  1. I like the few I have and often recommend the HMG in the $100 price range. Shipped a 7' MF spinning rod to Florida where it and 30# braid on a 2500 Sol landed the vast majority of the bass I caught there this year.
  2. It would appear not many have used Lew's spinning reels. I fall in that category. Also fall into the Daiwa fan category. EDIT: I have 14# Berkley Fireline to try based on suggestions from a couple members such as fishnkamp. Also have 6# Fins Windtamer to try on a finesse reel.
  3. Which? The reels? Or casting #5 Shad Raps?
  4. Maybe a Tatula LT if you are looking at a light reel. I put a BG1500 on my 6'7" Light and have a Procyon 2000 for my 6'10" ML. Pflueger has an excellent reputation. The Patriarch meets your budget. Or the Supreme XT for less. I have an older Stradic that is pretty nice. The Stradic FK is right at $200.
  5. Yes. A lighter spool will start up faster. If you can find a used ProLite, you wouldn't need to invest in another spool. ProLite was the finesse model. I have a couple older CarbonLites (the gold model), and have no problem casting 3/16 oz. Shad Raps. I'll be the first to admit I don't have the skill most guys on forums have.
  6. The reel I am thinking of began with a "T". Don't recall reading of a KastKing for finesse. EDIT: Tusrinoya XF50. Slightly larger than a Pixy and slightly heavier from what I read. Also the reviewer said it was easier to cast than a Pixy.
  7. Hopefully you've got a lot of money to spend on this combo. I assume lighter is better. Light cost money. An Aldebaran 50 ($420) weighs 4.7 oz. A Steez SV ($500) weighs 5.5 oz. A Revo MGX ($370) weighs 5.0 oz. A 2017 Shimano Scorpion ($268) weighs 6 oz. I would check the used market for a Pixy. Weight about 5.8 oz. Prices are much better on them now than a few years ago. There are other options, but the reels will weigh more. There is a $60 Chinese reel that was mentioned recently in a thread that the poster was impressed by. No idea of its specs. Review I read of the new Phenix Feather had it weighing less than 3 oz. Probably not going to get lighter than that from a factory rod. I know nothing of JDM rods, but there should be quite a few that would work for you.
  8. I am..................as of last week. Now I have to find time to use the ones I have.
  9. There is Flea Market here. https://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/forum/18-fishing-flea-market/ Also most fishing sites have a For Sale forum. Texas has a big one. Search for Texas fishing forum. You might find someone local to sell it to. Shipping runs $15-$30 plus depending on who you ship it through.
  10. Have picked up too much since last November. Zolo Deputy. Been out twice...I think. A new-2-me Steez on it. All around rod, but plan on using it for bottom contact lures. Zolo Toadface. Not had a reel on it yet. Toads and frogs. Maybe jigs. Villain 2.0 6'10" ML casting. No reel on it yet. Will be an all around finesse rod. Major Craft Benkei 672. Out once with a new BG 1500 and 5# braid. Suppose to be my Ned Rig. Liking it. Fantasista Regista 6'10" ML spinning. Arrived last week. The Procyon going on it was purchased last year and isn't spooled yet. Will be an all around finesse rod. Custom Drop Shot casting rod. No reel on it yet. New SV103 probably go on the Toadface. New-2-me Exsence DC. Went to Florida with me earlier this year. Loving it. Still have more casting reels than rods. My problem is I am working too many hours and when I do have time off it is either raining or I am sleeping......or both.
  11. And is the same rod/reel still available? Many of mine would require putting a Want ad in the Flea Market.
  12. Very painful. I feel for you brother. Twice I've dropped combos overboard, but got both back without jumping in. (Thank God cuz I can't swim!) Thanks to a boater coming too close to the fishing pier, I was forced off a flat rock I had been standing on that was only a couple inches above the waterline. All rocks along the shore. Slipped and fell breaking 2 pieces off a Falcon Expert...a $280 rod. I got it on closeout, but still very painful and it was a favorite at the time. Was also physically injured so that was a pain, too.
  13. Used to be 44+ miles. Been doing it for 32+ years. Accidents kill me. Hard to run around them. Back to fishing. Hope not to work 2nd job today. Getting up to 87 degrees. Brought two rods with me in hopes of stopping somewhere after work. I use a lot of 12# mono/co-polymer lines on my MH rods. I like AN40, Siege and Mean Green. You might want to look at the original Tatula 7'2" MHR for an all around rod. $150 rod that can be found for $110. I paid less than $100 for mine. The Dobyns Fury gets a lot of love in the $110 price range. Now if you are willing to spend $200 or so, there are a ton of excellent rods. I treated myself to an ALX Zolo Deputy for Christmas. It is a 7'1" MHF...another excellent all around rod. I prefer MH for most of my fishing. Some prefer Mediums. I did use a MF spinning rod with 30# braid this year to catch almost all of my bass while visiting relation in Florida. A first. I much prefer baitcast reels.
  14. Now you tell me! I figured with its 1/4-5/8 oz. rating that it might be a little too much for Ned Rigs. Course I don't know what the total weight is with the smaller heads.
  15. If $100 is too much, then check out the rods Catt mentioned. The Fury gets a lot of votes around here for a $110 rod. I like my Fenwick HMGs.
  16. Sure. I can tell you it is a very nice looking rod. Will let you know as soon as I get to use it.
  17. Tatula 7' MLR. Rating is in the Medium power range. The 7'2" MHR if throwing heavier lures. Love these rods. Should be able to find one for $110 or less. Paid less than $100 for all of mine with one exception.
  18. Check out the Major Craft Don Iovino 6'10" ML-XF. Also Major Craft is having a sale on the Corzza...$120 for $170 rod. I recently got a Benkei and it is a very nice looking rod for the money. Had it out once so far. Liking it. Also check out TackleTour's review of the Villain 2.0 6'10" ML spinning rod. The casting rod should be as good. Hope so because I have one (with no reel on it yet). Ordered it late one night not realizing it said VC instead of VS. I had wanted the spinning model. Glen's Army Navy has the casting model for $155.99. Haven't ever dealt with them so can't offer any feedback on the store. EDIT: Make sure you are looking at the 2.0 model. I didn't care for the original that much. The spinning rod I got wasn't bad, but I disliked the casting model.
  19. I understand that. I work a second job that sometimes comes to 16 hours a week if the shop needs me. Sometimes half that. Plus I spend over 10.5 hours a week traveling if I only work my regular job...and if there are no accidents....slightly over 51 miles each way. Obviously more when working the part-time job. I may not work weekends, but at 70 years old (and out of shape) I am too wiped out by the weekend to fish much. Welcome back to the world of people that have a life. Hopefully you will not only get to enjoy some time fishing, but riding your new motorcycle. I don't have any Lew's rods, but do have a few of their reels. From what I've been able to find, that combo should treat you well. Best of luck to you. Rained all weekend here, too.
  20. TW has only had the 4000 model for some time. Many other stores only have the 4000 although smaller sizes can be found. Not really looking to buy another spinning reel at this time. It would require me buying another rod. I was curious as to what Diawa planned to replace the Procyon with. Also why they dropped it since it seems to be a great reel. Maybe it was priced too low? I bought the 2000 on closeout. Plan on using fluorocarbon on it. Probably 8#, but 6# is a possibility as it is going on a ML rod.
  21. I guess I stated that incorrectly. I seldom fish a rod at its extremes. Instead I go to a different power rod. I look at a rod's ratings. My MLR and MR Tatula rods have ratings for what I consider one power higher. The MHR and MHF have what I consider MH ratings. My research on the 6'10" MHF suggests it does better using lures above its lowest rating. It is a new rod and hasn't had a reel on it yet. Haven't fished the others at either extreme of their ratings. Two Daiwa rods I have fished at the extreme listing were HF rods with 1/2 oz. low end ratings. The 7'6" Ziliion handled a 1/2 oz. hollow bodied frog well. The 7'4" Tatula not so well. The Tat does quite well with a 5/8 oz. frog. The Zillion 6'6" M-XF has a medium power rod rating. I didn't do well with 1/4 oz. lures.....but that is probably because it was when I was learning to use a baitcast reel and didn't have the necessary skill yet. Unfortunately I quickly came to prefer 7' or longer rods and it hasn't seen any use in some time. Something I would like to change this year. Reviews of the ALX rods are quite good. I treated myself to two as a Christmas present to myself. The Toadface still has the tags on it. I regret reporting that I haven't used the Deputy for what I bought it for yet....bottom contact. I went to the spot on the river where I try out new gear and keep up on my casting. Therefore it had a spinnerbait on it so I can't make a comment on its sensitivity. Reviews say it has very good sensitivity. Haven't tried it for accuracy yet. Some rods do better for me than others.
  22. I have a couple Zillion rods so am a bit biased towards them. Also any time I can get a $260 rod for $155 I'd consider it a no brainer unless the rod got bad reviews. I have a few Tatula rods and consider them a lot of bang for the buck. The Daiwa rods I have seem to fish a bit heavy. As for the others: Don't recall reading negative reviews of the Fury. Zodias is usually highly rated, but I have read a couple claiming them to be junk. Cashion doesn't get much attention here, but reviews I have read were all good with one exception. That would lead me to believe he got a bad example. Stuff happens in production. Might also be what happened to the two negative Zodias reviewers. Only wish I could afford a Helium 3. Appear to be a great value.
  23. Like the title says. Interested in whether or not Daiwa has a replacement for the Procyon. Review I read claims it was as good as some $300 reels. Very good drag and handled 8# fluorocarbon like other reels handle 6# mono. Begs the question why Daiwa dropped it.
  24. A little research turned up that the Quantum Burst has a composite frame. I wouldn't be using it as a frog reel. I gathered that the Kinetic PT is a pretty good reel at its price from a review I read written 5 years ago. The 20 lb. braid may be some of your problem. That light of a braid requires you to keep it pretty tight on the spool to keep it from digging in. Line may be a problem on the Browning Aggressor as well. I've not used that heavy of a fluorocarbon, but I know fluorocarbon lines have a fair amount of memory. Larger the line, the more the problem. Use a line conditioner on it. I assume toothy critters in your area is why you went with 15 lb. In my area I use a lot lighter. You bought a nice rod and reel. Add me to the list suggesting 40 lb. for braid. I use a lot of 12# monos and co-polymers. I like Siege, AN40, Big Game and McCoy Mean Green. I haven't tried all lines.....yet. Personally I prefer a mono or co-polymer for all around use. Izorline is a good line for abrasion resistance. However, it has more memory than most lines. Put it on my daughter's reel because she fishes Senkos all the time. She complained of the memory. Put on some Siege and haven't heard a complaint since.
