On the Garcia bait caster did you use dacron line? When I was 10-12 years old I used a very low end bait caster filled with tan dacron line, I learned to cast it a long way & not many bird's nests.
I have 2 Mitchell 300's that are used every time out, the oldest was purchased in 1957, still works fine. Also a 300A that is 30+ years old is used regularly.
BTW, the price in 1957 was $14.95.
I think as long as you cast with your right arm, you can learn to adjust to reeling with either hand. I have both RH & LH bait casters, I cast them both with my right arm then reel with which side the handle is on. Casting with my left arm ain't happening.
Fishin in an irrigation canal in northern Calif maybe 8 feet wide, 4 feet deep, using a (1963) Heddon Midget River Runt shallow diver, fast current, boom!, a 4 pounder grabbed it no more than 6 feet from where I was standing, nothing like that has happened before or since.
