I've been Bass fishing for thirty years, and this past weekend, I broke down and bought a bait cast rod and reel, and some Bass fishing tackle. I live in the small city of Changnyeong, which is located between Masan, Daegu, and Pusan. There are several small ponds, reservoirs in the area. I walked to the nearest big reservoir and started fishing.
There were some weeds beside the shoreline so I threw a buzz bait by the weeds and brought it across the weeds. I made several casts, but no hits. I changed to a creature bait and threw across the weeds. As the bait neared the weeds, I got a bite, but the fish didn't run with the bait. I twitched the line a few times, and he hit again, but didn't take the bait. I reeled in and threw again. Another bite at the weed bed. I set the hook but no fish. I cast back to the weeds, but the fish was gone. No more bites. I fished down the shore line using the creature bait, but no fish. I walked down the bank and saw some people fishing Korean style, with long poles and bobbers. I passed them and kept fishing. I fished on down the bank to the bend. No fish.
The day should have been perfect for fishing. The temperature was rising, my guess was it was near 75 and a light wind was picking up. The Bass should be moving on the shore to feed. I tied the buzz bait back on, and I made several casts along the shore at the bend. Still no fish. I decided to walk back to the place where I started and try the weeds again. I walked by the people who were fishing, and I could see some fish in their basket. I couldn't see what kind of fish they had. I had seen some dead Bluegill in the water that someone had caught, about a week ago, and left in the water to rot. I passed the fishermen and walked a little further down the bank. I saw some weeds near the bank, and I cast the buzz bait by them. I brought the buzz bait through the weeds and almost back to shore when I saw a swirl under my buzz bait. I stopped retrieving and the Bass hit. It was 10". I made another cast to the outside of the weeds, another Bass, 8". I walked down the bank to another small group of weeds and cast the buzz bait, another Bass 6". In 15 minutes I had caught 6 Bass, not very big, but fish. They were my first Bass since Bass fishing in Korea. If this weekend is nice, I'll go back to that reservoir.
