Welcome aboard!
Start with spinning, you can do most everything and catch most anything
on spinning gear. Grab a baitcaster when you want, if you want. I use both,
but spinning for most everything.
Have had great success with Gamakatsu Split/Drop shot hooks from 4 to 2/0,
with 1 and 1/0 the sweet spot for me. Also use the Wide Gap Finesse in same
range. Have tried Hyabusa from TW, while sharp, found the muscle models to
break. Tried other brands, always seem to return to Gammy.

As a father of four sons, I can't imagine losing one. Though I have feared it.
Please accept my sincerest condolences and hopes for brighter days to come
once the clouds of grief become less ... though they'll never be gone.
