  1. Plan on using rods and reels I already have. After some research I decided to go with 20# fluorocarbon. Have Sufix Advance coming. 220 yd. spool should be enough for me to try 3 different reels. Rods will be MHF although I am going to try a 6' 10" HF Quantum Tour Edition and/or Superlite. Not sure ATM what other 2 rods I will try first. I've read (or watched videos) with suggestions running from 6' to 7' 3". I have a Lightning 6' MHF at the short end and a 7' 3" Hammer on the long end with several in between. From what I gather a softer tip is beneficial. I will be learning from shore. I imagine many will say shorter will be better, but I don't see why a 7' 2" won't work as long as there is room for a roll cast. Is a shorter rod easier to learn with? I have a 6' 6" MHF XMLTi and a 6' 9" MHF Smallmouth. I am even thinking of trying an OG Tatula 7' MHR. Obviously the goal is to eventually be able to skip with any of my reels. However, I would like to minimize backlashes while learning as that can destroy fluorocarbon in a hurry. Many suggest an SV spooled reel. Or a DC. I'm thinking a Magforce 3D reel would also be an excellent option. How about a dual braked reel? I have at least one reel in each category. I could give a list of options, but don't know if that is necessary plus this post is already too long. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.
  2. Anyone familiar with this line of rods? Thinking of getting one during TW's sale. Would like to hear from actual users. Thanks.
  3. Thanks. Will order some. As Mr. Boomstick said...Daiwa reels aren't set up like you would many reels. Depress the thumb bar on a correctly set Daiwa, and letting the lure drop without thumbing the spool will result in a mess. Cast when set like that and it works great.
  4. I know nothing about the Sierra other than what I've read. Seems like the line is a good one. Of those I listed, the Invoker would be my first choice. A review of the 6'10" ML-EF. http://tackletour.com/reviewarkrodsivk610mlxs.html
  5. I have 1/4 lb. spools of 8# and 12# Big Game. Never heard of GG mono. OP explained it was a typo. Never seen that color mono.
  6. You are not the only guy in that canoe.
  7. Settle for a 6' 10" M-EF? TW has the Ark Invoker at $95...a $55 savings. My kind of sale. I have zero experience with those two models. I do like my older HMGs for a rod in the $100 price range. Okuma EVX 7' 1" MF is also on sale at TW...$103 rod for $73. The Daiwa Procyon is another possibility. I bought one for a brother-in-law a few years ago. It is his nicest rod as he buys (really) cheap stuff. BuCoo is always a nice option at this price range. May want to go MH as they fish a little light. At least the baitcast rods do. Never fished a spinning rod.
  8. I've had absolutely no problem with the Uni Knot. Occasionally I will use the Fish N Fool Knot....which is simply a Uni but going through the eye twice.
  9. You will get even better distance if you mount the reel 180 degrees from its current position. What is GG mono? How do I find some? Pretty. Looks highly visible. Would love to try some. Congratulations on the new reel. You are now well on your way to the dark side. My friend the Bait Monkey is smiling big time.
  10. I Personally I don't mind the purple. Much prefer it to white. I think you will like the rod.
  11. I use both. 1. At my age the rod arm can get tired with some lures such as a larger spinnerbait with Colorado blade(s). Especially if cranking it though tops of weeds. Lovely to be able to switch rod arm. 2. Some reels only come in right hand. (I started with left hand when going from spinning to baitcast.) 3. Regardless of whether or not a reel comes in both hands, if a good deal comes up on a reel I am interested in, the side the handle is on isn't all that important....although I prefer the more expensive reels purchased to be left hand models...but that doesn't always work out. 4. I just plain enjoy using both right and left hand reels. BTW, I bought my first baitcast reel at 61. First right hand reel was probably a couple years after that.
  12. No experience with the Triumph. Enjoy my HMGs.
  13. You can spool on as light as you want. Whether or not you will actually be able to use that line is another story. You will need to spool the line on tight, and keep it that way. I purchased a used reel that came with 30# Sufix. Spent about 20 minutes casting and removing tight spots. After than I had no problem. I just hold the line between my fingers every so often and keep pressure on it while retrieving a long cast. Some people use 20# with no problems. I've never tried that light.
  14. It is pretty much known all over the Internet that Falcons fish light. I have 3 of the older Experts, a Cara and an Original They all have a nice parabolic bend. Which is why my 7' M Cara was my Crankbait rod until I eventually broke down and bought a dedicated one. All my Medium Falcons are rated 1/4-1/2 oz. which is a lighter rating than many. I am actually coming to like rods that bend a little further down the blank such as Diawa Regulars. Hammer rods have a very similar action. At least the 2 I have. I seldom fish a jig. Yeah. Bad me. But I have other rods for jigs. OP, like everyone else is saying...the Lowrider at the same price is a given. Haven't used a Lowrider, but they are liked by several on here having experience with them.
  15. Absolutely agree spinning is the way to go for the fishing you are doing....and I use a baitcast reel whenever possible. Don't know the size of the creeks you fish, but if small...meaning short casts...and you want to try a baitcast reel, then I would learn to pitch. If you can pitch good, you will be very accurate and have no problem thumbing a spool on a regular cast. I would be remiss if I didn't point out that light lures with a baitcast reel isn't for the beginner. I've only tried pitching with a heavier jig. I can only cast comfortably down to a #5 Shad Rap (listed as 3/16 oz.). Light lures take skill even with the proper gear AFAIC. Guarantee you will get very frustrated if you try to learn using a baitcast reel using light lures...say 1/4 oz. or less. Best to start with a 1/2 oz. lure minimum. No experience with the Nasci, but love my Daiwa BG. EDIT: I found my BG for less than $100, but if you want to spend less I would still look at Daiwa offerings such as the Revros LT. Bought an earlier model as a birthday gift for a brother-in-law a few years ago. He is still using it and hasn't mentioned any problems with the reel yet.
  16. Step up the cranking. Save a few minutes on your daily workout.
  17. The spool does look narrow. My Quantum reel experience was zero. I now have 3 of the Icons and a Tour S3 so I will eventually be gaining a little experience. TT gave the Tour S3 a "Great" rating. PhishLI is the guilty party for me having purchased these reels.
  18. When I visit Florida I am in the same situation. Fishing from the back of a 14 foot dinghy. No motor and no depth finder. My rods are 7' with one 7'6" for my frog rod. Requires changing my casting stroke which gives me fits while getting used to it....again. Normally casting from shore standing up. Would be better if I liked spinning, but much prefer a casting rod in my hand.
  19. Can you do $140? I know you don't want 2 reels, but you could save one for later or sell the second. I have 2 of these in left hand. They are 2 of the 3 reels I used to learn to cast #5 Shad Raps. Dual braking. Super reels for the money. Been having fun looking in the Flea Market.
  20. First I've heard of them. Read through some of the specs on Okuma's website. Seems like a very nice reel. I have zero experience with an Okuma spinning reel, but have a couple of their casting reels. Like them a lot. Be the first to leave a review.
  21. That was your first mistake. I've got a few more than that, but have been collecting for the last 12 years. None in his price range, tho. My PXL Type R might be getting close although I did buy it on closeout for $200 less than the normal price.
  22. 18 combos? You are just getting started friend.
  23. Which is why I plan on dropping down to 50# once the 60# has to be changed.
