My son and I had a great trip to the Smith Mountain State Park, with two solid days of winter fishing on the lake. As expected, the bite was slow but we did catch fish. Finally figured out that the big greenies wanted an ITO jerk bait, and they only ate for about a two hour window in the mid morning... Everything else we threw was not attractive to the sluggish LM. Water temp was about 45, rising to 47 by afternoon. Hunted typical winter patterns, changes in depth, humps, bluffs, and points. Found them on the leeward side of windblown points. Water gin clear and surroundings were simply breathtaking. We'll be returning to this great lake.
