  1. My son just bought a 15' tin boat and asked me for my advice on a Humminbird, so I thought I would check here for him. He would like to do this as cheap as he can, but he would like: Navionics capable GPS Color preferred, but black and white are ok if he can get the first 2 options. If we can find what he wants where is the best place to buy it? Thanks for your help.
  2. I have a 24 volt trolling motor system with a 2 bank charger connected to the 2 batteries, so that is covered. I do not use the gas engine too often because of where we fish so a couple of times the starting battery has been dead when I have needed it, I suppose that I drain it down from lack of use and it runs my 898 and the radio. Is there a single bank charger that I can connect to the starting battery like the 2 bank charger to the trolling motor batteries? What I mean is something that attaches to the posts (Not clamps like a battery charger) and they will not fall off, I could mount it, and the cord could be tucked away. Something small that can be mounted but easily accessed when needed. I could just plug it in when Iam charging my trolling motor batteries and not have to worry about any of them not being charged when I go out. Thanks-Arlo
  3. I have a Auto Pilot and I have been thinking about a I Pilot. My boat is a 1994 Alumacraft Classic Deluxe 16' 8" and weighs around 800#. Which I Pilot would be the best choice for my boat? Shaft length? Pounds of thrust? Right now it is set up as a 24 volt system, would I need to keep it that way? Any idea what my Auto Pilot would be worth? Thanks- Alumabass
  4. Looking for a sharpener for both home and outdoor knives, straight blades and serrated blades. What are the best choices for both manual and electric? Thanks- Arlo
  5. I have a 1994 Alumacraft Classic Deluxe that I would like to make a little more comfy for me up front when Iam operating the trolling motor so I have been thinking about a butt seat and a adjustable post. How do I determine what post I need so it will plug into the floor? How do I determine which length I will need? I tried putting putting a butt seat on the only adjustable post that I have, but it was too short and made it more uncomfortable. I would also like to buy a adjustable post to match the one that I have so all 3 seats in the boat would have some adjustment. The post I have is what Iam assuming is a air adjustment? It has a lever on the bottom to raise/lower when you are sitting on it. Where is the best place to buy the posts and a butt seat? I like to sit when we are walleye fishing, but I like to stand when we are bass casting. Thanks for any and all help.
  6. I bought the same unit...........got the same disc...........had the same reaction. Called HB and they sent a manual pronto with no hassle. Just give them a call they are good people.
  7. caught 11 largemouth yesterday in 4 hours, and missed 2 also! I ran a 3 pound average, not bad for South Dakota and a lake that I have only fished 3 times. Everything was caught with a chrome Red Eye Shad with blood red hooks. I was going to go out again today, but I thought this was a great way to end the season and the boat goes into hibernation tomorrow. The largest one ran just shy of 4 pounds, strange thing, its lower lip was broken in the middle, but seemed to be healthy. Anyone ever seen this before? How would something like this happen? Thanks for reading- Arlo
  8. are they a good rod? The local sporting goods store has a 7' spinnerbait/worm and a 7' 2" jig/worm each are priced at $59.99 closeout. Just curious if this is a good price? I have been looking for a Abu Garcia Vendetta rod, but maybe one of these will do. Thanks- Arlo
  9. we are not going for a year, but hey I want to be prepared! Any tips on fishing there? Iam from South Dakota so my casting equipment is based on 10 pound mono, do I need to do something different? We will be on a houseboat, but will have another boat along for some fun and fishing. From what I have read it looks like stripers, smallmouth, and largemouth so it looks like it should be a good time if we can get on the fish. Iam sure I will have more questions. Thanks- Arlo
  10. Just looking for any tips or information on this area and the fishery. We will not be going there for another year, but I want to be as prepared as I can when we do arrive. We will be renting a houseboat for 1 week and we will have another fishing boat along as well. One of my questions for now is about line, we fish in South Dakota and Minnesota most of the time so 10 pund test mono has always been fine, do I need to upscale that for fishing there? Iam sure that I will have more questions along the way. Thanks- Arlo
  11. What do you guys use? The Canvas guy told me that my boat cover is probably more cotton than anything else because it is from 1992. He suggested 3 options: Camp Dry-Which seems to only come in small cans Canvac-Which I cannot find Raincheck-Which I cannot find and a last resort-Thompsons water seal Any other ideas? Thanks-Arlo
  12. Any advice on where to get one? Thinking about putting one on my 1992 Alumacraft 16' Classic Deluxe. I know that casting for the bass it will be a problem, but I can take it off for those days. We also do some walleye fishing up here and it would be nice to have on the baking hot sun days, or the drizzly rain days when we are pulling bouncers. Thanks
  13. I have always used monofiliment fishing line, but since I have joined this forum, and learned alot of information I have been thinking about switching to braid, but I need a little advice. Do you switch everything for braid, or are there monofilament applications and braid applications? I seem to fish topwater, my favorite bait is the tornado, but I will do a Spook, Spro Frog, and a Buzzbait. Iam trying to expand into plastics using worms and tubes. I will also cast hardbaits. I have three rods set up with baitcasting reels. I have each rod a reel setup (or at least in my mind) for the above 3 lure categories. What would you use braid with, and what would you use mono with? And what test line in either category, or should I just stick with using mono? Thanks- Arlo
  14. LEFT handed baitcast reel for my wife? We bought one of those inexpensive Pflueger matching pink rod a reel combos at BPS this spring, but come to find out she needs a lefty. We stood in the store and went over this and of course I was wrong..........................but now I'm not wrong anymore! She is just learning the baitcaster so I don't want anything too expensive, and I will just pair it with the rod she already has. Thanks
  15. never caught one, but Iam sure looking forward to it, but I could use some advice. Iam from South Dakota and we are heading for Springfield, SD next weekend to camp and fish smallies on the Missouri River. It sounds as though there are some channels that run inland off of the river. How would you approach my upcoming smallie trip? Where to fish, and what to use this time of the year? Sure would be nice to hook a few. Thanks- Arlo
  16. anyone know where I can find them? I only need 3, cannonball, or bank, does not really matter. Had everything laying around to make 3 homemade bouys that they had in the last issue of Bass Master.................except the sinkers. 8-) Thanks
  17. Yes Sir, I have the wheel chocks, just looking for the donut for the front jack wheel. Thanks
  18. Anyone know where I can get one of these? I have checked 2 Wally Worlds and our local marine shop with no luck. This would be the round dished contraption that your trailer jack wheel would set in when your trailer is parked...........I hope that is a clear picture. I don't know if they are all plastic, or if there is a better version available? Thanks-Arlo
  19. I got a new used boat last year, my speedo did not work either. I have the same setup as you, but I did not get lucky that the hole in the engine was plugged, I replaced the vac tubing from the engine to the speedometer, now it works. We tried to push 100 psi through the tube to blow out whatever was in there, but it did not budge. I was like you, I knew the speedometer was not accurate, but I wanted it to work, now it does and now I can see how far off it is with the 898c si with gps. Glad you fixed yours the simple way.
  20. gone fishin' instead of just a wishin'..................sure do
  21. Iam looking for a metal or plastic cabinet/box that is around 12" x 12", I can deviate from this measurement some. Probably not too thick, somewhere from 3" to 5", and a couple of shelves in it. I want to install this in the boat for fishing glasses, some small tools, stuff like that. I cannot locate anything online, so I thought I would ask here and use a few more brains than I have. My first thought was like a lock box with a hinged lid that I could turn to create a cabinet, but the ones I have found are too small. The other idea I had was something like a first aid kit that hangs on the wall. I know, crazy question, but I had to ask. Thanks-Arlo
  22. Yes, please, let us know, I just did this yesterday and Iam not real satisfied with the way the wire is run from the trolling motor to the Bird.
  23. We use the term "lunker" for a big fish. The other term we use is "Beadaco Creek" (SP), we all remember this from a Old Mill beer commercial from years ago. We will be in the boat and someone is hook :)ed up and then they will say "he is going to do a Beadaco Creek" and the fish will either tail walk or just have a good jump, then everyone in the boat is yee hawin'!
  24. Are these the same, or are they different? I do not have either in my boat, do I need to? We fish smaller lakes, no big water...............as of yet. Are there hand held models available, or what is my cheapest option? Thanks
