  1. The ONLY thing to worry about with your boat and Malletts (Inner or Outer) is the boat chop (Canadian Navy) can cause big rollers even on calmish days. You can launch into Malletts from the Sandbar or up in the Lamoille River as well. You may even want to launch at the Apple Island Marina (South Hero) and then go under/through the sandbar. These options may give you more area to fish if the winds or traffic build up. I am offering this up as a local to the area. If it's windy and the boat traffic is nuts (this weekend is the Lake Champlain International Derby, the largest freshwater derby in the world) you can go to: Lake Iroquois or Shelburne Pond. Both are full of big girls and get a lot less traffic.
  2. The guides are built by this company: http://sea-guide,com http://sea-guide.com/product-category/categories/hero-hi-grade-guides/
  3. I had the 735 Savy. In my limited time with the Fury it's at least as sensitive. Balance and weight are close.
  4. 735 for sure. I have a 734 Champion that I bought to replace a MH St. Croix Avid. I was told a 734 would be similar to the MH St. Croix... It's not, it's much lighter. The 735 is a bit more powerful with a bit softer tip than the MH Avid. 734<MH St. Croix<735.
  5. Dobyns seems to fall into that west coast thing (my term) along with Phenix and Lamiglas. Their "Fast" is slower than most all other fast rods out there. Likewise these manufacturers also overstate their rod powers. I guess it's in following with the JDM trend to do the same thing. I got to fish my Fury 735 in a tournament this weekend and it's exactly like you said, well balanced, comfortable and certainly sensitive. I was tossing 4.8" Keitechs with a 1/4 oz hook all the way up to a 10" Senko (1.5oz) and it handled both just fine.
  6. REM oil for bearings (Shimano oil as well). Boeshield T9 for level wind and knob bearings.
  7. Weightless backwards with a 4/0 EWG (the standard Hydra Fat Ika method) and 1/0 circle hook through the transition from tentacles to body with a nail weight in the nose
  8. T-rig, flip/punch, chatterbait and swim jig trailers, and on biffleheads.
  9. T-rig, flip/punch, chatterbait and swim jig trailers, and on biffleheads.
  10. I use a 7'-7'3" MH fast rod 14-20 lb Fluoro and a 6.?:1 ratio reel (I slow roll a lot of swimbaits). A 7' MH fast St Croix Avid is awesome for the fishing that you describe.
  11. So I have a Tournament tomorrow. Here are some specifics about the area... I am hoping someone can just tell me to chill out or give examples of what they have done in similar conditions. Southern Champlain ("Ti"): Water is high fifties to low sixties... It was 72 a week and a half ago... Rained basically 3 out of every 4 days for the last 2 weeks, the water which is normally a clay stained color is now muddy. Supposed to rain a lot this evening and tonight into the very early morning. Largemouths are post spawn Weeds are a bit behind but are there. Smallies are a bit of a run away but on beds... however the whole lake is running high and dirty (you can see a mud slick 30 miles long, from the mountains). There is an ABA tournament out of Plattsburgh NY (expect 20-30 boats to make the run to where our tournament is). There is also an Open launching an hour after us, 5 miles south of us with 70+ boats... This is where over analytical neurotic guy comes out... Water temp drop, water level rising and mud tells me that they are either following the water line and eating flooded stuff OR they are just like all living creatures and want stability/comfort and say screw it and settle off deeper where the water temp and clarity is less affected by the recent changes. I'm leaning, with post spawn, towards the latter. Compromised visibility tells me to go with Chatterbaits/Cranks. Then I consider the 100 boats blasting all over, most likely tossing the same baits and I start to wonder if the fish will be overwhelmed by all the racket and maybe slowly fishing big baits (Swimbait/Worm) would be advantageous. Then the Smallies... They are on beds but it's a good 15 miles + to them and there is no guarantee that they will still be there or that we can see them with the mud... Smallies in the middle of Lake Champlain are VERY fickle teenage girls. One minute they are on a reef eating craws, then next they like Justin Bieber and are up shallow for a day. Any tips/ideas aside from medicating myself?
  12. For a point of reference the 734 Dobyns feels less powerful than a MH St. Croix... Very close though.
  13. I can get the full specs. I'll post when I get them.
  14. With a reel mounted and just sitting around with it, they feel very similar. The Fury definitely has a faster action. Both cast about the same, and if the rain ever stops and fish hits the baits I'll tell you about that.
  15. Evidently you are not familiar with the gentlemens clubs in Montreal or Vancouver... Those lure factories catch even non fishermen! (Rim shot)
  16. I've got the 735. It's pretty nice... Not enough time for a conclusion yet, but so far I have no complaints.
  17. The E series of Curado and Citica were the same with the exception of a Bearing under the driveshaft, spool anodizing, and handle assembly. MSRP was $179.99 and $119.99. That was 6-7 years ago, adjust for exchange rates and it's about the same spread. Shimano has been doing this for years and years and it seems to work out just fine. My E Series reels all perform basically the same regardless of the name printed on them.
  18. Carolina Rig a Rage Shrimp. Ridicule every Bass you catch by calling them "Redfish wannabes!"
  19. I am holding in my hands a Dobyns Fury 735. It's pouring rain here so this is a "Living Room Pro Staff" review. Straight as an arrow Guides all in line Cork is nice, not a lot of filler Epoxy work is clean Reel Seat lock nut has no extra threads showing when a reel is mounted. Balance point is less than an inch in front of the front of the reel (Citica E and Lexa mounted) 3 Double foot guides, 6 single plus tip. Looks awesome. Compared to Veritas 766, Carrot Stix 7'6" H, Mojo 7'9" H, and Savy 735 it just feels better in the hand, not as unwieldy heavy/stiff pool cue feeling. Doing the "floor to tip test" it feels and has a taper like a 7'MHF St Croix that spent 2 months in the gym (more power, same curve/action). I'm impressed so far, very impressed.
  20. I'd go lighter than 12 for the Jerkbaits (8-10). I love the stuff on my Swimbait rod and as Carolina rig leaders.
  21. The Daiwa S-Rod MH 6'3" (older green model) pop up fairly often, they are awesome TW rods.
  22. I "MIGHT" have mine this afternoon definitely this weekend (735)
