If your looking to catch a football size Smallmouth March and April are great months to catch one that is full of eggs. Most important is the body of water you fish. Generally, the big clear water lakes have the bigger Smallmouth. Bait selection for me would be grubs and hairjigs. I caught one in March that the girth was about the same as the length. She was a Great big Toad.
Dale Hollow has seen a major turn around in the past decade. There was a lot of articles wrote back in the 90's about how Dale Hollow fishing was over rated due to the fact you couldn't catch any fish. Now, going out and catching 4lber a day is nothing. In the winter fish average 4lbs. The slot plays a major role into Smallmouth because you have to have the slot spawners producing the babies. Smallmouth are very sensitive during spawn too, more than Largemouth, so more spawning fish increases the overall lake production.
Guys,
I'm wanting to make some jigs for myself, not to sell, but to make one that the hook sticks better into the fish. I like using grubs, so I'm looking for a light wire hook that can be used into a 1/4 oz round ball. What would you all recommend?
The Float & Fly technique is very effective way to catch Smallmouth in clear water lakes. I use to live in Indianapolis and know the White River is shallow in some areas, but it is clear water, so I think the Float & Fly would work.
Guys, I've fished Old Hickory and never have caught any Smallmouth. Most of the time I will go up to Dale Hollow and fish for those Big Smallies. What kind of baits do you use to catch Smallmouth on Old Hickory?
