  1. I could never provide a speech that short in duration. Maybe elaborate on how one maximizes the range of motion in the wrist and how it is critical so you don't cast with the thump in an upright position but rotate the hand over so the palm is down to maximize on that range of motion. You could speak on what factors effect the line's ability to come off the spool at rate that is in relationship to the speed of the spool as it rotates to prevent overrun. That's good for half an hour right there.
  2. Speed Trap for sure ! Norman's Thin N but the bill may not be as good for wood.
  3. For really snaggy situations, try hollow core pencil lead and crimp it on after you cut a piece to match the weight you need. Use a swivel to prevent the dreaded line twist. Steelheaders have used this for years.
  4. Weather.com !!!!! Corp of Engineers (water levels ) Bonniville Power Authority ( For Columbia River flow ) The rest of the other's lists are great.
  5. Sounds like you are a happy camper. That's great ! Give that glass rod a try with your diving cranks when the opportunity presents itself. The Lamiglas rods run 3 double foot and 6 singles for guides. The less guide weight, wrap and epoxy on the upper blank the better. Glad to hear things worked out.
  6. It's a Luhr Jensen bait designed by Lee Sisson. If you look at the Radar 10 which is still in production, you can see the similarity. Sisson influenced baits have a signature style color scheme.
  7. Okay, the bait did catch some fish and the fish that bit it, ate it so i'm going to continue to use it and get a better idea how it can produce. It's the Strike King Magic Glass Minnow. I guess they come pre-rigged as a spinner bait and replacement bodies. I used the bodies on a football jig head. They are made of that elastek type material which I don't care for but the set up was an exposed hook like a tube or grub so it wasn't a problem. They are indestructable so if you don't hang up and break off they will last all day. I'm sure i'm not the first to use this bait for smallies but it's new to me.
  8. I watched a local syndicated show several months ago and the host fished a redfish bait and it was very productive. I'm going to test it tomorrow ( I know, one outing is not a fair test) and see if it is the real deal. TV can lie. If it's a dud i'll comment. If it's a killer I will never tell. Just kidding. I'll post.
  9. My local school district just dismissed the high school principal because the results of the state's testing process that measures the what students learning levels are, was low and they might loose federal grant money in the district. Some districts terminated almost entire staffs. This was a tragedy. The man was an excellent educator and administrator. The reason for low scores ? Get up and eat breakfast and prepare for a day of learning PARENT ? NO. Get kids to school on time PARENT ? NO. Have students do homework and required projects PARENT ? NO. Provide consequences for poor grades PARENT ? NO. Lead by example PARENT ? YES. Unfortunately the example is an example of apathy and entitlement, lack of respect for authority and reinforcement of defiance, lack of personal accountability and self. So much for sociology according to me.
  10. For a full day I bring only the rods I need not to exceed 5. I use a soft side tackle bag so I don't ding the host's boat. I bring food and snacks for two, always. I cover gas and set that amount up front. I'm careful to hook lures on keeprs and not hit any gelcoat or snag seats. I offer my tackle for the host to use if it looks like he doesn't have an item that get's bit as well as mine is. I try not track crud in the boat , drip blood in the boat etc. Someone said he leads by example. Good attitude to have. Thanks for asking the question !
  11. I'd take my three year old grand-daughter to a pay to fish trout pond and let her catch em' until I went broke. I just might do that anyway.
  12. I don't know there is a bait I want to fish so fast I need a 7.1 to 1 ratio. I do like the fact they get a bait back to you once out of the strike zone so you can make another presentation. For me, that's the true benefit.
  13. The Hawks have a winning streak of one !! Actually the big boys on the D-line looked great. My Ducks beat Tennessee. We are on a mini roll.
  14. Buy her some nice flowers and take her out for pizza. Best advice you'll get.
  15. Same here. When I started, RH reels were all we had. You switched hands. I am determined to use left hand reels on my pitching rods however and it's taking time to get the reeling part smoothed out. It's still awkward.
  16. Vibration, sound, displacement, movement, color (silhouette ) and scent. Any artificial that produces a combo of the " right stuff " to trigger a response will at some time or another get bit.
  17. You are missing the point. Lead is introduced into the environment one particle at a time. There are a reported two hundred and fifty million vehicles on the road today in the US. Multiply that by four wheels per vehicle, average. Grit, sand, washing, etc. remove particles of lead which are introduced into the environment and through run off, into the water supply. My point is, don't make lead in fishing lures or weights the demon of the environment and not address the other applications of lead pollution. If one will legislate a ban on lead in sporting goods then apply it elsewhere. They don't put lead weights in the water ? The EPA removed over 260 lead based batteries from one cove at lake Powell in the early 80's.
  18. How can any state ban lead in fishing products and still allow the use of lead weights for motor vehicle wheel balancing ? If lead is banned, there must be equity and ban lead in other applications. If we are not careful any jig you break off will eventually be covered in zebra mussels. Where does it end ?
  19. Praying for your Dad, you and your family Deb.
  20. Let me qualify the weight issue and i'll shut up. I made several comparisons because the scale I used is a cheap import but I used the same scale for each rod. If I need to lighten up the load on the old wrist for a day of casting, I can take my watch off, it weighs 2.8 ounces.
  21. hey f&p, do you have both? if so, you can share how they compare? there's lots of rumors that the blanks are the same and so i'm curious. Yes I own both. I have not seen the Excel glass rod built and don't work for Lamiglas. BUT, I did mic the blanks as best as I could and would you believe they have the same diameters at 30 inches, 48 inches and 66 inches. I placed both rods side by side and did a press flex check and the arc of the flex is as close to the same as I can tell. The placement of the guides is slightly different and the guides them selves are different and that will or should alter the flex slightly I would think. I honestly cannot tell the difference between the two blanks even though the SR705 has a fore grip and different guide placement. I have fished the Excel ( I have two ) since March for all my cranking and like them just fine. I have not tried the glass for spooks because I have an older Certified Pro XC704 that has worked really well for me. I'm open to experimentation though. That's the fun of this sport. I hope the OP shares his thoughts after he gets his Powell. Powell makes a very fine rod and I hope he likes it and the benefits of glass.
  22. I like the Baltimore Colts to go all the way. What's that honey? They moved ? Shula retired? Never mind. :-[
  23. There is a huge difference. Glass blanks are large diameter thin wall blanks and generally have a fast taper. Graphite blanks are generally a smaller diameter, thicker wall with a more gradual taper. Graphite blanks that have that slower parabolic flex and a slower reaction are thinner walled. Composite blanks marry glass tips to graphite butt sections and they can be a bit lighter and a somewhat more sensitive. Glass is less dense than graphite so it does not transmit vibration as well but high quality glass is surprisingly sensitive. That slower action and broader flex makes for a rod that acts as a shock absorber and really helps treble hooked baits from tearing out of a fish's tissue. Glass rods are easy to cast because they load so well. Heavy ? My Lamiglas XL705G weighs on my digital scale at 5.6 ounces. The SR705R weighs 5.4 ounces. A Fenwick Elite Tech composite spinnerbait rod weighed in at 5.8 OZ and a Mojo spinnerbait rod weighed 5.2 ounces and finally a Loomis 7' CBR rod weighed at 4.6 ounces. I hope this sheds some light and helps you in your selection.
  24. I just installed some LED lights in my rod locker and storage locker lids. What a brite idea. Anyone else done this to your rig ?
