From my experience, buy what best fits the bodies of water you fish. If it's smaller lakes an rivers where distance traveled isn't am issue, go tin. If you fish big water that can get dangerous in a hurry, go glass. I live in Illinois where a lot of our lakes are horsepower limited, so my 19ft skeeter with with a 175 is overkill and keeps me off a lot of water. But, I can take my glass on the Mississippi River and Grand Traverse Bay and feel safe.
Chris lane won an elite event using a black/blue stick bait. He was also throwing a jig, but those were the 2 baits he used. I don't see them wacky rigging them, but I always see or read about them throwing weighted t rig stick baits.
I used to buy every color under the sun. Now I pretty much buy 2 pre made skirts, the sweet craw from Siebert an peas an carrots from Boss. I still have have a ton of jigs i made that look really cool, but they don't catch fish as well as those pre mades I buy.
I have one, minus the poles. Took me awhile to get the plate where it wanted to be. Once I did, I'd was hitting 66 by myself with low fuel and no gear. With a Co angler, full gear, and full tanks. I'm consistent 61-63 mph. Mine seems to run the strongest at 5,200 rpm. The rough water ride is nothing short of spectacular. And the handling is great as well. Have fun and enjoy
I have a 2014 skeeter with a Yamaha that has been trouble free for the short time I have owned it.
I also have a 2002 tracker with a 40 mercury and since rhe day I bought it new in 2002, it's always had something wrong with it. I ended up just giving it to my dad, what a pile of dung that thing was.
Last year I had great success on a River2Sea S waver 168S when it rained. Not sure what it was, I'd glide it a couple inches under the service and it produced. I also like burning a spinnerbait or swimjig
Whoever is telling you that the V-Max has many issues must be a Mercury salesmen. I love mine, and would take it over any Mercury iv owned in the past. It does like to chug the gas and oil though
I have one and love it. Got it dirt cheap from bass pro when they were on sale, and came with tinted and clear lenses. I was doing 64 mph and hit a seagull, it hit my lowrance at the bow, and then hit my face. Not sure what damage would have been done to my face if I wasn't wearing the mask.
