  1. I was 61 when I got my first low profile casting reel. I know of at least 2 people on here that only use spinning gear and I can guarantee they catch more fish than I do using both types. OP: If you were to turn out like me, then I would suggest you don't get a baitcast combo (unless financially well off). I've bought enough baitcasting rods and reels to be able to put a nice down payment on a bass boat in the (almost) 10 years since buying my first baitcast reel. And...no...I don't have a bass boat and probably never will considering my age and finances. I put too much money into baitcasting rods and reels.
  2. This makes a lot of sense. OP: I only have one Dobyns rod and it isn't a frog rod so I can't give an opinion based on actual experience. What I have read is that Dobyns are a bit heavier than a lot of rods and this confirms that. However, many people say the balance is very good making them feel lighter than they actually are. Does the rod have to be a Dobyns? The 7' HF Okuma Helios weighs less than 4 oz. (3.84 oz.) I really like my 7' MF.
  3. Call or email Fenwick. I received a used Hammer with the insert missing from the tiptop guide. They sent me a pack of 4....no charge. Even if Fenwick charges it shouldn't cost much.
  4. Not good. Received mine 2 days after getting an email from Pflueger saying they had been shipped. A tracking number was included. You may have to make another phone call. I hope you get them as that is a great deal on some very good reels.
  5. Not yet, but I picked up one before Christmas after reading your initial post. I have a Helios LP and two Helios Air reels. Like you mentioned in the above review link I find them to be among my group of reels that have excellent casting distance. Important to me since I fish from shore.
  6. I want a boat like yours! Also I can see I need a few more crankbait rods.
  7. I have 3000 yd. spools of 8# and 12#. Both go on baitcast reels. 8# on a couple spinning reels.
  8. Recently bought a reel from Japan Tackle. Shipping was quicker than I had thought it would be. Don't remember the number of days, but I am guessing around 4-5 days to arrive.
  9. My two arrived Wednesday. I think the spools spin a littler freer on these reels, than on several of my other reels. Gonna be awhile before I can try them out.
  10. Action appears to be the same on both rods. Power rating is different. See above for good advice.
  11. Yup. You are right. I guess I kind of ignored those two words. Not trying to knock Daiwa as slightly more than half my reels are Daiwas.
  12. Okay, but the ad says "lightest...reel Diawa has ever built". Not true. Lightest Tatula? Yes.
  13. Is the advertising on the Tatula 100 from Daiwa or from the store? Quote, "And with a feather weight of 6.9 ounces it may be the lightest, most fatigue free, reel Daiwa has ever built." That is nowhere near the lightest reel Daiwa has ever built. Thus it probably isn't the most fatigue free reel either.
  14. Will work just as good in fresh water fishing. My only Penn reel is an old 430SS. I like it a lot. Last year I bought the BG 1500 and a MC Benkei for Ned Rigs. The reel feels like a little tank and personally I am a fan of its looks. Unfortunately I only got out once with it last year as 1) I am working 2 jobs 2) rained a lot and 3) I spent a lot of time even on good weather weekends catching up on sleep. The BG is not a light reel, but seems to be very well built. The Okuma RTX is lighter and a few on here use it. I've only read good things about it. Penn is a brand seldom mentioned on this forum. Doesn't make it a bad reel, tho. I like Pflueger baitcast reels and they seldom get mentioned either. I know a lot of saltwater guys like Penn reels.
  15. I wish I had your attitude. I'd only have 3 or 4 rods instead of way too many.
  16. Since when does that stop anyone from jumping on a great deal? Didn't let it stop me and I've already got way too many reels. I think you will wind up thanking me.
  17. Wow. That sucks big time. Supreme XT LH $60. A $150 reel. Heck of a deal. Free shipping. http://www.pfluegerfishing.com/pflueger-reels-baitcast-reels-low-profile/pflueger-supreme-xt-low-profile-reel/1315405.html#start=1 Lightning Shock 7' or 7'6" HF for $50. Maybe you could find one on sale at a local Walmart. $110 plus cost of line. Should last you for years to come.
  18. I picked up a used Major Craft Benkei 6'7" L 2-piece spinning rod for Ned Rigs. This is a bass specific rod not a whippy JDM trout rod. Got a BG 1500 for it at a good price. From what I have read about the Feather series I think you will like it. Opinion is the Feather fishes light. Have never used either Shimano. Can't help with the Scorpion 70. I have read that spools can make a big difference, but the only one I've tried is a Presso spool in a Sol. At the time I tried it I didn't have any experience with lighter weights (below 1/4 oz.). Need to try it again to see how well my experiment worked out now that I can cast a true 3/16 oz. quite a ways.
  19. It's all in the rod. I have a 7'6" MH rated 3/8-1 1/4 oz. that won't cast a 1/2 oz. spinnerbait (which we all know weighs more) any further than my 7'4" HF rated 1/2-2 oz. will cast a 1/2 oz. frog (which is closer to 1/2 oz.). Maybe not as far. A known frog fisherman on another forum mentioned to me that he prefers the 1/2 oz. size frogs to the bigger sizes. He gets more strikes. I will try the 1/2 oz. Jackall Keara. Thanks.
  20. Now you are just trying to make me feel bad. I didn't realize I could get another 10% off. Maybe I should order another couple reels. I have 3 of the older blue models. Not only nice looking, but performance is very good. The one set up with 40# braid that I use mostly for casting unweighted 10" ribbontail worms has about the lowest brake setting of any of my reels.
  21. I know not a lot of people use Pflueger casting reels (at least on enthusiast forums), but I've enjoyed the ones I have. If you are looking into getting into baitcast reels without spending much, then I would suggest the Supreme XT. Or if you just want another good baitcast reel at a super low price there are several here that fit the bill. http://www.pfluegerfishing.com/pflueger-reels-baitcast-reels-low-profile/ EDIT: Free shipping over $50. I am talking over 50% off some reels.
  22. Holy Moly!!!!!!!!!! Pflueger has them for $80....a $200 reel. You should grab 3 or 4 while you can. The Supreme XT for $60 ($150 list) and the Patriarch XT for $100 ($250 list). Free shipping over $50. Wow. And I finally gave in and bought the Supreme XT for $120 a little over a month ago. Well....I had to do it. The Bait Monkey had me in a headlock. Ordered another Supreme XT and a Patriarch. I already have 3 of the older blue Patriarch XTs.
  23. Copy and paste this on your favorite search engine: casting reel maintenance on youtube Quite a bit will come up for your entertainment pleasure. Even with "casting" in the search a lot comes up for spinning reels as well. Pick up a copy of Fishing Reel 101 Care and Maintenance. Contains quite a few pictures. You were given some nice reels. All will benefit from a good cleaning and proper lubing. There used to be a thread on another forum (about 6 pages long) with many posts giving options for upgrading Abu round reels. EDIT: And where to find spare parts.
  24. Easy. Naturally the rod and its lure rating is going to determine which weights to use. For my dedicated frog rod I bought the Tatula 7'4" which is rated 1/2-2 oz. As you might guess....it doesn't launch a 1/2 oz. hollow-bodied frog. Rod currently has 60# braid on it and does okay with 1/2 oz., but much better with a 5/8 oz. frog. Never having fished frogs before, I went with the opinions of the majority and currently have a 7.0:1 reel on it. Specifically a Curado 201E7. Going to see how the 60# works out, but thinking I may drop down to 50# braid in a few years when it needs replacing. I'm thinking you mean Heavy power. And yeah, I would be using a MH rod for 1/2 oz. if it wasn't for throwing back into lily pads and other garbage.
