  1. My buddy Dan (not the one getting angry) feels the EXO reels (both 100 and 150) are the best Quantums ever made. He gets a chuckle out of reviewers who say it fell apart after only 2 outings and that will teach them to stick with a Curado the next time.
  2. Idea A and SV 105 HSL just arrived along with a few TW reel covers and a free T-shirt. Unfortunately I won't get out with the reels today. Maybe this weekend. Read a lot of good things about these reels. Can't wait to try them out. T-shirt will get used today.
  3. Exactly what I don't need. Another temptation. I'd say thanks for the link, but.......................................... I purchased a couple used Batson blank custom rods. The RainShadow is one of my favorites although not built on as high a quality blank. Congratulations on the new rod. Am looking forward to the upcoming review.
  4. It was pointed out in another thread that the Shimano Curado I is on sale at American Legacy for $119.99...normal price $179.99. Don't own one, but do a few other Shimano models. Should be an excellent reel at that price.
  5. I should have gotten on the computer yesterday afternoon. The 7'4" is now sold out.
  6. Oops. Dan is smalljaw67. Blame my confusion on the late hour this morning.
  7. Where did you find this rod? I kept waiting for Walmart to drop the price to $100 but it never happened before the rod got sold out. The 7'4" H is suppose to be a very versatile rod. Congrats on the new rod.
  8. Loved the video. Thanks. OP. I know next to nothing about physics. What I do know is that being smooth with a baitcast reel is of utmost importance. I have to agree with poisonokie. It is pretty easy to accomplish that smoothness with a side arm roll cast. Smoothness with an overhead cast is harder to achieve. Swinging the rod tip in a circle helps to eliminate the tendency to unload the rod tip by starting the forward motion too soon. Making a larger arc on the roll cast does indeed increase distance without the necessity of adding more power to the stroke. I personally feel adding more power to a roll cast is less likely to result in a backlash. I think my casts are nearly the same distance for either type of cast, but admit that I'll elect for the overhead whenever trying for ultimate distance. To me the problem with an overhead cast with a baitcast reel is the same as with a flyrod. The idea is to keep the rod tip moving in a straight line. One must wait for the rod to load at the end of the backcast before starting the forward cast. It is all about timing. For this reason I try to add a small roll with my overhead casts. However, doing so does hurt accuracy. But I spend less time removing overruns or backlashes because I have smoothed out the rod's reversal. The MagForce 3D is the absolute best braking I have ever used. Never have used a Shimano DC so can't claim it to be the absolute best ever. However.......................just like everyone has said.................practice can overcome most problems. Ultimately the best tool in your repertoire is an educated thumb.
  9. I can't agree with the ML or Medium power rod in the scenario you described. Yes, it can be done, but I would feel much more comfortable fishing a MH rod under those conditions. My brother-in-law lives in Florida and fishes Medium power spinning rods with 40# PowerPro. Tells me he hasn't lost a lure since switching to the PP. Of course, he goes to the snag if it won't break loose from his casting position. Your reel of choice has been deleted, so I don't know if you are looking for a spinning or baitcast outfit. I am going to guess it is a spinning reel since you plan on using 20# braid. I know nothing about the new Mojo series. You might want to check out ffo (Fisherman's Factory Outlet) for some great deals on Abu and Fenwick rods. I've never fished a Mojo, but if you are looking for a spinning outfit my first choice would be the 6'7" MHF Aetos spinning rod ffo has for $104.88 (regular price $179.95). Matter of fact I am considering buying one for my brother-in-law's birthday since he won't spend any kind of money on himself. I don't remember if I welcomed you to the forum before, but if not
  10. Obviously a tongue in cheek post. Purchased reel used last year. Spooled on what was left of a filler spool of 12# Siege Neon Tangerine. Lacked about an 1/8 or so from filling. Since 1/16 to 1/8 inch below the rim is how most manuals suggest filling reels, I decided to use it that way. Was getting better than average distance so the low fill wasn't hurting casting distance much. Reel has only been mounted on the Powell. Decided I wanted to take this reel with me next year on my visit to Florida. Because of that I decided to remove a few yards (so no chance of casting into the knot) and finished filling with some 55# Daiwa Samurai left over from filling another reel. John, I wasn't fishing bottom contact (although I probably should have been). Nor was I reeling fast, O-man. Thus it was taking some time to get the lure back. I always thought a Medium action rod would cast the furthest, but this XF rod really slings a lure. The combo makes even me look like I know what I am doing with a baitcast reel. This is my only experience with a Powell rod. Also purchased used. I wouldn't mind seeing Powell bringing back this line either. Tom, I don't have your power swing so no chance of me spooling the reel. I will leave that to you.
  11. Takes way too long to retrieve the lure before I can make another cast.
  12. Used Zillion PE Line Special?? I think most any of today's reels should handle braid. Pick a reel that floats your boat. Spool on your favorite braid. Go fishing.
  13. Deleted. Was thinking of the wrong thread.
  14. I agree for the reel, but where do you find the DHC-7 casting rods? It appears Pinnacle has discontinued this model as I could only find a couple on ebay. OP, the Pinnacle Primmus is very light at 5.9 oz. You can find one for $152 although it may cost a few bucks more for shipping. Another lighter reel I have is the Helios Air at 5.7 oz. These are both fine reels although they fly under the radar cuz they aren't Shimano, Daiwa, Lews, Abu. The Daiwa PX Type R weighs in at 5.8 oz.., but I wouldn't be using this reel with 12# line unless it were braid. I think the Bucoo rods are pretty light, but lots of rods seem pretty light to me in the store..
  15. Welcome to the forum. Nope. Do have a couple other Tatula rods. Very nice rods.
  16. 7' MHF 40# Braid of choice. Inexpensive = Sufix Performance Expensive = Daiwa Samurai Somewhere in the middle Sufix 832 or PowerPro
  17. Just let me say one thing..................................You can never have too many rods. Keeping rods to a minimum, I would add a crankbait rod as above poster suggested. Maybe two depending on whether or not you fish shallow and deep.
  18. I'm a fan of Fenwick. I have rods on both sides of the Elite Tech Bass series. If this series is anything like the Aetos or Smallmouth series then it is a very good rod for the money. Regardless of brand, a MHF is probably going to be your best bet for an all-around rod. There are quite a few good to excellent rods in the $100-$160 price range. My Aetos is a beautiful rod that is also quite sensitive. Would have to be used or on sale to get it for less than $160. The Okuma Helios is a $180 rod at most places. Can get the 7' MH at Amazon for $136.46. Don't know if shipping is free. Think it depends on the seller. I bought a rod that was less than $100 off Amazon that was sold by Reds Gear and shipping was free from that seller. Tackletour did a review of the Helios 7' M and gave it a "Great" rating.
  19. Glad you posted this. I was going to say that the OP doesn't need to justify wanting a Heavy rod. If the rod will load enough to make a decent cast with the desired lure, then use the rod. Obviously we aren't talking about throwing treble hook lures an a H-XF rod. I really enjoy using my 6' 10" HF for throwing a 1/2 oz. jig plus trailer. Sure this weight falls well within the range of a MH rod, but I like the 6' 10" rod and it casts this lure extremely well. Why should I limit myself to only using it in heavy cover or for casting 3/4 oz. or heavier lures?
  20. Pinnacle has a lot of models and I'd like to try them all. However, I already have way more reels than even I can justify. Guess I will have to explain to the wife that I have become a collector, and she can make some good money off them after I die. That way I can buy a bunch more.
  21. I often use backing on both spinning and baitcast reels. I can't see using a whole 300 yd filler spool of 6# line (even if it is low cost) when I can lay down a base with 12# mono and have enough 6# to finish filling 3 or 4 reels. 75-100 yards of 6# is more than enough for any bass I'll ever catch.
  22. Fly under the radar. No experience with their spinning reels, but there are at least 2 spinning reel reviews here. http://www.bassresource.com/tackle-reviews/ I picked up a Primmus baitcast reel in time to take it to Florida earlier this year. Looks great. Smooth. This reel and the Optimus Xi XS are hand-tuned at the factory. Spooled with 12# AN40. Mounted on a 7' ML Hurricane Redbone. Rod is rated for 3/8-3/4 oz. Casts a Yo-Zuri 3DB Popper (3/8 oz.) the proverbial country mile. I absolutely love this reel and eventually will buy another. BTW, got the Redbone at a local mom and pop store in Deland. Had two at $75 (a $100 rod). Should have gone back and bought the other. Very nice rods for the money. Another sleeper. EDIT: Glad to see that about the ***. Should have my new one in a couple days. Don't know if I will get to try it this year.
  23. I've been wanting to try the Hi Vis yellow braid. I have some 832 Ghost on one spinning rod that is pretty easy to see. I'm a big fan of Sufix Siege Neon Tangerine.
