  1. What do you have BOTH of your brakes set at when throwing those lures?
  2. Wildbillb beat me to it. That's a great video, and a very easy to use method.
  3. They are still popping up on a regular basis with the reel seat problem. And lots of other issues, too. But the reel seat issue was never a problem on the spinning rods.
  4. +1. I use it in 6lb for my spinners and have for a couple of years. Great line. Only breakoff's I've had were big stripers around trees. Just not stout enough tackle to control them, not the lines fault. Never tried it on a baitcaster in the bigger test strength line.
  5. I've pretty much found the same thing. If it is a KVD lure, it will generally produce. I was skeptical at first for the reasons K_Mac suggests. But the more of the KVD stuff I use, the more fish I catch. Caffeine Shads, for another example, work better for me than Flukes. Just starting using the Ocho's recently and they seem to be at least the equal of the Yamato Senko so far, but time will tell there.
  6. I've been using the SD Jam Knot with Suffix 832 65lb braid for my A-rigs, too. Have not had any issues with it.
  7. Actually, it's illegal for first cousins to marry here in Ark. I see it is legal in Mass, though. Hmmm.... Anyway, again, he was not fired for shagging her. He was canned for LYING to the university and for his conduct in influencing the hiring/promoting of her to her new position at the U of A.
  8. I agree that the MBR843 would do fine with 1/4oz jigs and 10lb line, depending on the reel, of course. I run 12# FC on a Calais DC on my MBR843 GLX and it's really a very versatile setup. I fish everything from Wiggle Warts, to jigs, to t-rigs, spinnerbaits, spoons, etc on it. I don't consider it as heavy as my BCR GLX rods, though. It has a more flexible tip, but a strong middle and butt section. The MBR does give up a little in bottom sensitivity to the BCR's, though.
  9. According the show I watched Evers fishing them in, he was talking about it as a summer pattern. But it seems folks here have had luck with it at different times than that.
  10. I watched the AD on the news this morning. He was fired for lying to the University Faculty more than anything else. The facts that he hired/promoted this girl over many other good candidates and that he'd given her $20k on the side didn't help his case, either.
  11. Zoom Horny Toad works well too.
  12. A buddy of mine told me about eagles swimming a couple of years ago. He witnessed it in Canada on a fly in trip. A bald eagle swam a large dead northern pike to shore. Very cool to see it on a video though!
  13. I use both. I pre-rig leaders on Cabela's small "tackle tamers". I have one with mono leaders and one with FC. I fish a lot of c-rigs, but rarely find much difference between the two types of leaders as far as catching fish. The stretch you should be worried about is the mainline.
  14. I agree. I have no desire to watch him or Bill Dance or whomever go out on a private pond full of big, hungry bass. Teaches me nothing.
  15. I have two Steez 103's, mounted on NRX's. They are okay reels, but really needed to be tuned before they became consistently useable. Before tuning, they'd get really upset by any changing of the wind speed and direction and have lots of backlashes. And I still have to adjust them more for that than any of my other reels. They do cast nicely though, especially with the upgraded bearings and polished spool ends, at least in ideal conditions. I have 100 spools for them as well, also tuned, and tend to prefer those overall. It's a shame a high end reel like that needs to be tuned, though. I will not be buying anymore of them. Just do not have the bang for the buck. My Core 50 with user installed upgraded bearings performs just as well, and is also on an NRX. Heck, my Premier's with stock bearings are smoother than the Steez's and come very close in performance to them. And are much easier to adjust. I was all hot about getting a Steez rod for a while. But read too many review's like Gone_Fishin's above and the Tackle Tour reviews of them to pull the trigger.
  16. For shallow fishing, the 6.4 might work better. I fish A-rigs on a 7.1 (Johnny Morris Gold) and 5.1 (calcutta TE250 GT). I prefer the 5.1 as it's much easier to reel the bait along with it, but I do need to keep that handle moving pretty good when fishing shallower structure.
  17. Not sure what you're disagreeing with. That the defect rate is higher than 1-2%? If so, that's fine. We all have to form our own opinion on that based on the information available to us. Like someone else in this thread, my local dealer told me a while back that every single NRX casting rod that they'd sold had come back at least once with cork splits or reel seat issues. There sure is a lot of information out there that makes the number look far bigger than 1-2%, IMO. The fit and finish issues seem to be something new. I didn't have those issues with my older NRX's. There's one guy over on the other forum that had to have 4 rods in a row replaced, directly from ShimLoomis, because of some awful build issues. It's just incredible to me that these rods are making it out the door. Someone at Loomis had to have seen that and said "Ship it anyway". If not, they do not have an inspection process at all.
  18. No, I don't have that issue. I really like the NRX hook holder. I fish a lot of t-rigs, c-rigs and t-rigged senkos and it allows me to not have to pull the point out of the bait each time I want to put the rod away. Saves time when going back to that rod to fish it again and it makes the baits last longer.
  19. Makes sense. You know, I really need to add the issues up better. I'm sure it's more than 5. Casting rods (803, 853(2), 893, 873, 854) -803 broken tip on a cast 2nd time out. -Replacement 803 reel seat let go, store gave me an 853 to replace it -853 reel seat let go -853 foregrip cork split -893 had issues from the factory. Fit and finish issues ( http://www.jebruns.com/RodsReels/NRX893Scratches1.jpg ). Replacement has been good. -853 rod tip broke while fishing with Quillback the other day. He can attest I was doing nothing abusive to the rod when it snapped. Spinning rods (822S SYR,822S DSR): -Fit and finish issues on the 822S SYR ( http://www.jebruns.com/RodsReels/NRX822SYR_QCIssues2.jpg ) So 7 issues so far, 6 requiring replacements. I should have sent the 822SYR back as it had other small issues like in the picture, but I figured my odds of getting anything better were at best a crap shoot. Hard to believe at these price points that we have to settle for this kind of crap. Not just me, either. If you follow some of the NRX threads on the fishing forums, there are many stories far worse than mine. I sure wish Loomis sold the NRX blank. Someone else mentioned that on a different board, too. You'd sure as heck hope they wouldn't be doing that with the NRX's. But even if they were, you'd think any kind of even cursory inspection would catch some of this stuff. How can this junk get out of the factory? Crazy.
  20. Over on tackle tour, there's a sub-forum for "manufacturers support", or something close to that. The ShimLoomis rep there goes by the username "bantam1". He's on other sites as well. Anyway, if you research some of the NRX threads over there, you can find him claiming the 1-2% rate. There's also a recent dicussion in that forum about a "new glx" where Bantam1 tells us Loomis is working hard on getting rid of the Xpeditor coverage altogether. Crafty the way they're going to work out from under it. But sure is a hose job for all those legacy Loomis rod owners. The warranty will still be in place, but not the service plan.
  21. Sorry, that just reads a little funny. Sounds like a 50% failure rate to me, not flawless. Personally, of my 7 NRX's, I've had to have 5 replaced (one twice). All because of manufacturer defects. Love fishing with them, but sure wish they were as well built as the older rods. I've got a few GLX's also. Never had any of these kinds of issues with them. And that seems to be what most report. Unfortunately, the NRX does not fall into that same quality built category. Custom rod guys talk a lot about the blanks from Gary Loomis' new company, North Fork Tackle. You can have a Kistler custom built with those blanks. Only a one year warranty, though.
  22. One of my green ones has a bunch of fit and finish issues, too. I'm also not sure what to beleive about the green replacing the blue, but I do know for a fact that the greens are certainly not defect free.
  23. There has been some speculation to that effect, but I kind of doubt it. It's against federal law to refurb/remanf the product and not clearly label it as such. Hard to believe ShimLoomis would take that chance.

    Jerkbaits!

Can't believe nobody has mentioned the new STX by Luke "E" Strike. Great jerkbait and suspends much better out of the box than it's $25-30 competitor. Catches fish at least as well, too.
  25. Not much. About $100. I went there all ready to buy another high end reel and/or rod. But the Springfield store had zero Calais DC, Steez's, MGX's, etc. Also had zero NRX or Steez rods. Very disappointing. I was already well stocked on lures, so just bought a few of the things they had on special. Some decent seminars by DeFoe and Evers, so the trip was still worthwhile.
