  1. I've just started fishing beds this year. I take the easy approach to them. I slow slow slow roll the bait to the bed, and let it sit. Twitching very very lightly. It make take some time for them to bite, but eventuall they will get so ticked off they ****** it up and swim off violently, and that is when I set the hook. I throw black/red speckled craws and senkos wacky rigged. It has worked well for me
  2. My best sub$100 reel would be the 09 Revo STX-HS This is one unbelievable reel. Strong drag, very very good casting distance with any weight lure I throw.
  3. Here are some pics of the parts installed. On the premier, it came out a little bit darker, since the pieces where a dark gray. But the contrast is not too bad
  4. Ohhhhh these Revo (my cadillacs) were a breeze, now painting a Steez (a ferrari) I'm nervous about. But at least the metal pieces could be easily fixed. Let me know and we can tackle them and see how you like it. The good thing is that one can can do alot of small parts
  5. That will be the test. I have not used the reel since I've painted these parts. From what I hear, after a clearing the parts, it is pretty durable. Also if it does start to flake off, just put the parts in some carb cleaner/thinner let it soak for a while and you can redo it. I like tinkering around with things, so taking the cast control and drag star off is not that big of a deal. IslandBass The instructions are very very very simple. Remove the parts you want colored, make sure that they are grease/oil/dirt free. After they are cleaned, make sure they are dry. For the metal parts you want to paint, I used DupliColors Adhesion Promoter and DupliColors Metal Cast spray paint. Start with the adhesion promoter and use VERY VERY VERY light coats, 2 - 3 will get you in the right ball park (I learned from trial and error) Allow a couple of minutes between each coat to let it flash a little. After the adhesion promotor, chose the color of Metal Cast Spray you want, and again use very light coats to get the desired color you want. After that hit it with some clear and your good to go. On the drag star, I covered the threaded hole with some tape to ensure that I did not get any paint in the threads and for the cast control knob, I just made sure that I had it sitting to where no paint could get in the threads. This process is to me rated on a scale of difficulty 1 - 10.......as a 1.5......VERY VERY SIMPLE way to customize our reels
  6. I came across some info on another site and thought I'd try my hand at painting my drag star and cast control knob. The instructions were not too difficult to follow and the results to me came out not too shabby for my first shot at painting on metal surfaces. Here are a couple of pics of what I did
  7. I have three Revo series reels, and I can say the only thing I would do is upgrade the drag in the premier from the one of the STX. Other than that, a good clean to get all the assembly gunk out of there and get some better grease and oil.
  8. For the pond that I fish and the males are protecting the beds. I've thrown a Yum big show craw and a senko wacky rigged. I've sprayed some Yum garlic on the craw and drag it over to the bed and let it sit. I wait until they return and slowly twitch it. It might take a couple of minutes, but the male hits it so hard eventually. On the senko wacky rigged, same tactic, drag it to the bed, let it sit and just lightly twitch it. Same result. I guess what ever you feel comfortable with, do that and don't give up. I use amber lensed glasses which to me is better for where I'm fishing instead of my gray lenses
  9. One thing to consider with all the recommendations are these reels being compared equally? Rods, line, lures and reels that are equivalent to each other? Lets give a good comparison There is no way you can compare a Core51 to a Revo SX. Each of these brands of reels are EXCELLENT, it's all in what you want, and ultimately how much you want to spend. Either you can go with NIB or you can get a slightly used one and be just as happy if the reel was maintained properly.
  10. IMHO....the Revo series is an ABSOLUTE joy to fish with. For what I throw, it can handle all types/weights of tackle that I throw, and handles all species of fish quite well. From LMB to Buffalo that I've caught with them. I have an STX-HS and two Premiers
  11. Would you consider working on the reel yourself? If you are then there is a plethora of info on this site to help you through it. It basically takes you by the hand and gives you DETAILED instructions on tackeling the task. And, like the post above, what type of line do you have spooled? If it is braid, did you spool it over another type or is it completely full of braid?
  12. Wow I thought it would help if I used the same rod, reel and bait that he was using. I'd cut my hands off to have yours 8-)
  13. Would it have mattered if he had in his hand a limb from a willow tree, with a shoestring and a paperclip for a hook. I am more passionate about watching someone catch a big fish rather than what is in their hands or what lure is at the end of their line. Just me
  14. has the reel been taken apart? Maybe the springs have been put on wrong, or there are some washers missing. Check the springs and make sure they look like )( and not like ((
  15. I was at my local pond today, and the males are starting to make their beds. I was able to pull about 4 off of them, nothing of significant size, but in the next few days I'm sure I will be able to get some nice females. I am loving this sight fishing, this is new to me, and it's definitely an adrenaline rush pulling a black craw over their beds, and watching them inhale it.
  16. I ended up getting a 7'3" MH Mod Vendetta....I can't help it, but I love this line of AG. I moved my STX to the it and put the premier on the 7' MH F rod. I'm on the fence of picking up the BPS Carbonlite rod, or wait until the middle to end of the year to grab a Veritas. If there is something else that I see in the classifieds that I can't pass up, I will ****** that up
  17. What fish? All I see is an shiner and some guy standing on the bow of a boat 8-)
  18. Ehhh just reach down in there and grab the lure....a few scraps won't hurt much That is a nice size snakehead
  19. Thank God! I thought you were going to say you fish butt nekkid when you wear waders. I just threw up in my mouth
  20. Premier.....this is my favorite reel, and I have two of them. The STX is a nice reel, don't get me wrong, as I have one of those also. But I tend to grab my Premier alot more
  21. I did finally find out that this was a small mouth buffalo, when I made a trip to BPS and saw the species chart on the tank. This was my first experience with a Buffalo. I've only heard the name, but have never saw up in person, nor at the end of my line. It was a fun fight, and at least I didn't get skunked that day
  22. Every five minutes, then you will have to change out the senko....This should diminish your stock pretty quick
  23. I am no expert on buffalo nor carp, never seen one up close nor at the end of my line. It was a pretty fun fight for whatever species of bottom dweller it is
  24. Bank bashing this weekend, it was tough to get the bass to bite. So I walked back to a cove thinking I could pull something out of it. Well I did. I caught of a wiff of a smell I haven't smelled in years, and looked around, there was some catfish bait left behind by someone. So I figured what the heck, tie on a EWG #3 Gammy, and throw on some of the stanky stank and see what bites. So after soaking for about 5 minutes, I see the tip start to bounce. I reel in my other rod, set it down, pick up the other rod, set the hook, I feel WEIGHT....FISH ON!!!!! So this thing is pulling pretty good, strippin a little bit of line, I hear the drag squeal a little bit, I'm thinking this must be somethin pretty decent. We tug and pull for about 2 - 3 minutes maybe, then I get the first glimpse of its back That ain't no catfish!!! What is it?? A little more drag squeal, hold on now, you only have #12 test on this, don't horse it too much I want to get my hands on you, then I'll let you go. So then finally it lays over on its side, and I can get a good look. Well lookie here, mr good ole CARPY. I reach for my phone, snap a pic, run and grab my scale and she comes in at 11.13lbs. I should have taken measurements but I wanted to get it back in the water as fast as I could and let it go on to track along the bottom some more. I know the weight of it, but could anyone help me on measurements? Here are a couple pics I snapped before releasing it. Ooohhhh and this was caught on my bass rig a 6'3" M Vendetta/AB Premier. If anyone has any doubts about the AB Vendetta, YOU SHOULDN'T. The rod had enough backbone to handle this thing and not even break a sweat (take it, it was only 58-60 degrees out ) But I was kind of taken back that this rod handled the bottom sucker very well IMHO And this rod I mainly use for my shallow running cranks. I'm even more impressed with these rods now
  25. The big question here is......ARE YOU HAPPY WITH THE REEL? If so, forget what everyone else says. If the reel can provide the service that you are looking for, then thats all that matters. You can either speed up the retrieve with a slower gear ration or you can slow down the retrieve speed with a higher gear ratio reel. Get out on the water, get your lure/line wet and catch some fish And have a couple of your favorite beverages
