  1. That was very cool. Definitely need to try the sous vide thing. And that would be reverse searing @slonezp was talking about.
  2. I'm watching it now, but funny, I read this guy's article on sous vide steaks at seriouseats.com this morning!!
  3. We've been experimenting with letting steaks "marinate" in salt and pepper (rubbed in) out on the countertop. Far enough back that our lab can't get to it. Yeah, there's a reason for that. I watched a show on best steak eats in America a number of years back and one place in Florida stores their steaks for days at room temp in a room filled with ancient blocks of salt. We're talking aaaaancient - millions of years ancient. So the idea above from @Dorado to use Himalayan Pink Salt is quite intriguing. Anyhoo, the S&P thing is what Ruth's Cris does, then the post-marinating in melted butter. Gosh this whole thing is making me hungry...
  4. Since our winters down here haven't been so extreme, we've used our grill on the porch a number of times
  5. If anybody happens to go to BPS for the sale, can you inform whether or not Yamamoto Senkos are part of the sale? I notice not everything on sale gets put in the flyer, so just wondering... Not holding my breath they will be. Oh, picked up some Pond Magic spinnerbaits at Walmart yesterday...Just under $3 each. (Not the micro) Checked BPS pricing on same ones: $4.29. Really?! Hard to buy any bait there anymore unless it is on a good sale.
  6. I shoulda known that...
  7. Iiiinteresting. I thought you weren't supposed to cut or poke holes in the steak, to preserve the juices?
  8. Right, your post was spot-on in that sense, though.
  9. Sounds absolutely delish. Unfortunately, my wife hates the charcoal grill taste. (I know, what's wrong with her!?) But she's a heck of a cook on a gas grill!!
  10. Here's a pic of a sous vide'd steak on the left, and an iron skillet steak on the right.
  11. Agree. I think @TOXIC meant "none of" when he typed in "-0- of", not "off".
  12. Nice review! Good pix to go with it.
  13. Gonna have to look up reverse sear. I assume that means you slow cook the steak then do a high heat sear to seal it up? (yeah, I didn't look it up yet...)
  14. Yes. At least once This "good day" in particular came after days of rain... Water table was crazy high, winds up, overcast, I was only one there that day. Boat launch was flooded, but I had my yak and was determined to get out. There's a covered "canal" between two bodies of water. I had a gut feeling there were bass feeding there, at the mouth where the water was "spilling" out. Parked my yak against the rocks nearby and cast a 3/8 oz wacky jig with a green pumpkin/gold flake Trick worm. Don't remember how many I caught, but dang, it payed off. Funny you mention the topic "gut feeling". I was telling one of my sons just this week that I had a "gut feeling" this is going to be a really good fishing year for us. While it hasn't truly begun, I truly believe it will be great. I've had other gut feelings out there that apparently were nothing more than gas, LOL. Those didn't pay off.
  15. Ok everyone. I know there are some great cooks here on the forum (there has to be with over 50,000 members). One of the best steaks I ever had was at Ruth's Cris on our wedding anniversary. Since then, we've looked up how to cook them and my wife made some incredible ribeyes using salt, pepper, butter and some TLC Ruth's Cris style over a low heat on the grill. Was reading this AM about boiling a steak and the sous vide method came up. Holy cow that looks awesome. Would love to try it. So I throw this out to y'all. Do you have a great way to cook a steak? And if so, care to share the deets? I'm partial to medium rare, fwiw.
  16. Are you fishing a mojo rig?
  17. When I'm back in the market, I will. Thanks, @Wayne P. Though I can in no way afford one, I've been eyeing Lowrance models under $600 with down scan and some with SI. Would love to plot the lakes I fish as there are zero helpful charts from Newport News for Lee Hall and Harwood's Mill. All I got is some old barely legible map for $3 from the Ranger station. Not very helpful...but a chart plotting setup would certainly be!
  18. Maybe, then, it's something to avoid in my waters? Down here in the Tidewater area of VA, we have no smallies, only large mouth...
  19. Geez, @MikeWright, you killed it for me!! I don't use lures for bluegill! I use worms or trout pellets or Berkeley maggot-like things for BG. And I LOVE to target them with a long pole (no reel). Man that's fun And moreso when a nice sized bass decides to feast.
  20. That's good info to know. I've been pondering putting together a FnF rig and will have to file this for future thought.
  21. Guess that puts Garmin out of contention when I'm back on the market for a good fish-finding unit.
  22. Now there's a new reason for spinning gear superiority!!! LOL. Good on ya, mate!
  23. If I was in the market, I'd strongly consider one... They handle well in store, but I've never owned one and, consequently, fished one. @Goose52 knows the reel well, though. Take his word for it. I'm wondering if BPS is finally winding down the reel to replace it in 2017. Seeing they've rolled out the new Platinum series and Titanium series, I could see a new "metal" coming in to replace the PQ. Maybe the "Tungsten" or "Lead"...just kidding on the names, but the theory stands! Oooops, never mind. I see there's now the PQ 2!! Missed that the other day when I was browsing.
  24. Welcome aboard, David! I never fished baitcasters until the 2000s...so no help there Never really interested in them until then. And now that I've gone there, I've gone back to mainly spinning!
  25. Welcome aboard, @Ze Miguel!
