I use MHF casting rods with 40# braid spooled to cast unweighted 10" ribbontails into slop all the time.

Love casting reels, but like you when I think 'arsenal', I think rods.

I'm another that feels Okuma reels are underrated. Especially am fond of my Helios Air reels. Really can't comment on the Hakai. Had it and a new Zillion out for a short time one day. Definitely need more time with it before making any comments on how well it performs. Not going to fish it for 15 minutes and tell you it's the best thing since cinnamon buns! Hakai purchased used. Can't budge the line size dial.

I'm about 6.7:1 ration BC versus spinning. Grew up with spinning. Tried BC in 2009. Never looked back. I also bank fish, but only in open areas. Trees and bushes, not water cover. Prefer 7' or longer BC. Spinning 7' or shorter.

I have all three, but none are current models. Personally feel it's a stretch to say one is far superior than the other two. There are several things that can contribute to a reel feeling superior in an individual's mind. Among them are your casting stroke where one brake type may be a better fit to your style of casting. Were you comparing the reels on the same rod using the same lure and same line? Line, lure, lure weight, rod length, rod power, etc. can all make a difference in how a reel's performance feels in hand. Ergonomics bothers some so it can also fit into the equation.

My only experience with P-Line was with 10# FloroClear. It was not a happy experience. Maybe I got a bad spool. If I had to worry about abrasion resistance, their CXX is one of three that I would look at first. The previously mentioned lines are all good. I like Siege, McCoy Mean Green, and Izorline XXX of the lines currently in production. I have a lot of AN40 on hand. No idea why it went out of production. Line is probably not something a person would consider a rabbit hole, but there are many, many good lines to be tried. I have more on hand than I will ever use.

Don't know how we accomplished it, but back in my youth my dad, two brothers and I caught thousands of fish on 8# and 4# XL using Mitchell spinning reels. I use braid in slop. Don't know if it was because of the light lure, but when I tried 10# 832 on a (7'2") rod rated down to 1/16 oz., I was not impressed with distance. However, I did not try another reel on that rod with mono spooled on it. I have other spinning reels to try braid on (and different power rods), but guess I am biased because so far I prefer mono. In my youth I fished worms, crayfish, Beetlespins, Roostertails, leeches and grubs 99% of the time. We fished for whatever swam in the water (except for humanoids...they refused to bite).

Same here. All but one of my most expensive rods were bought used at about 50% of the original price. The new one was purchased on closeout at about 25% of the original price.

My first Patriarch XT was at half retail. Not positive, but think the second one as well. The third one (in excellent condition) was 74% below retail. Personally I was glad that many don't believe that Pflueger could make decent baitcast reels. Better for me.

New if on closeout with a great price. Used otherwise, but must also be at a great price. Have more used than new. I also collected quite a few Daiwa casting reels and a few Daiwa spinning reels that were out of production. Same for rods. I paid full price only once, and that was a rod specifically made for DSG and I was just starting out with casting. Have given it away.

I never got that much extra distance, but like you, I found I could usually lower the brake and get same distance with less effort.

Whoa! That's downright filthy. I only saw plastic water bottles and foam coffee cups...as a general rule...in the river I used to fish. Definitely neither of those items.

casts_by_fly is 'The Man' when it comes to recommending Falcon rods. I'm also a fan of Falcon rods, but have nowhere near his experience with them. Quote from one of his posts: Finesse jig/Topwater (6'10" MH/MF)- As the name implies, this rod was designed for light finesse jigs in clear Ozark lakes. The first thing about this rod- its light weight. In expert form it comes in at 3.8 oz but feels even lighter. The top of the rod is really light so it feels like you're holding nothing at all. It's rated 3/16-5/8 except in the Expert (which I have) which is rated 1/4-3/4. I think on the Expert model that 3/16-5/8 is probably right.

Mono or Co-Polymer for those because I grew up using mono. Only use braid for casting into slop. Seldom fish a jig. I'd have to try jigs for awhile before deciding if I thought fluoro would increase sensitivity. Tried a leader once. Not fond of them.

I have one reel that I had ceramic bearings installed in. DVT installed a set I got at half price because the seller didn't like the noise they made. Mike also tuned the reel. I personally don't mind the little extra noise on the cast. I feel it is actually helpful because it helps me know when the spool is slowing down prior to the lure's touch down. Have the same model reel that Mike only cleaned. Can't really tell a difference between them. Curado 51Es.

I can put up with a little tip heavy. I bought a 7'7" composite crankbait casting rod. Was on closeout and hard to pass up such a deal. At that time I didn't have a 'crankbait' rod (used MF rods). I've used it once. If I want to work out, I'll go to the gym and exercise most of my muscles instead of only the wrist of my rod arm.

Dobyns rods are similar. Often a little heavier than like models, but better balanced making them feel lighter. Wish I needed another couple rods. Excellent price. Enjoy. And, yeah, it sucks that a $329 rod doesn't feel as nice as an $88 rod. That shouldn't happen.

BPS website calls it a spinnerbait rod.......so yeah.

I see the Revros has been mentioned a few times. No personal experience, but I bought one a few years ago as a birthday present for a B-I-L. I seriously doubt the reel has ever been cleaned or lubed. He's still using it and hasn't mentioned any problems with it.

Anyone who says fluorocarbon lines have little to no stretch has 1) never read TT's fluorocarbon line comparison reviews, and 2) never had to break fluorocarbon line from a snag. I tried 10# P-Line Fluoroclear on a baitcast reel for a day (while visiting Florida). Put the reel away and changed the line when I got back home. It was breaking way too easy. Maybe a bad spool? I've successfully use 8# mono and co-polymer in several brands with no such problem. I've read excellent things about CCX and Izorline Platinum for having great abrasion resistance. I have some of each to test, but it will be on casting reels. I have doubts that 10# would handle very well on a spinning reel. I also have some Izorline XXX Super Co-Polymer to test in hopes it will be the best of both worlds...handle well and have good abrasion.

Don't mean any disrespect, but I've always figured that anyone spending that kind of money on rods has already done his research and needs no help from anyone. By the time you've researched what rods to buy, you already know what techniques they do well. As far as redundancy is concerned...what is wrong with that? I've got plenty of them.
