shimano has certainly run down the G. Loomis brand. Sad to watch, really. I would not expect great things if they buy Jackall.
  3. If you mean on my Abu's, none. On any of them. I own 7. 1 Gen2 SX, 4 Gen2 Premiers, an MGX and the Gen3 STX.
  4. I agree with K_mac and Glenn. I have a sharpening stone on my retractable lanyard that is attached to my pocket anytime I'm fishing. Also has line nippers on there. I check the hooks out of the box on ALL brands of lures and hooks and sharpen as needed. I've never had a hookpoint break. As Glenn says, all the stuff these lures can run into dulls them up. Check and sharpen often!
  5. Glad you like your MGX! I'm not a fan of the IVCB brakes. Just makes the reel too hard to set and fussy to fish, especially with baits from 3/8oz and under. And you do read that often on the forums. I never should have bought it given the very mixed reviews it gets. But I eventually had to see for myself. I've tried different lines, upgraded spool bearings and a different rod. But it just remained more of a pain to fish with than my Gen2 Premier's. Unfortunate as I really like the way the reel feels and fishes otherwise. It's currently stored in the boat as an emergency spare reel. I guess I should probably just sell it. The brakes are the reason I choose the STX in the Gen3's. It still uses the dual brakes like the Premier's used to have. The Gen3 Premier's get the IVCB. And I hope they work fine in that reel. But I'll wait for a few months and see how the reviews roll in for those.
  6. What longevity/durability issues do you mean? Outside of the finish on my Gen2's, I've never had any issue with them over the 2+ years I've been fishing them.
  7. I replaced that part on my new STX with the plate from my MGX knob. It did not make any difference. What gen STX are you referring to here? I didn't see any inconsistency in spool tension on my Gen3. Took some force on the knob to get it set, but it stayed where I set it.
  8. Me, too. I was half expecting the reel to blow out huge bird nests because of the spool tension, which I did run a little loose. Was not an issue, though. I got one mild birds nest while using it, but that's to be expected with a new reel while exploring its capabilities. And it was not a big mess. Easy one to clear.
  9. Forgot to mention about the finish. About the only knock on the Gen2's was that the finish was quick to show boat rash and thumb bar wear. Very durable reels otherwise, and boat rash does not bother me personally as these are just tools to me. But it is something you hear pretty often about them on the forums. Just from looking at the Gen3, I'd guess that issue will continue. Finish was a slightly different color than my Premier's, but otherwise seems the same. Thumb bar does not seem changed at all. Only time will tell for sure, though.
  10. I doubled the brown discs on my Gen3, and it made no difference. Even though the same components are used on the Premiers and MGX I have, they do not need nearly the force. Hard to understand why it would be different.
  11. I received my Gen3 STX from my local tackle store on Friday. Tore it down and clean/lubed it. Bearings were over oiled, like pretty much all factory bearings are in any reel. But they spun up really, really well once I was done. Used the oil that came with the reel and Hot Sauce on the gears, pawl, etc. Spooled it up with 12# Sequar Invisix. I put the reel on an NRX853 and took it fishing this morning. One thing I noticed once spooled and mounted is that you really have to crank on the reel tension knob to get a 3/8 jig to slow it's decent. I thought something was wrong with it at first. I have a bunch of other Abu's and the Gen2 Premiers and MGX use the same components inside that knob. So I tried transplanting the guts, using extra shims, even swapping the knob from my MGX. The MGX knob as a whole did make it a little easier, but not just switching the guts out. But it seemed to get a little easier as I worked on it, so I just put it together stock. Had it out on the lake today and am really impressed with it. Tried jigs between 1/4-1/2oz. Casted them all really well, into the breeze, with the breeze, didn't mess it up. With the 1/2oz, I had one centrifugal brake on, about 1/2 on the mags and a bit loose on the spool. Cast that jig a mile! Really impressive distance. And I have Gen2 premiers, Steez, Cores, MGX and Calais DC's to compare it to. Yeah, the Calais is still the king for distance, but this thing was impressive, right at the top of the list, for sure. Palmed really well. I got the 7.1:1 model and I did notice the bigger gear housing with the end of my fingers when I was handling it. But it otherwise felt like my Core 50's and Steez. EVA knobs have a little more textured feel than the Gen2 reels, but I think it's a good thing. Biggest fish I caught on it was a 2lb Kentucky, so no real test of the drag. But I'm sure it'll be fine considering it's a carbontex type setup. I still think the cast control knob needs too much pressure to get the spool to slow down. But it didn't seem to need as much tension. I'll wait to hear what others report about it. I know AG/Pure Fishing will stand behind it, so I'm not worried. Bottom line, great reel. I removed a Steez to put this reel on the NRX853, and it looks like the STX has found a long time home there.
  12. That's the beauty of the Gen3 STX. You get both types of brakes. Turn one or the other off if you don't like it. Or mix and match them to get the best of both worlds. Gen2 STX and Premier's have the same system.
  13. Got my Gen3 STX yesterday. Local tackle shop has the S, SX and STX models in. Tore it down last night (bearings were way over lubed, of course, like most every reel). Hope to get it on the water tomorrow. Nice little reel on the bench! Hope yours comes in.
  14. Good to hear they're starting to arrive. I just stopped my local tackle shop to see if my Gen3 STX has arrived yet. No joy, but hopefully soon. Hope you enjoy your new reel.
  15. What he said! Actually, it was Quillback that introduced my wife and I to Gussanos. They make great pies! But we do mostly Papa Murphy's as they are very convienient to where we live, excellent pies and you bake them at home. So hot out of the oven!
  16. Mostly clear water fishing for me. GP is the go-to color. Watermelon Candy on sunny days can attract more fish. Black for lowlight conditions. I carry a few more colors in its little brother, the Zoom Finesse Worm. Some purples, morning dawn.
  17. Yeah, most tourny guys hate Beaver. It's a fickle lake. A good example was at the first day of the FLW weigh in this spring on Beaver. 1st day leader was saying he'd caught like 25 keepers and said "really, it was pretty easy". Went on about how he was confident in his pattern for the entire tournament. He never made the weekend. That's the way Beaver is. But there has been some consistent patterns lately. We're putting about 25 bass a day in the boat on several trips over the last few weeks. See my buddy Quillback's post that I pointed out above for more details.
  18. No hook breaking issues on mine, either. And I've been through a bunch of them now.
  19. Also been using the spinshot all summer. I like them quite a bit. Zero line twist is the biggest advantage. I had a lot of issue with line twist the old way. I don't thread the worm on much farther than the barb so that the worm sits vertical. That makes up for the hook sagging a bit on the swivel. The only bad parts I've found is the one extra knot to tie them on, and loosing them is more expensive.
  20. tipptruck, is this the store just south of Wausau? If so, sorry to hear about it. I usually spend my summers up near Tomahawk, and that is a go to store for me up there. I did not get up there this summer, though. I wonder if all that road construction hurt their business?
  21. Head over to Ozark Anglers Forum and see the section on Beaver Lake. Quillback put some good tips in that forum recently.
  22. There really is no best. I fish c-rigs a LOT. The kind of bait on the hook varies with seasons, temps, water clarity, fish moods, etc. Anything from small craws and finesse worms to 12" curly tails will work. So bring a variety and let the fish tell you what to use.
  23. Good review, thanks. I would sure add the non-accessable VBS to the short comings list, though. IMO, that's a big deal. I do adjust the VBS on my Shimanos, including my Calcutta TE GT. To have to disassemble the reel to get to them just makes no sense. That sure makes the JDM versions look a lot better.
  24. I read about the wild child thing a fair amount on the forums. I guess that if all you fish is Daiwa, it might not be as big an issue. These are the only Daiwa baitcasters I own, so maybe they're all that way. I fish a mix of Daiwa, Shimano and Abu.
  25. We're all different. I own two Core 50's and two Steez's, 100ha and 103ha. Even if they were the same price, I'd buy the Core's. Smoother and much less fussy reels. Can be easily adjusted for changing conditions and don't have the built in "wild child" thing that the Steez's do. And my Steez's have been tuned, which made them better, but still somewhat unpredictable. In perfect conditions, the Steez's can probably cast a bit further in stock form than a Core. But I don't often fish in windless conditions. And if I do, it's usually not a good day. Fish feed better when the wind is up a little, it seems. I also have a Curado 50E with orange seal bearings. My Core's and Steez's have upgraded bearings, too. I don't think the Curado gives up much, if anything, to the Core. Except an ounce or so of weight, of course. Both great reels.
